Clever Pigeon Loft Trap Door Design

This is the loft trap door I made to keep cats and unwanted predators out of our loft. It is simply counter weighted by blocks of timber on the inside and is just slightly heavier than a single bird.
Construction is 3/4'' ply with galvanized fixings and exterior paint stain. The inside has a plastic flap to prevent them flying back out however a normal wooden dowel system would also work.

I like to have an open loft so ,would this keep rats out of the loft as I have lost eggs , chicks and adult birds to rats.

Racing pigeon fanciers have been using that style of trap for over a 100 Year’s it works on a counter balance

Probably a completely stupid question, but if you buy Pigeons do you have to keep them locked up for a few days like chickens so they know where home is? do they just go flying during the day and always come back?

They need to be kept in for a week or two and you also need to make sure that they have not already flown, i.e youngsters. Otherwise they will just fly back home.

nice idea, but kestrels/sparrowhawks are the same weight as homing pigeons if not less, is this not an issue? quite a few videos on youtube of kestrels trying to go inside lofts

Greetings from Holland, can you advice me how to keep cats away from my pigeons, as we have lots of house/stray cats in Holland, I do want my pigeons to be free out side in loft, and they be free to come and go when they wish.
