    You missed the point of this movie. It isn't set in the future, it's a fantasy world. It's taking cues from Steampunk where you mix victorian era culture and technology with modern and even science fiction.
    It makes no sense traveling through space in a wooden ship, but that's because this universe is a fantasy, fantasies don't follow reality logically. Space in the movie is a metaphor. Today the frontier we are working on conquering is Space, back a few hundred years, it was the Sea. The movie mixes the natural curiosity of kids of space (there is nothing cooler than Space) and the classic adventure of treasure Island.
    Star Wars is another example, it has elements of science fiction, but then again, most of it doesn't make sense, it is more authenthic to real physics than Treasure planet, but it still is totally unrealistic, unlike say, Star Trek, which tries to stay realistic.

      This comment is great. A thing that a lot of people misses about Star Wars is that it isn science fiction, it is fantasy set in the space. Just as Treasure Planet, which to me is one of the best Disney movies of all time.

    Yeah... I never got Doug's hatred for the setting with this one. Especially when he said he liked the Steampunk in Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Having a mix of the future and the past makes the setting unique. It's like, what if this time period's aesthetics had continued into the future? Why have just another spaceship when you can have a space ship? I don't see it as distracting, but inventive and creative. Why does everything have to be set in stone? I mean, the mixing of fantasy and technology is something he praised in the Ghibli films. he's entitled to his opinion, but I really don't understand where it's coming from. It's like:
    Doug: I like films with unique ways of telling stories.
    Disney: Hey rather than give you just the past or future, we're going to mix the two in a unique way.
    Doug: That's dumb. Either be one or the other.

    • @tomato_dragon9585
      @tomato_dragon9585 Před 8 lety +59

      +Randygandalf95 I'm totally with you there! I was actually surprised that the aesthetics were as distracting to him as they were. It's understandable that not everything is going to add up when you mix these two different time periods (what technology exists that allows them to breathe on open-air ships in space?), but honestly, it's not a curiosity that ruins the movie. You don't need to explain every minute facet of your world to keep your audience entertained (if anything, that would make it less interesting), but you need to at least have a world that can get away with leaving certain things to the imagination. Treasure Planet, to me, has that world.
      I would be actually interested in seeing what makes the Studio Ghibli films so worth praising over Treasure Planet to Doug, though. I'm not saying that Treasure Planet is better than a Ghibli film, of course, but sometimes I wonder about his thought process as to why some films pull off this sort of time period fusion, and why some don't.

      @GideonGleeful95 Před 8 lety +69

      Zedek Yeah. One of the key ones is the explanation one.
      Doug: I hate films with too much explanation, just get to the point, why is there so much dialogue.
      Film: Explains a key piece of information in a short and pretty clear way that just requires a little bit of thought to put into place.
      Doug: This film's plot isn't explained very well.

    • @GikamesShadow
      @GikamesShadow Před 8 lety +6

      +Randygandalf95 This can be interpreted in many ways however
      While you say that the dialogue is important maybe already about 500 lines were spoken before ANYTHING happened at all. Even if its a key piece of information.
      Long dialogue sections work when the point in the movie is about something very important at that point in time. Lets say when the movie gets political with what is going on in that Fantasyworld. When they would talk for about 5 minutes everyone would understand it.
      But when there are monsters around and you see them talking about how to kill it, even if that is the big boss and it will destroy the world, 5 minutes of talking while being attacked by the thing just dont fit in.
      It depends on the situation at hand and overall I could agree with what Doug said about situations like that.

It's based off of old sci-fi where the concept of space as we understand it today, didn't exist. We didn't know how i worked so many writers and artists interpreted space as an ocean and the planets as bodies floating within.

    I actually LOVE this movie. I think it is horribly underrated. It never actually confused me because I felt it was well established that the movie universe was SO COMPLETELY different for the real world with just some little things from the real world sprinkled in. I think once that happens I don't need to justify anything to my sense of "real world" and I can just go for whatever physics and whatnot the movie is trying to convey exists in its universe... I don't know if that made any sense. I guess we can just go with "I think the steampunk-like feel was super fun! YAY" since apparently I can't gather my thoughts at 3am.
    I love that Tony Jay does the opening narration! I just all around enjoy Treasure Planet, it is another movie I will just stick on when I am working on a project and want to kinda watch something that I don't actually have to completely focus on.
    I guess I kinda understand how you feel though, I think it is basically how I feel about that Romeo and Juliet movie with DiCaprio, I never liked that movie being set in modern time but still using the original script, it always felt weird and forced. I just wanted them to stick to the original time period or just use the R&J story with updated terminology or w/o even using the original script, more like 10 Things I Hate About You, only a tragedy... Anyway, I just mean that I can understand what you meant even if I don't necessarily agree.

    Err, 66 years ago. _Walt Disney_ Presents *Treasure Island*. Directed by Byron Haskin, starring Bobby Driscoll, Robert Newton, and Basil Sydney.
    So why should they do it again? They wanted to do a futuristic pirate-punk movie. They got all the character stuff down right, the important stuff, so why does a creative setting throw you out? Just assume that it's a futuristic fantasy world, not a science based world.

