Italy has been a destination for immigrants for many decades, with waves of immigration from different regions of the world. Today, Italy remains a popular destination for immigrants, although the political climate has become increasingly hostile to immigration in recent years. The country has experienced a significant influx of migrants from North Africa and the Middle East in the past decade, many of whom are seeking asylum.
However, Italy has struggled to cope with the large number of migrants and refugees arriving on its shores, leading to tensions with other European Union countries over burden-sharing and the treatment of migrants. The Italian government has implemented a series of measures to deter migration, including tightening border controls, increasing deportations, and restricting access to social services.
Despite these challenges, Italy remains a diverse and multicultural country, with immigrant communities contributing to the country's economy and society in a variety of ways.

It's not wrong. These are Albanians with Albanian passports. The other 300 000 Albanians have Italian citizenship, and they are not counted as Albanians. My brother and his family, my cousins, are all Italian citizens. They are not counted here as Albanian emigrants. The total number of Albanians in Italy is at around 800 000, so the quarter population of Albania lives in Italy.

@Nick Kerr Actually, the statistics of Albanians are so wrong. In Albanian registers, there are 4.5 million people and not 2.8 or 3 million, as they say. In the end of communism, in 1991 the exact population was 4 million with very strict statistics from communism who counted every single Albanian, but after the 90-s, a lot of Albanians have moved or had to give up their own citizenship when some countries didn't accept dual citizenship, like Germany for example. And, if you count Albanians of Kosova and other ex- Yugoslavian countries, their numbers are way higher as they have been abroad long decades before the Albanians of Albania proper....

A lot of them get citizenship by bloodline before coming to Italy so they aren't counted as immigrants but Italian citizens.

I want to come back to italy by next month. I was there for 15 yrs but in 2012 i had to come back to Mauritius and now finally I've taken the decision to move there again, but this time with a tourist visa. I would like to know if someone here can help please, as a Mauritian citizen with a tourist visa can i work in italy? And maybe then having my job contract and like that I'll be able to ask for my permesso di soggiorno. Is that possible? Thank you.
I'm not an Expert (at all) but if you find a job wile here you shold be able to convert or extend your permesso. (But better ask an embassy, italian burocracy it's a Nightmare)

The Chams by the way were a minority that first begged to stay ( an exception from Lausanne) in Greece and then in WW2 decided to collaborate with Fascists and Nazis. What happened to them is sad but they were mostly not killed as you suggest, and especially not more than Greeks that time and in that area. It was a war and they kept sides with the invader.

These are registered immigrants that have a regular residence. Many others are illegal and entered the country without permission. Moreover, a certain quantity of people are now Italian citizens and don't appear here. I know at least 2 families from Sénégal that are now Italian citizens.
