  • Well, the Kickstarter fairy visited Bland Gaming yet again, much to my wife's dismay. Join your intrepid host Deeb as he tries to review Middle Earth role playing while trying to conceal said purchase from Mrs. Bland Gaming.

Just a liitle note i thing you miss understood the dice rolling. You rating doesn't add up in your roll. For your example with bilbo dice test. It 1d12+1d6=? You dont add your rating in the roll. The game would be to easy. But for the rest love your video and review on so many ttrpg

Thanks for the correction! It has been a couple weeks since reading the book. I also play so many Free League games the rules kinda all blend together in my head. I really know the Coriolis system the best, because we play it regularly right now. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@blandgaming6222 Would love to hear updates on your coriolis game! I'm trying to get our game going again. We're close to finishing the Ghazali and then going into the big plot line (which I hope works despite the risk of total railroading...).

I love the black & white drawings in the book. I must be the odd one out when it comes to Martin Grip's art, however. It just looks too undefined and blobby to me. Subjective, of course. It fit Symbaroum's setting okay. As far as color art goes, I liked it in 1st edition ToR more. *shrug*

The black and white is amazing! My only gripe is with the swords. Armor, helms, shield and clothes are beautiful but the swords could have used at least some knowledge of real historical sword types. But that's just my specific nerdiness 😅

Finished the video. I get the yearning for Rohan and I actually hope there will be expansions for that as well as the area around Mirkwood. Maybe even Gondor. I do love the attention given to Eriador which I find super interesting. What I would most like to see are more GM tools to help create playable content for sandbox style play.

Keep in mind that if you have the First Edition material, you can do some conversions to play in Wilderland, Rohan and within Erebor and the Dale-lands. That gives you a wider variety of monsters and adversaries as well.

One of the stretch goals from the Kickstarter is a PDF with the cultures available from 1st edition. Rohan was one of the cultures featured in the expansions for 1e so will likely be in that PDF. But that PDF hasn't been released yet.
That being said, last week one of my players wanted to be from Rohan. I used the stats from 1e and filtered them through the pattern of all the 2e cultures and gave him a rider of Rohan who had wandered north to Eriador much like Boromir had done in Fellowship.

    • @dbrugnani5286
      @dbrugnani5286 Před 2 lety +2

I think the PDF is just "Peoples of the Wilderland," which states: "We will prepare a PDF document presenting additional Heroic Cultures from the land of Rhovanion (Wilderland), to allow players to create Wood-elf, Beorning and Woodmen characters. This PDF stretch goal can be used to convert characters from the first edition of the game."

@@dbrugnani5286 Oh well. Hopefully Free League will put out Workshop templates eventually and we can get some decent quality homebrew conversions of the best of the 1e supplements.

Cool! There's a lot of room for further expansion. Though I love it that they focus on Eriador. I remember looking at the maps and wondering what's in the empty spaces.

What is Witch Hammer? Worth doing a little deep dive on? I love Symbaroum's aesthetic but haven't gotten a good enough feel of it to extrapolate beyond its current setting.

@@turgidsward Witch Hammer is the second installment of a 5 part Symbaroum RPG series called The Chronicles of the Throne of Thorns. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Symbaroum, aside from dark woods, but Deeb was super cool and offered up a copy to the community. I was lucky enough to receive it and fell 8n love with Symbaroum. You should check out his Symbaroum review. Like all his reviews it's very through and helpful for learning more.

Thanks for the review and good to see you're back at it! My box is on the way and I've been browsing the pdf's for a few days. The rules really take a bit of adjusting to even though they're on the end pretty straight forward I think. Target number 18 - attribute is recommended for one shots whereas it's usually 20 - attribute. You roll the d12 feat die plus the number of d6 indicated by your skill. Doing a bit of math in my head this makes me a little worried that the difference between a min-maxed 7 attribute and 3 skill ranks (max skill in the beginning) vs a decent 4 or even a good 5 attribute with 2 skill ranks is huge! If you have a poor attribute I wonder if it makes any sense putting any ranks in at all. I'm not a min-maxer/optimizer myself as a player and as a GM I prefer it that characters don't absolutely suk in the beginning. There are of course a few ways to manipulate your odds which is cool but using how points to get to a 50% of success is pretty steep misty is the time. If on the other hand you use the 18 - attribute rule and the characters advance a bit further, they'll have closer to zero chance if failure. In any case the system seems really cool and I love how it's thematic. Reading the book I realized how I've forgotten how much I love Middle-Earth. It's almost 30 years since I read all of Tolkien's work and I think it's time to read LotR again!

You don’t add the stat score as dice to the any test roll… also that’s not how Injury works either, you actually roll armour dice and have to beat the Injury stat, if you fail then take a wound.

Yes it seems I need some correcting. I play too many Free League games and they seem to all mix together. I am very right brained, so I'm afraid I don't explain rules terribly well. Thanks for the correction!

Really like the look & feel of this game but I utterly loathe the mechanics. Way too clunky. About 75% of the rules are unnecessary. So if we do play, we'll convert it to another system.

I am currently doing the same thing with Conan 2d20. After running a campaign for about 3 years, we stopped because my group just did not care for the system. We are currently in the works for resuming our campaign using the more streamlined rules of Forbidden Lands.
