  • Johannesburg is a city of contrasts. At once welcoming yet still hostile, it is a special beast that offers some up fascinating opportunities for street photography. During my week-long stay in Joburg, I took a street photography walk around the Maboneng Precinct; a somewhat gentrified district in the city centre packed with street art, sidewalk cafes and foot traffic. In this video I focus mainly on the street art which gives the Precinct its distinct character. Shot on DJI Osmo Action and with the Sony 20mm f2.8 pancake, enjoy this slice of Johannesburg, South Africa, through a street photography lens.

    Just discovered this video and really enjoyed it. I’m going to be in Joburg next month and will definitely be heading to Maboneng for some street photography. Curious, what where you using to shoot your video?

      Thank you boss, I hope you enjoy your trip. Maboneng is such a dope area. I used an Osmo Action to shoot this, D-Cinelike settings at 4k 60fps.

    Dear Stuart. Thanks for the video.
    I intend to use this lens for the street during daytime. However, the days are not as bright here in the UK. Does this lens have good sharpness from say F4? How is the centre sharpness at f2.8? I am using the Sigma 30 f2.8 during daytime and the Sigma 30 f1.4 at other times. The f2.8 Sigma does not make full use of the A6400's AF capability.
    I use anything between F4 to F8. However, in winter here in UK, the ISO goes upto 3200 even during daytime at 160 shutter speeds. I am having to do it as the DOF on the Sigma 30 is not deep enough.
    Thanks
    Sorry for the long comment

      Hi and so sorry for the late reply! To be honest the sharpness is great even at f2.8, but if you already have Sigma 30mm f1.4 then why would you want this lens?

    Great video. Can you share how is the autofocus performance of the lens in video? I have been wanting to buy this one for some time.

      Hey Chirag, sorry for the late reply!
      I can say that the autofocus is decent -it's not super quick but being a native lens, you generally won't miss focus with this lens. It's better if you stop it down to f6.3/f7.1 because then you increase your depth of field!

    Hi Stuart, may I ask what mode do you prefer when shooting on "no in body stabilization + no OSS len" set-up for Street Photography because when I use a6400+SEL20F28 in P mode to take street photo, I just feel that the shutter speed always not fast enough for me to catch the moment...

    • @StuartHendricks
      @StuartHendricks  Před 4 lety +4

      Hey, I must apologize for responding to your comment so late as I don't always get a chance to reply to all comments :(
      To answer your question, i find that aperture priority with a minimum shutter speed above 1/250th generally works out okay for street photography, although you may have to hike your ISO up to about 1600 if you're in a dark environment. Although to be honest, I mostly use my SEL20F28 during daytime and shoot with the Sigma DC DN lenses at night because they're just a bit faster :)

      No OSS I'm afraid, but then again it is a very small and cheap lens :)
