they were an important part of history, they even had influence in music, remember many of those girls were dating rock and pop band’s singers, and also hollywood. They made fashion even more important than Hollywood by that time, they were featured in many movies, music videos, etc. It’s impossible not remembering that Pepsi ad with Cindy Crawford, or George Michaels Freedom 90s and not to think about Linda Evangelista, or seeing a Guess Jeans ad without remembering the first Guess Girl Claudia Schiffer. I think they were like pop icons, because of their influence on pop culture.

Many years ago, aft Madonna came out with the song, 'Vogue,' a reporter asked Linda Evangelista to "strike a pose!" She had a smirk on her face and replied : "we don't 'Vogue.' We are vogue." Perfect response because her special group of models ate, slept, breathed and therefore, oozed fashion. Brought it to a whole level of iconography. Decades later, people are still trying to emulate them.

John Edwards you cant quite Compare the supposed “supermodels” of today to these 90s Glamazons. They are made and Manufactured. These women were incorporations unto themselves in the 90s & changed the industry. There will never be a replica. These girls today look like they’re all constipated & pissed of, almost like they mistakenly trusted that fart & crapped their pants & they’re pissed off, scrambling to find the nearest bathroom with those frenzied walks of theirs. They are so skinny you can’t even really see the clothes, the fabrics, cuts, how they flow & drape, because they hang off their bodies. The walks are outright distracting & so put on. They look hollow with void personalities, No swag in their step or light in their eyes. Sure, they’re pretty enough for now but they aren’t timeless beauties or classic beauties we’ll remember for a lifetime. They’re like modern day Paris Hilton’s. Yeah, having grown up in that era everybody knew these models for sure. But this is also the era of extreme wealth and extreme poverty. And when it came out how much money these girls were making, a lot of the public was not so thrilled. And there was in some of the girls kind of a snarky haughtiness to them in interviews. So when I believe it was Linda Evangelista told reporter that she doesn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000, there was a severe public backlash. And her PR firm could never get over it. And a lot of the designers were thrilled by the fact that the downfall of the supermodel occurred because they wanted people to focus on the clothes, not the models. This was the greed is good era. And eventually the public got tired of it.

    • @adbc1f72

I feel like Linda Evangelista had a lot to do with helping contribute to the downfall of the models being known (therefore being able to get paid [the designers signed on to help to make sure that it’s kept that way {I don’t feel like Gianni Versace would’ve done that though}]).
As she is known for making that statement it helped to seal that anyone else coming behind her would have to practically kill themselves to make the kind of money that she made.

This is what the real modeling means. Like what Calvin Klein said models express the attitude of the clothes and in order for the models to do that they should have the most important things. Its the hard work, patience, and passion. Thats how models were way back in 80's and 90's. That's why I really adore them. And they were really natural, from head to toe. Im not against about plastic surgery, it's just for me modelling is not just a job you can get because youre beautiful or just because you have a sexy body. Its an art. I dunno maybe Im just really an old school person lol

Calvin Klein didn’t understand the value of a woman. It’s all about HIS clothes. Such a Narcissist. What is the use of a designer for whom the woman is not the point? A beautiful woman makes anything look good. No amount of expensive clothes will impress if the woman wearing them doesn’t have the personality to carry them.

The supermodel group of the 90's MADE those designer houses what they are today. People started being interested in fashion, watching runway shows and buying Vogue just to see THEM. They WERE the point of your runway shows Calvin, no one would be interested in your (lazy) designs if they weren't the ones modeling them. Imo they weren't paid ENOUGH.

Don't ever feed me the BS that models are supposed to be clothes hangers that disappear from view because that was NEVER the case. From Twiggy and Mary Quant to Cheryl Tiegs to Christie Brinkley to Iman. There are no commercially successful models from any era whose personalities and charisma were not capitalized on. The rise of the supermodel in the 1990s was an urepeatable event due in large part to the fact that there were a key group of them at the same time during a period when fashion, music, and culture were experiencing a renaissance. Timing and talent. These women were celebrities in their own right and yes, they absolutely earned every cent they were paid.

Boy was Lagerfeld wrong when he said "it's not a job they can do for 20 years". Lol. Many of these women still are and continue to be the most important faces in fashion. They were trailblazers at the peak of their careers, and put the entire fashion industry on the map in the 90s. They elevated the industry to stratospheres it hadn't enjoyed before, and brought glamour and excitement to a rather mundane and rigid industry that catapulted many of the designers at the time to mainstream exposure and dare I say celebrity status. In other words they gave then deaigners and fashion industry street cred.

And richer models were not Supermodels (Giselle, u listening?) nor does being the off spring of someone rich & famous make you one (Any Hadid/Jenner type belongs here). No. There were 12 and no more & no less. These models were picked by Anna Wintour herself to be in all white sportswear for Vogue’s Centennial cover in ‘92. If you weren’t on there? If it was the ranking was based on the order of who was the biggest, then Cindy, Christy, Linda, Naomi, Claudia and Tatijana would have filled the top 6 spot.
At one point Cindy, Christy, Linda, Naomi and Tatjana were known as the big 5 - this was during the George Michael Freedom video phase.
Tatjana got replaced by Claudia as a member of the big 5. Primarily because Tatijana kept a lower profile & was shifting her career towards acting and less runway.
