I used to wonder why comic book guy didn’t just sell it in his store. Then I realized he’d probably find it beneath him to sell the belt out of its original packaging.
Yeah even as a kid I noticed there was a trend of Simpsons' episodes where the first 5-ish minutes would have absolutely nothing to do with the episode's eventual premise.
I had a friend in high school who was missing a belt for a week and was inspired by this episode to wear an extension cord instead. The funny thing was nobody ever noticed until he showed me on Friday.
I've always felt that Homer's personality in the first few minutes in the mall were somewhat of a foreshadowing of the infamously hated "jerkass Homer" introduced in the following season. Just look at the way he doesn't care he's hurting Marge, and the odd reason for wanting that ugly jacket.
It’s called flanderization. Over time as writers ran out of ideas some simpsons characters personality slowly turned in to their wacky characteristics. Ex: Flanders went from a do gooder family man in the early seasons who was also religious to being a complete religious nut in the new seasons. Homer went from being a relatable determined father and husband who could be dumb and act like a jerk but you could tell really cared for his family, to being a complete retard who treats his family like dogshit.
@@Gojiro7 And the rest of the show followed suite. It went from well written stories full of heart and humor (filled with subtle homages to other works), to blatantly trying to cram in as many pop culture references in your face as possible for cheap laughs.
nah the unfortunate end result of storyline exhaustion: the characters gravitate to their extreme features so as to compensate for the paucity of novel plots and interactions, yielding hollow, stale, and artificial constructions. The extremities of this form of jumping the shark are seen in unusual concentration in the Simpsons due to the show’s longevity- most others get canned long before they roll out 15 extra seasons of tripe.

The fact that the belt did so poorly to aid Bart against the bullies, should have been a sign to them that the belt wasn’t worth taking from Bart. But by then they simply beat him up and robbed him for the sake of assault and robbery. Hell, he could have just GIVEN it up willingly and ask “so who gets this?” and let the three of them fight over it.
Anthony Ramsey actually I’ve met several a overweight black guy named Reggie was one of them, he lived with his sister and would always be at the library or on the bus, he would also always be asking for money but he gets a disability check. And he carried around a backpack full of books and comics, he was great for conversation but his always asking for money gave a bum impression of him.
Bart's kind of a tragic character. Poor guy gets bullied all the time, his best friend is a sycophantic nerd in love with his sister, and he acts like a hoodlum just to get attention from his family.
The way Homer treats Marge at the start is how merchandisers treat potential customers - not listening to you and literally strong-arming you into things!

ah yes, assault is funny, because he's just a kid getting beaten up by other kids... perfectly legal and fine /sarcasm This isn't funny, it's just sad.
...as one who grew up watching this show, I call bullshit on the animation. When bart runs from the bullies he is on the right side hiding behind a bend in the wall, while the bullies are on the left side. When they hear the 'help' call, they are in front of bart. How is that possible?

Thankfully no one ragged on his cord.

If only GBG had some sort of way to sell the belt for a profit. Maybe in some sort of store...
