I Got An AMAZING Average... And There's No Video

  • After months and months of practice, I finally PRed at 3x3 one handed! I got an 11.63 official average, which places me at 63rd in the world. There's one problem... I didn't record my average. This video goes over why I don't record my official solves anymore, and what would hvae to change for me to start doing that again.
    As for Max Park's 6.44 OH misscramble that I used as an example, I'm not sure whether or not that applies because I don't know whether or not the video was used in order to determine if this solve was a misscramble. That could have also been found right after the round if someone asked Max to verify his solution. In addition, I am not arguing across the board that misscrambles should count. Max's 6.44 was a very special case, where his scramble was only 1 move off and made his solution 1 move LONGER than it otherwise would have been.

    I remember seeing one of Jay's videos on this a while back with a very similar message, I think it was about the 3.47 solve because it wasn't filmed. Totally agree with every point you make in this video!
    edit: ah yeah you mentioned Jay at the end!

    I can definelty relate to the stress that comes from recording solves, It's definitely I huge distraction and it may or may not have hurt my times in the past, I'm not really sure how recording has effected my times. I may try not filming in the future and just focusing on speed.

    In july of 2021, i got my first NR, a pyraminx average of 2.88. After the last solve, though, while clapping and celebrating, i accidentally touched the cube, and i almost got the solve +2'd, and with the +2 the average wouldn't have been an NR anymore by 0.02. Thanks to the delegates at the comp, who found a way to use another regulation to not +2 my solve, i still got the NR, but it would have been heartbreaking for me to fail an NR like that.
    I agree with your points, and at my next comps i will follow your advice. Great video as always and GG for the PR

      another example, this time more devastating for the cuber: a friend of mine, 2 months later, got a 2.99 NR2 pyra average, but the 1st solve got DNF'd 4 months later for the silliest reason: he started the timer and then immediately stopped it after, without touching the cube, and that apparently makes the solve a DNF. The average became a 3.46 and even now he hasn't gotten a sub 3 again, with his PR being 3.18.

    At my first official competition back post COVID, I got DNFed in my 2 main events: 2x2 and 3x3 because I left the front display of my GoPro on. I gained absolutely ZERO advantage from it but still got penalised. That’s the WCA I guess :>

    • @BrodytheCuber

    I'm going to a comp this weekend and I won't be filming my solves myself. Some WCA rules are dumb.

  • @maxxiong
    @maxxiong Před 2 lety

    I usually record everything actually. The only time I've actually checked scrambles during comp are for dumb singles and my 5x5 48.22 (since it was NR and also delegate didn't even consider checking it). My main events are 6 and 7 so scrambles aren't an issue there.
    I haven't actually had any incidents against be on video yet and I have actually resolved a few by video. Also funnily enough the only average I didn't record was clocked where I DNFed by solving to 6 then a technical DNF for clock falling over while starting timer (yes it's still a DNF if clock doesn't hit table until after because not in standing position).
    It should also be kept in mind that manufacturers have generally required video of the solves for CR/WR prize money after the 3.47.

    This is random but I tried holding the cube lower on my 4x4 solves, beneath the table, and it helped my lookahead. I’ve seen feliks talk about this before on big cubes. Have you tried this before?

    I feel like at least portions of the video issues could be sorted out by wording the regulations better. For example wording it to say that a competitor must not *intentionally* make a turn and that any incidental turns must be rectified immediately by the competitor. Of course the intention bit is hard to determine, but arguably any competent judge would catch an intentional act in real time and any incidental turns would either not be noticed by the judge or they would be able to easily shrug it off.

    I'm a little confused about the second part of the video. I completely understand not wanting to record because of the hassle, but why not record official solves for your own benefit, and if they have a accidental penalty, don't post it? The only reason I can really think of besides what is mentioned in the first half of the video is if the judge notices and requests to see the video.
