I think Ian travels from vocalist to vocalist and occasionally inhabits their soul for the particular performance of a particular song. This is one of those performances.
I went to this show after buying the cassette from Tower Records because I thought the name of the band sounded cool. I was blown away, and yes I was also a Spacemen 3 fan and had their cassette too! Lot's of great indie bands played at Club Lingerie back in those days. My best friend's brother was a bartender there, and we use to get in free and get drunk as skunks. Great times growing up back then, so much subculture and experimental music going on.
i just discovered this band and "dreampop" yesterday. for a long time I have been so sick of classic rock, hard rock, prog rock.... everything I used to listen to. This stuff is a breath of fresh air to me. this is one of the best songs ive ever heard
When a song is this 'cryingly good' ...it matters not who might have done it better or first. There are lucky lucky people who will for the first time, learn of great great bands like Joy Division, New Order, Galaxie 500, Radiohead, et al. as a result of this video/post/discussion. Ian could have asked for no greater homage i would think. Top 5 tracks i ever heard.
I think Dylan said something about 'Watchtower' becoming Jimi's song after he covered it. I wonder if Ian would've felt the same way after hearing this interpretation. Seems to get at the emotional core in a really profound way -- to me, anyway.
@@michaelchevalier9777 new orders early, brave versions are so great...its their song and this version is its equal. Too bad Galaxie500 was so short lived...none of its spawn could match them

Oh how I wish I knew Galaxie 500 back then and to have seen them perform this live... I can't help but well up when I hear this song, spectacular cover.
What a truly magnificent rendition of such a beautiful song by the greatest band in the world Joy Division. The guitar work and the rhythm of which it is performed I can do see Curtis up there singing this. Incredible!!
This live cover is better than their studio cover and that is better than the Joy Division / New Order original. It's as if Curtis left something slightly unfinished about the song that these guys brought to completion. Transcendent and full of pathos.
Quelle claque !!
Ditto. Most remakes suck. This wasn't one of them. And this song is a very hard one to pull of that feat. It's a signature New Order song all the way. But G500 pulled it off.
@@jlbrpt well then you haven't heard many covers then. What about Johnny Cash covering Hurt, Nick Cave covering Hey Joe, The Stranglers covering Walk On By, John Cale covering Heartbreak Hotel, The Residents covering It's A Man's World, Nirvana covering Where Did You Sleep Last Night etc? There are so many out there who have taken a song and made it 'their own'. I've got a playlist with alternative bands covering songs, and have added this cover to it: czcams.com/play/PLNINWcxxj9hHhXhw5IaBHnwXtEx02zNRU.html
Radio head do a really great rendition of it, too. Plus, The Headmaster Ritual. A Smiths song, from Meat Is Murder, for those who do not know. Still think New Order's version is the best. It is difficult to improve on greatness! One of my all time favourite songs. That and Temptation. 😉
one of my favourite bands of all time - apart from Damon who knew what he was doing on drums, the other two were new to their instruments but learned real fast. Inspirational
I'm 16 years old (90's kid) and only listen to cool bands like guns and roses, nirvana, and galxie 500. I wish my friends who listen to nicky minaj and lil wayne were like me
Je les ai vu en Bretagne il y a 30 ans pratiquement, cela reste à mes yeux, comme un de mes concerts préférés et pourtant j'en ai vu des centaines et des centaines de concerts.
Is it this show in full I have on a VHS tape in a white case? None of the editing multiple cameras but the high-angle looks familiar. And Dean's shirt.
I think for a brief period, 89-90 these guys might have been the coolest band in the world.
Agreed! And then "grudge" came and ruined everything.
I've been listening to music for decades. This is, in my opinion, the best version of the best song ever written.
I think Ian travels from vocalist to vocalist and occasionally inhabits their soul for the particular performance of a particular song. This is one of those performances.
Is there a word to describe the bad feeling of not being able to see a band live ever?
Regret. I’m feeling it right now. 😢

This is quintessential, definitive dreampop at its best. It creates what ancient Hindu aesthetics call Rasa Ananda which roughly means 'Mood Bliss'.
I consider this mind indulgence music. I put on headphones, and my mind just floats.
Spacemen 3 shirt very cool
I was at this show, standing right in front slightly to Naomi's side! The back of my head is somewhere in the shot starting at 4:57. :D
I THOUGHT it was Michael Kamensky.
Oh, how I wish time travel was a possibility.
Same. I'm maybe 16 years younger than Dean now so it's legal. In 1990 I was 12 think. Him and Graham Coxon were my crushes.

Nobody plays Ceremony better than JD/New Order.Galaxie 500"Hold my drink"!
HAHAHAHAHA! yes
They have done it in a different fashion with obscured vocals and distorted sounds.
It's a totally different song the way they do it, and I like it.

Magnifique, sublime...
You rarely see them with two guitarists. I love it, sounds so much more full like the albums. They shoulda kept touring with two guitarists

My new favorite Galaxie song ... is that Kramer on the guitar in the shadows? ... those fucking harmonics during the lead!

is that Kramer lurking on 2nd guitar?
Yup
Would love to hear this version with and without Kramer. Is he superfluous on stage, or does he make this the transcendental track it is?
he's just playing rhythm guitar so it's more akin to the studio version.
