    Utah is in a good position to land a Major League Baseball expansion team, but weather and elevation could throw a curveball at plans for a team.
    Now retired, Park City resident Tommy Tanzer used to represent Major League Baseball players and managers as they negotiated contracts with teams.
    Tanzer praised the proposal to build a baseball stadium in the Fairpark neighborhood west of downtown Salt Lake City on the KPCW Locals New Hour Friday.
    “The place where the stadium is very smart,” Tanzer said. “The fairgrounds is a beautiful, big area. It’s underutilized. It’s halfway between downtown and the airport right on the tracks, it’s perfect.”
    Utah is aiming to attract the MLB, which has discussed adding two expansion teams. Major sports leagues are turning to the Beehive State amid strong population growth. Professional hockey will debut in Salt Lake City this fall after Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith acquired the Arizona Coyotes for $1.2 billion last month.
    The baseball stadium plan has financial support from the Utah Legislature and the Larry H. Miller Group, the former owner of the Utah Jazz.

    As someone who spends at least 1 summer week in SLC a year and as someone who attended the U of U, the power district is a great location for away fans/visitors wanting to fly in for baseball. Most western U.S city require a rental car or a lot of every expensive Uber rides when flying into a given city. The power district is a like a 12 minute light-rail train ride from SLC Airport. Historically that site area has been in a "rough for Salt Lake" part of town, so the stadium and buildout would revitalize the surrounding community. As hotels, bars, and the entertainment district gets built up next to the proposed MLB stadium, out-of-towners can fly in, stay, and see baseball for what looks like a fast and assumably affordable option. It's funny that retail car tax increase pays for a stadium yet many travelers wont be required to rent a car when attending baseball in SLC. NHL fans visiting have a ~25 min train ride when staying near Delta Center/city center.

    I think the most likely scenarios for Utah getting an MLB team would be through expansion (with another team in the East like Nashville, Orlando, or Montreal, bringing the total number of teams to 32), relocating the Tampa Bay Rays, or relocating the A's to Salt Lake instead of Las Vegas if that whole situation doesn't work out.

    From what I get is that an expansion team is the prefered but nobody knows when that happens. Question is if they get a team to move here who will own the franchise and does the team that comes want to sell? The MLB group is obviously well planned out beyond just exploring to have or not have an MLB team but ready for either expansion or a move and once decided on the design of the stadium shovels are ready to go. Even moving the Bee's out of Salt Lake city south but keeping it in the valley as their triple A team, with a new minor league stadium is serious business. Millers already own the Salt Lake AAA Bee's. Wonder what happens to Smith field where they play now? Smith field is a very nice ballpark with somewhere of 10 to 14k capacity. Funding, land and with the Miller group experience in major league ownership. It is possible that they are even closer or further along to having a franchise than anyone knows or realizes.

That isn't even mentioning Tooele to the west which is a straight shot to downtown and Utah co. to the south of a 500k+, which is about an hour drive from say the Provo-Orem area to Salt Lake city. I live in the Salt Lake valley in Draper. If I left to go to a game downtown Salt Lake and a person in say north of the SL metro did the same, we both leave at the same time and drive the same speed, they would get there probably 15-20 minutes before I would. While admittedly the Coyotes situation was well played, and the NHL deftly made a hectic, but relatively smooth transfer to the SEG, MLB is a clown car enterprise that has repeatedly demonstrated that it can't do anything of the sort. While I would be all for any scheme that extracts John Fisher from the A's, the overall predicament of Baseball is so dire that Utah may have bought itself an invitation to a party that is already winding down. The A's are merely the one team in full conflagration, but there are no fewer than six other teams where the figurative dumpsters are smoldering, and a half a dozen others that are match ready. Two years from now the entire American League may look like Devil's Night in Detroit (ironic how the Tigers are one of the safer teams). The gist of which Utah may find itself as one of three or four mid-market teams that remain, and which under Baseball's income distribution rules, don't stand a chance at being competitiive...

      The NFL is unlikely to ever come to Salt Lake City mainly because of how popular the college game is. Both the Utah Utes & BYU have massive followings in the state & they would be quite upset if the NFL decided to come in & take away fans especially Utah since they play in Salt Lake City at Rice Eccles Stadium. Speaking of Rice Eccles Stadium, it only seats 51,000 which is way below the NFL minimum of 60,000 & I am sure the Utes would not want to pay for an expansion to the stadium just for an NFL team to play there for a few years while their new stadium is being built. There is also no ownership group that is interested in bringing a team to the area. Because of these factors, the NFL (should it decide to expand) will likely look at larger cities like London or Toronto instead of Salt Lake City.

      The WNBA Utah Stars relocated to San Antonio to become the Silver Stars, then got sold & relocated to become the Las Vegas Aces. So the original Utah Stars WNBA franchise still exists in Las Vegas.

    I wonder how many car rentals they actually get in Utah. Yeah I guess anyone out of state on business or ski trips in the greater Salt Lake City metro area is the main source. But how many is that really?
    As for people going to the national parks all in the southern part of the state, most of them fly into Vegas, rent a car here and then drive to Zion or Bryce Canyon etc.

      SLC / Northern Utah has a VERY robust tourism market with several world class mountain resorts within about an hour of SLC airport. More than half of Utah's visitors come to the Salt Lake Metro, including Salt Lake, Park City, and Utah County. Tourism directly contributes about $12 Billion per year in Utah, and drives about $2 billion in total resulting tax revenue per year.

      Coyotes were anything but poached, team was playing in a college arena that was inadequate. Millions and millions of losses over 25 years in the desert. It was long overdue to relocate that team.

      Honestly as a coyotes fan I don’t think the Ryan Smith poached the Coyotes. It was incompetent leadership by AM and better arena situation being available in Utah. I believe they wanted an expansion team anyways

    • @Toastbastard
      @Toastbastard Před 14 dny

      This wasn't a poaching situation. Smith was asked to participate by Bettman and the process was transparent. If you want an example of a poaching situation, try the Seattle Sonics relocation to OKC.