      @michaelt.5672 Před 6 lety +7

      Arc Spark
      In a sense yes, in a sense no.
      It seems to be more like some sort of air that fills all of space.
      The word is clearly a reference to the now antiquated physical concept of the aether, which assumed that since light behaves like a wave, it needs a medium to travel through, just like sound. So the assumption was that there was some (presumably matterless) medium throughout the vacuum of space which transferred the lightwaves.
      The theory was disproven in the 1880s, and the relativety theory and quantum physics found explanations why light did not need such a medium.
      It seems that in setting up this universe, the writers went with the idea that there was such a medium that filled all of space.
      If it were a kind of breathable air, that would explain why the ships have open decks.
      Or you could indeed see it as some force field, although it seems that unlike the Force, this one is only usable via machines.

    I think your issues w/ this film are based in something you misconceived...the story isn't supposed to be taking place 'in the future'...it's a futuristic OTHER REALITY...thus the floating pirate ships, the talking creatures and so on...
    A shame you were unable to see it that way, as it makes the combination of the 'future tech' and the 'old world dress/aspects' make more 'sense', if only in that it's meant to be an 'alternate reality' based in two things being meshed...for the fun of it.
    Kind of 'steam punk' before that was actually a widely known thing.
    Maybe this helps you to see the whole concept differently, and like the movie as a whole a bit better?...;)
    Ironic side note:
    I knew the guy who wrote the original 'future version of Treasure Island' screenplay this was based on, and it was NOT intended as a kid's adaption/animated film...he wrote it much darker and grown up, tho several sequences and ideas from his original screenplay DID make it into this odd animated version)

    It might very well be set in the future, but it doesn't have to be Earth's future. I think that this film creates it's own universe where there is a space-faring civilization, yet the designs of the buildings, vehicles, and clothing are based on historic imagery. This has been done several times in film and literature and it makes for a very interesting setting. And it should not be something the film is negatively criticized for.

    You need to understand, it's not set in any 'period' of time, it's meant to capture the feeling of sailing the high seas, but the feeling of wonder that there really could be anything out there is brought back into the picture by setting it in something resembling space. Trying to limit your view of this world to "What period is this set in?" is a sure way to make yourself not enjoy it.
    Additionally, the reason that Jim is all rebellious is pretty clear. It's not just because they want him to look cool, it plays really well into his story arc. We see that Jim is very talented and intelligent, but the experience of losing his father has plunged him into a crushing state of melancholy.

    I personally love this movie even though I had actually never seen it until a few months ago but, I'm ridiculously glad I decided to watch it. The animation is utterly gorgeous. Everything flows naturally and the coloring is so majestic that takes your breath away. and while the steampunk style in this movie doesn't make a whole ton of sense, it gives you a unique experience beyond what you've seen. I'm glad they kept the odd futuristic, yet some how 19th century idea, thing. it give the story its type of originality without taking away from the source material. To me, Treasure Planet would not be Treasure Planet with out this interesting design choice. If they had put space ships, legitimate spaceships in place of the space boats, that would be boring as hell. We've seen space ships before, thats nothing new, but now we have sail boats that can travel through space? Thats not something you normally think about. In fact it makes think. Kind of a waste of time responding to a 4 year old video, but I'm just going to chime in for the sake of it.
    Stylistically, I dig it. Much like the Steam Punk genre or Fallouts retro futurism, it's a mash up of old time periods with advanced technology. It's not "THE FUTURE" or sci-fi, it's fantasy with futuristic motifs. I don't find it distracting in Fallout that I'm shooting Laser weapons inside a suit of power armor wearing a hair style Elvis would be proud of, 200 years into the future, next to sleek 50's style nuclear powered cars, old CRTs and manually tuned radios or computers that run like old IBMs.
    The age of exploration of the past meets the age of exploration of the future! I like it... actually, I kind of love it.
    My problem though is definitely how dated it feels. The 90's influence is strong in this one.

    Doug: "Just tell Treasure Island!"
    Me: "Why? so you can lambast it for being something 'you've seen and are sick and tired of'?
    This is one of those reviews where Doug honestly really annoys me.
    he's always raging about anything being even passingly familiar, but at times he's alarmingly close-minded to anything visually unique or anything with a unique take on an old story... I mean, fair enough, he explains that he just doesn't get into it, rather than just saying it's an outright bad thing about the movie but his review ends up with a very negative slant when he admits the movie gets all the real important stuff dead on... and it really does, the characters here are fantastic, the story is well told, and the presentation, even putting aside the stylistic stuff is absolutely incredible, with maybe the best 2D-3D animation blending you'll ever see and a fabulous score from James Newton Howard, maybe one of the best scores in a disney movie outside of Lion King and Hunchback.
    I dunno, maybe he'd be more positive about it now, after all, he got on board with ATLA and Legend of Korra, which had very interesting meshing of technology and fantasy (the former having giant drills, jetskis submarines and airships in what was otherwise a medieval technology level setting,) and the latter introducing giant mechs into a 1920s setting. so maybe he'd be over the stylistic curve now.
    also his complaints about the 'manipulative' side... sorry, just don't see it, the sky-surfing was supposed to be visual demonstration of his longing for a bit more freedom and opportunity and also a demonstration of his recklessness, carelessness and disregard for authority... both of which tie heavily into Jim's character arc... I think Doug let a little bit of baggage, (maybe his opinions from when the movie was being marketted before he'd seen it) get to him there.
