  • Horst Wessel Lied was the anthem of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and later served as co-national anthem of Nazi Germany. The lyrics and melody of the song are credited to Sturmführer Horst Wessel, the commander of the SA (Sturmabteilung). This song also has an english version called "Raise Up the Flag", which was used by an underground organization called "Silver Legion of America".

I watched and listened to this with very mixed emotions: as an historian I appreciate seeing a piece of histroy resurrected, but the seniments are so nauseating and repulsive and so much hatred, death and destruction occurred during the Nazi era that it is difficult to watch it. It is also scary to see the old Transvaal vierkleur associated with it. Come on! Oom Paul was no Nazi!!

I guess its because the National Socialists lost and the Communists won. Stalin and Mao may have killed more than Hitler but they were their own people, whereas Hitler killed foreigners. Foreigners don't like that! But I agree given, the similarities of many of the beliefs, there are double standards. Just come from listening to the Soviet National Anthem, like both bits of music.

The words are a musical extrapolation of the societal transformation to be wrought by the merging of national and social The idea too that fighting men effect this political metamorphosis through following signals to action and moving inspired by the example of their slain and past sacrificed fallen but unconquered in urban strife The movement ever advanced to the beat and potency of its cheap music but it was the succinct concentration of political panacea and nationally perceived resolve that guaranteed the anthem s appeal and still as expressive it was banned at least among German people.

This is a moving song. However, I am not here to respect or excuse Nazi Germany. I think it was one of the most evil states to ever exist. It was one of the most awful constructs ever created by humans-ands I am quite aware of the horrific things that occurred during the Mongol invasions, the Tai Peng rebellion etc. However, this song is a strong lesson for humanity we should not overlook. The power of propaganda is not just speech (or music). It can move rational humans to emotions that lead to acts of great evil. This song is powerful. It speaks of being oppressed and fighting back-not in its lyrics, but in the emotion of the music itself.
Germany was treated very unfairly after WW!. Even if the Kaiser’s government had been responsible for that war-which seems to me to be a historical lie-blaming the entire nation after the Kaiser and his government were gone was a horrible injustice. Does it forgive the Holocaust? Of course not! But it gave evil people a rational starting point to lead an entire nation into some horrible acts.
This song, and many aspects of Germany the 1930s and 40s, took advantage of propagandistic opportunities provided by bad decisions of the victors of WW1 to do some very evil things. How could a rational and strong people do the things that occurred in the 1940s? Hitler and his cronies took advantage of some truths to support a much greater lie. Blaming the German people for the decisions of the government of the Kaiser was a terrible injustice. Had Germany been treated after WWI as they were treated after WWII that second and most horrible war would never have occurred. The world, in its unfair and emotional response to a terrible war, gave an excuse to forces of a far greater evil, and resulted in a far more terrible war.
This is not an excuse, but an explanation.

Listening to the words you can see where Germany was marching, into a disaster and destruction ,give them bread yes,but by 1945 Germans were boiling turnip peelings, the much vaunted SA dead or hanged on the scaffold, the leader took a cowardly death, let's remember the three million German civilians killed by Allied bombing, the whirlwind of revenge was swift, sharp and deadly. To those who look back at past glory, remember the 42,000 Germans executed by the state because they questioned this dystopian, utopian world filled with bombast and hot air .When you look back remember what these people brought down on your head, 12 years in 1,000 year Reich in rubble in one generation, a generation that never grew old they died ...

The song "Die Fahne hoch" - Raise the Banner was never a German national anthem. It was the anthem of the Nazi Party until Adolf Hitler dealt with the SA, which became a political threat to him, after which the song was banned. By the way, the song was written by Horst Wesel a SA member , a gangster by profession and, according to some sources, a procurer of prostitutes who joined the Nazis and was killed in a conflict with communists on 14 January 1930, he was shot in the head by two members of the Communist Party of Germany

No, it was never the German national anthem, not even a second one, as you claim, but rather the anthem of the Nazi Party .The song was performed at party gatherings and rallies, but it was never the anthem of Germany@@Mackenzie002

And you could have added, in the description on your channel, a Nazi. A person who follows traditional Christian values because he does not want to think. A populist looking for instant solutions. Uneducated in terms of history, a person who yearns for a leader because he is unable to face the challenges of tolerance, democracy and personal freedom. A person who hates because it boosts their morale, who is not creative and has no real goal in life. A person who deals with other people (e.g. LGBTQ) because he has a petty spirit (while great people deal with positive ideas) and as is well known, it is always easier to hate and destroy and at the same time wrap himself in some ideology, Nazism, Christianity, Communism, than to be an original thinker. By the way, it should be said that all the mentioned ideologies are means for the manipulation and control of idiots. The Germans were fascinated by Hitler because they are a people of robots who love best when they don't have to think (I'm excluding German philosophers and artists here, who, like in every nation, are a smart minority) and when they are being ordered around. Most people don't know why they are in this world (the answer is really simple, but I won't tell you because you are one of those people who are not inclined to change their narrow ideological views), let alone have a coherent original idea in their heads. After all, a person who is fascinated by Horst Wessel or Nazism cannot be mentally sane. It's really funny when someone says he's anti-Semitic and refers to the Christian tradition and faith founded by a small, black-faced, curly-haired Jew, Jeshua of Nazareth, yes you heard right Jesus was not white, he didn't look like a top model, he didn't have blond hair and he didn't walk on water. I think that every normal person will understand how sick this idea is, which combines Christian traditions and right-wing ideology and anti-Semitism. If you had ever read the Bible you refer to and if you were a true Christian you would never be an anti-Semite and a right-winger. If you really knew something about the ideologies you embraced, you would realize that Christianity (which unfortunately is only used as an ideology with supernatural elements and has nothing to do with what Jesus really preached) is incompatible with Nazism. Finally, I will draw your attention to the fifth chapter of the Gospel according to Matthew, (5:3-12) which contains the only words that we can say with absolute certainty that Jesus of Nazareth spoke and which might help you to become a normal human being, because if you are not one of those mentioned in the text, you will lose your soul and go to Hell for eternity:
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
And at the end, many "warmest" greetings from an ex-theologian (who lost faith in humanity and God a long time ago because of people like you)@@Mackenzie002

Maybe not de jure, but de facto it was. It was sung at every major event in Nazi germany and even at family gatherings. In one of his speeches, Goebbels even speaks of „the national anthems“ - plural - in reference to the Deutschlandlied and the Horst Wessel-Lied.
