The Freelander having a dead battery means it is already fitting in with the rest of the fleet.
Having experienced similar wind speeds in the mountains on a few occasions (and having been blown off my feet more than once ) I know how scary it can be.
In 1986 there was a famous storm where they recorded a 173 mph gust on Cairngorms and climbers were blown upwards on ropes on Ben Nevis and yet amazingly all the climbers and hillwalkers caught out in various locations across the Highlands survived. I suspect more by luck in many cases.
That day I remember multiple cars with their windscreens and rear screens imploded in the car park at work, due ( I was told ) to pressure differences when there were big gusts of wind.
Living in the Scottish Borders near the coast we suffered storm Arwen, now I like a bit of bad weather but that was ridiculous and genuinely frightening even behind the walls of a 150 yr old home, so god knows what it was like up a lighthouse.
Interesting island history, thanks for the tour and information! Fun week with the family. What a storm, we had 11 beaufort.
Until a few days ago I hadn't even heard of Lundy. I hope to go there one day, it would be cool to experience Lundy in the Winter.
During that storm I was stranded on the Isles of Scilly. The planes were grounded on St Mary's and the Scillonian couldn't leave Penzance. I was gutted when the storm cleared. What a great excuse to stay there.
My wife and I took the Oldenburg over for a day trip in 2015. Gorgeous weather and the view from the Lighthouse was majestic. Even witnessed the RAF Seaking practice a rescue from the Oldenburg on the way over. Fantastic video mate👍👍
Hello Matt, The sealife is great off Lundy, I've been scuba diving off there following seals and a few shipwrecks. Idyllic location, the sea was like a millpond a few summers ago Nice to see the Freelander got your there and back ((!!!! ))
Well that was a holiday to remember...
Excellent, fantastic, brilliant, interesting video. Thanks.
What a time to be there! I bet the lighthouse was cosy and it stood up well to the storm! I'd love to go here, it looks awesome! Thanks for sharing, Matt!
LOL at mrs furious when crossing the river :D
Lol, you picked a good week to visit us. I admire your good spirits though.
Looks fresh 😀
You did well to avoid a broken window! Mine was the little Vauxhall on the other side of the heliport car park with its passenger window stoved in by Eunice.
oh no! I was worried about that as locals talked about stones being whipped up by storms
Very nice! Lovecraftian even!
superb. thanks for documenting
There is water inside the top of the lighthouse metal floor ... that is truly not a good sign. Water will corrode the metal floor and the place were the two chairs with the great view (on good weather) stand will be in trouble ... of course outside there was a storm so maybe that's the cause for water leakage inside the lighthouse ..
Only just watched this, but it's made me want to go and explore Lundy!
Wonderful to see the island again. And yes, I have enjoyed the view from the Marisco Tavern's gent's toilet many times - got to be the best view in the world from a gent's loo! I used to work on a boat that used to serve the island by standing in for the MS Oldenburg when she was out of service. We often took goods and supplies over. Unloading with the deck crane to the pier was always an interesting experience if any sea was running into the landing bay - with the boat rolling and rising with the sea. I got very good at that little mechanical dance in the end.
And for a few years, probably between 2004 and 2008 ish, we would spend 10 days per year over at Lundy with a team of marine biologists surveying the underwater life all around the island. Had some wonderful evening sitting on the aft deck whilst anchored in the landing bay enjoying a BBQ and a few drinks. We also always took a RHIB with us, so we also got plenty of time to just go for little explores along the coast. The scenery is stunning. Our surveys involved us doing a lap of the island each day on the boat, and we would often stop for luch up in Gannet's Bay, very sheltered and lovely to sit there and just watch the seals having some fun.
And of course many evenings were spent walking up that hill to the Marisco, time to relax with a pint or two of Old Lundy Light, with maybe a stroll across to the old lighthouse. Got to admit you chose a wonderful location to holiday! And nice to see the old deckchairs are still there - sat in them many a time. Yes, some great memories indeed of those years - even the time when we were standing in for the Oldenburg doing a supply run, and i ended up falling overboard from the back of the boat whilst tied up alongside the jetty in the middle of winter! That was a shock to the old system i can tell you. When I finally managed to drag myself back up one of the ladders on the side of the jetty both my skipper and the guy on the jetty were rolling around laughing their heads off! Even i had to see the funny side of it, mind you, it took a year or two for me to live that one down on the island i can tell you. Good times indeed.
I still live in North Devon, just a few miles from Ilfracombe, so i often see the Oldenburg (she used to be loving called the Old and Buggered), but have not been back since those days, a little thing called MS put a stop to all of that kind of fun for me. But great to see you over there enjoying some very embracing weather, Eunice was bad enough 3 miles inland, must have been quite the show out there. I must admit i would have loved to have been on the island to see it, I love a nice calm sea, but it's even better when it's blowing a real gale and the sea is going mad! Your footage from the lighthouse of the storm was fantastic to watch, what a place to experience it.
Did not realise you had this channel, have been subscribed to Furious Driving for a year or two now, but my ears pricked up when you mentioned Lundy in your latest Crown Vic episode, so just had to come over and have a look. Very glad I did.
