Learning the Muslim greeting

  • Muslims greet each other by saying salaam alaikum, with the response being walaikum as-salaam. This means "peace be upon you" and the response, "peace be upon you as well".
There are some slight variations in pronunciation depending on the speaker’s native language, and how the phrase is transliterated into different alphabet scripts. So keep that in mind if you see slightly different spellings in English, they are all referring to the same phrase in Arabic.

Is it ok for me being a non-Muslim for me to offer a Muslim the greeting?

Two problems: One, anyone regardless of faith can give this greeting, and they should also receive it back even if they are not Muslim. Two, there are Muslims in the comments saying that it is a sin to shorten the greeting. You seem to think that violating the rules of man goes against God, whereas I would think that God would be honored that people use this greeting regardless of how strictly it is used.
