  • Have you ever been in the situation where your bonnet release handle doesn’t work and thought “how else am I going to get this open”? Well it turns out that there is a way of working around this common fault. We investigate why the bonnet release cable has failed to open the bonnet on a 2015 VW Passat 2.0 TDI.
    We investigate why the cable has failed and how we logically went about the fault to release the bonnet WITHOUT damaging any components, especially body work.
    We’ll go into detail about how to replace the faulty component(s), why it failed and ways of preventing failure in the future and to ensure its longevity.

    This video is very helpful but location of the plastic cable junction on my 2015 VW Passat Wolfsburg (US market) is in an even more difficult to reach location. It's clipped into a channel at the top of the engine compartment. All you can see from the wheel well are the two light blue pins that protrude thru the channel. These are barely reachable but I was able to use the grip end of a long breaker bar to press these two pins back thru the holes. I could then grab the closer end of the cable to manhandle the cable junction out from behind this channel. At this point just by pulling hard on the junction itself I was able to trip the hood (a.k.a. "bonnet") safety latch. Wow, what a relief to hear that popping noise when the safety lockdown released! But what a unpleasant (!!) task to remove all those Torx screws holding the wheel well splash guards!

    A newly replaced release handle bracket failed cause the cable was badly frayed. Needed to replace it and this video helped me a lot. Thanks.

    Thanks so much for this! Had this same issue in my mk2 tiguan, pain in the bum getting to the coupling.mine had just popped out so no damage. Ended up using the back end of an old bass G string to put in the holder and pull.
    Life saver, cheers mate!

    The car I did had a peeled-off outer sheath and rusted the part of the cable and got stuck. Your video saved me a lot of time finding how to pull a new cable in. One tip, I have to put oil to lubricate the new cable, and hopefully, it will last longer. Had to put something to protect against the metal rubbing on the outer sheath.Thank you!

    Any extra advice is much appreciated! About to try this on a 2015 golf tdi. I broke it the first day I had it and I've not been able to pop the hood/bonnet since and I've been a little concerned about the battery because the TDI seems to need a little more juice to get started

    Good tutorial on the mechanism. Not a great design but at least I now know how to get to it and release the bonnet.

      Thanks for getting in touch and sorry for the late reply. Agreed, not a great design at all but engineers would probably say "we put that plastic bit there so you can still access it and open the bonnet".......just forgot to put it in an accessible location :)

    I have the same problem in my Passat B8 from 2016, namely, when it was frosty, I tried to open the hood using the handle, but there was resistance and only after one pull did the hood open, and when I closed it, the next time I tried, unfortunately, the handle was loose and when I dismantled it and tried to pull the cable with pliers, but the cable seemed to be jammed and wouldn't even budge. Unfortunately, I will have to go to a mechanic because the only way to open the hood is to get from the chassis, just like you did in the video... Greetings from Poland! :)

      Hi, thanks for getting in touch. Sadly these are really common issues with VAG vehicles. Especially as the latch aide of the bonnet. They tend to severely corrode over time and then become incredibly difficult to open due to the mechanism being seized. Regular cleaning/greasing of the latch is highly recommended. I presume the issue is resolved now? If so, make sure either yourself or your mechanic regularly maintains it, especially when it's in for a routine service or MOT. Hope that help and apologies for the late response.

    How on earth do you take the handle off? Got the same issue on my caddy but I've no idea how the release handle removes.

    How do you open the hood when the latch inside the 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan is broken??? The latch next to thre floorboard broke so how do you get the hood OPEN TO JUMPSTART THE SUV..... !?

    • @greenautoservices
      @greenautoservices  Před 12 dny

      Hi, apologies for the delayed response. This is also a common theme on VW's. Usually you can take the broken handle off, remove the inner plastic trim and take off the end of the cable. Once the cable is off, then just use a pair of pliers to grab it a pull. Should still pop the hood to access the battery and jump start. Hope you managed to get it resolved.

    Hi Adam
    Great video. Both myself and a friend of mine have experienced this breakage with the latch cable- however mine has now broken closely to the latch itself. Made worse by the fact that on a recent journey my oil level warning light came on!! So, desperately need to get bonnet up to top up as I use the car every day. Is there a last resort method of getting the bonnet up without afflicting too much damage??
    Chris

      Apologies for the late reply. There is a valid reason which will be apparent in future videos. Sorry to hear about your situation. That is a nightmare being broken to the latch. With a sharp eye & very long, and I mean long pick or screw driver, sometime you can get to the bottom of the latch itself from underneath and force it open but that can take a long time if not near impossible. Other than that, you may have to accept the fact that the grill will likely be damaged in the process of getting it open. Hopefully it doesn't come to that but I presume you may have already rectified the issue by now? Thanks for the update and positive feedback :)

    my cabel just broke on my b8 passat, unlucky for me the cable came loose from the hood lock when i pulled on it. do you think its possible to loosen the bolts for the hood lock if i smash the front grill ? or do you know about any other way to gain axes to the engine bay ? :)

    • @greenautoservices
      @greenautoservices  Před 22 dny

      Hi, thanks for getting in touch and apologies for the delay coming back to you. So this really is an unfortunate scenario. VW's in general are renowned for corroding at the hood latch and then breaking somewhere along the mechanism. If it was me, my first attempt would be the try and get mechanism unlatched from underneath the car. Remove the under tray and any other components as remember, the cable only pulls a sprung loaded hook. If you have a long enough screwdriver, some vehicle I've managed to unlatch from it's primary position from underneath. All else fails, then yes you may need damage something to gain access. If you've already resolved this though, please let me know how you did it. Thanks again