Looks like an amazing place...
its kind of special and weird!
Subscribed to both of your channels today. Though it was cold today and windy it made it for a very clear day. You could clearly see Lundy Island from my home which I've visited and thoughly enjoyed. Keep up the great video's, much appreciated.
My type of holiday 😊. thanks for sharing
A really great video Matt, the adventure of a lifetime, when would you be in a lighthouse with 100mph winds again, a story to maybe tell the grandchildren one day.
Very interesting, Matt. Beaufort scale 12 is a hurricane. That tops out at 83 mph. What you are getting is a Class 2 Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. I had not realized that the Beaufort scale topped at Gale Force 12, or what followed. Wonderful what you learn on CZcams.
Glad you made it back to civilization! It is terrific that the Hippo proved itself so well. We did not get the diesel, just a rather anemic little gas engine that worked too hard for the meagre rewards. Have to say, the storm looked like fun!
When you turned up the road to Hartland I thought for a moment you were going to stay at the Hartland Quay Hotel, where I've been on holiday on several occasions...almost disappointing you didn't go there!
Once had lunch at that place. Homemade soup and a roll that came with a chunk of cheese so big I thought it was for the whole restaurant. Superb.
We've stayed there before! We went to Lundy about 6 years ago and stopped off there the night before, it was very good but it was booked up this time
Just seen this. We were supposed to fly over on the Friday but didn't actually get there until the Monday due to power outages at Hartland. Instead we went to farmer Kevin Welsh's funeral in South Devon. Looking at the damage when we arrived it was just as well that we were delayed.
It was an experience and a half being there during the storm. We were thinking about the people waiting to come over on the Friday and wondered what everyone did, if they could stay locally or had to give up and go home. The newer buildings took a battering but the old ones only lost a few tiles luckily
Brilliant. I love a lighthouse. What a great place to watch a storm from
Great video. Amazing lighthouse. Timing not so great but you’ll never forget that holiday.
River Torridge if you’re heading towards Bideford, Taw in Barnstaple
Great travelogue. Makes me want to visit the island, albeit in better weather!
Also, I had no time at all for Freelanders until you acquired one. Your objectivity with regard to owning and running one has made me warm to them.
Really enjoyed the video, brought back lots of happy memories for me as you drove past my late parents house on the way to Hartland Point. Stunning place to be even during a storm
A lovely video Matt. I live across the water at Croyde Bay can see Lundy from my House but not in that storm. I was surprised that there is wreckage from that German Bomber crash site. When I visited about 60 years ago as a little boy there was a lot of wreckage. I must go back again. Enjoy all your videos many thanks.
You certainly picked the time to go ! What an amazing place , I’ve seen Lundy but never been on it . Thanks for sharing your experience.
Reminds me of the holiday my family went on in 1974, up to the North Cape in Norway. There is an 300 meter high cliff on the island and a monument along with a visitors building. The day we went there it was the thickest fog and you could barely see 30 meters! I went there in midsummer 1986 with my fiance and it was much more spectacular as you where able to see a long way out to sea, ships looked like dingys out there. But it really is a "once visit place" not much else to do. You sure picked the "right moment" to visit the island, but it made for an interesting watch! Thank you! :)
That was and adventure time two! Beautiful place but the wind was relentless! 🌊💨
Thankyou for sharing amazing footage. Glad it didn't ruin your holiday.
Wow! What wonderful escapism, fabulous break thank you for sharing its nearly as nice as Cornwall 😆
Great video Matt. Having the LR fail at the end of the trip was a great Segway back into normal life.
Went on a trip there on the ship Balmoral in a huge storm. Things settled down during our visit. Pub was good. Very enjoyable day. Would recommend. Regards Paul.
Brilliant
love the reg!! LOL.
Superb Vlog…..as an island dweller…🇮🇲… visiting Lundy certainly appeals, 👍🇮🇲
An eventful holiday to say the least, very interesting thanks for sharing.
You were almost in my neck of the woods Matt, I can see Lundy on a clear day from where I live! Glad you all made it off the island unscathed - James (nitrosilvia) was very amused by your situation in his last video.
Side note, I used to live about 3 miles from Stonehenge. They've been talking about fixing the 2 into 1 carriageway traffic mess there for about 30 years at last count. Just going into Amesbury for a take away was a real chore during the summer months and it's probably even worse now that they've closed the slip road going past the entrance.
I’m starting to look at Freelands on eBay now myself🤩
That's a memorable holiday for sure, but what a lovely location to switch off, would not mind staying in a lighthouse
Super vid. What an incredible place to experience the elements!
Loved this, great place, awesome conditions, fab car, result!
Unusual Furious Weather video, but very nice.
Wonderful video, makes me want to buy a Freelander. I was LMAO when you said "Stonehenge is made of sheep". Know what you mean; we tried to actually get there once in the summer.... didn't happen because of the endless cues.
Even with the new tourist centre the traffic is awful down there, we were lucky it was quiet!
Thanks Matt, that was really interesting.
ooh yes , there is nothing better than a proper coastal storm ( when you're safely inside ) .. lol at furious junior ' are we there yet ' just as you set off for home '
he always does that!
8:44 welcome to Jurassic Park
Absolutely awesomtabulastic place to stay. Unfortunately yous were caught out by the biggest disadvantage of visiting most islands, no guarantee when you will return.
Stunning place which is now firmly on the itinerary. There should be a switch to disarm the Motion Sensors somewhere to avoid the alarm draining the battery in future.
Love Barnstaple, Bideford, Taunton and all around Devon and Somerset, need to get back there its been 19 years I think.
Thank you so so much for taking the Hippo. The MINI or the Mercedes would have been unproblematic but the video would not have been so interesting without the camaraderie and generosity of 4x4 Enthusiasts getting you going again.
Land Rover the best four X four X far.
alot of cars do but Im not sure the Freelander does, I will investigate it more before leaving it at the coast again!
Apparently its quite common to be stuck on Lundy, but normally only for one more day
@@furiousteabreak7892 my 2006 V70 motion sensor switch was on the centre console while my 2009 Audi A8 has it on driver's door under the latch mechanism.
its by the mirror on the C Class
Terrific video Matt, incredible weather!
That was a great video, really enjoyed it. Thanks Matt.
A suggestion to aid the radio reception in Hippo. My motorhome had appalling reception using a door mirror aerial. It was replaced with a Blaupunkt Autofun FunLine AM/FM windscreen aerial which is excellent. Easy to fit and needs a 12 volt supply. Recommended very highly. There are cheaper windscreen aerials but they are very poor.
PS I sent you a tip regarding paint touch ups to bodyintheboot. Did you see it?
What a great place. Would love to visit there one day, when I can escape NZ. Will add it to my list.
You really don't have much luck with batteries. Lol
Amazing video thanks can reccomend Harry dwyers CZcams of when he visits lundy in the summer in his rib goodwin
Ill have a look for that!
No need for sun block on this holiday :)
Wow, a great experience, Matt! If your marriage survived that, you're good for life 😂
not the holiday you expected, but these are times you remember the most.
Awesome!
you won't forget that 'holiday' in a hurry
Good videos, how much was the Helicopter transfer??
$7.40 per U.S. gallon at that pump.
That would be a holiday to remember. Magic. To have a holiday you need to be away from the Internet.
He has absolutely no idea !
Is this about the Isle of Lundy, or bloody cars ?
Has no idea about what? This isnt a car channel, check where your commenting
Been there
Im always surprised when anyone else has!
I bought a cheap DAB car radio off ebay, its great and far better than FM radios
I have a couple of those now, some are very good, some a bit annoying!
A bit like the Withnail & I vacation. :D
we've come to a storm by mistake!
You should have gone on the oldenberg 🤓👍 Ilfracombe 👍
it was in dry dock over winter, if we go again I want to
It's a pity the weather was awful because it looks like a superb place to stay. Maybe you should have taken the kite 🪁
we did, it lasted under a minute!
I bet it beat you to the mainland
A shame about the weather, now you know what it was like for Lighthouse Keepers in the past, Eddystone would have had the waves crashing over it. If the alarm on Hippo can be turned off I would do so if storms are forecast or take its fuse out. Lucky no neighbours to complain about it, also leave the handrake off when parked at the coast for a long time, leave in park or use scotches. (bricks for those who don't know the term). Lesson learnt when living in N. Devon, not close to the coast but close enough for the air and rain to be salty in Nor'westerly winds. You should definitely go back but in Summer when hopefully nice weather, if you can get a booking. Hope the Furious family had a pleasent time, a week away from the world sounds idyllic but hours/ days spent catching back up again.
Ive not found an alarm switch in it, Id have disconnected the battery but we and the locals were all taken a bit off guard by the size and power of the storms that week.
the extra days did mean a bit of extra catching up to do
@@furiousteabreak7892 Why are we still caught off guard by weather now with the power of thr modelling that the Met Office's computers have today, but it is nature and it can surprise us. Just lke it did to Michael Fish " Hurricane, no it won't be a Hurricane".
Hippo didn't like the weather
Illegal number plate on three counts, MOT failure!
The way that windscreen wipers come down, then go back up a bit and then stop, is a bit triggering.
drives me crazy too!
It must be a British holiday when you see an untethered sheep fly past the window.
Didn’t realise that you had another Channel. Triangle of Doom?. More like Doom Island. Windscreen wipers of any description would be utterly useless there.
Beautifully edited - and sadly it will be a family holiday you never forget.Personally, I can’t imagine anywhere worse to have to spend time. That is beyond primitive!
Have you seen the hassle the lady with FK02AYE reg Jag got from cops on 10 March for her "offensive reg"?
Can't drive the car till DVLA, who sold her the reg, issue new one!
Madness.😣
Must have been n
no, didnt see that - she must have kicked off and really annoyed the cops!
@@furiousteabreak7892 if you Google the reg it gives the details on front page
Lovely place to get away from the world for a week
Doesn’t a “triangle of doom” have to be a… …*triangle*?
I think its an open ended description
What a cool place to visit. Mini Furious must have loved the helicopter ride.
Looks fresh 😀
