    The $8k spend May be a bit for some, but spread out over 6 months could be doable. I waited to apply until I had some big purchases: 6 month car insurance for the family, new tires/car maintenance, laptop and monitor, vet visits for pets: shots, groomed,teeth cleaned(i know), made advanced payments on my utility bill, new glasses & contacts(reimbursed by health insurance). I hit the $8K spend in 2 months. Didnt want any manufactured spending to raise a red flag. I set aside the money to pay it off by the due date though, no balance.

    The Walmart membership is the sleeper benefit for me. Allows me to use the Sam Club gas station that saves me several bucks a tank each time vs the station next to my house. It allows me to use my 10x gas card on top of it, which doesnt work at Costco because it is a mastercard, which gets me another $3-4 each time.

    I plan to apply for the Platinum later this year. I know that I could use the $200 airline fee credit, $200 Uber eats credit, $240 Digital entertainment credit and maybe the Saks $100 credit. So I am close if I can use those. Not to mention the Priority Pass and Centurion Lounge access.

    Charles Schwab will pay the whole $695 AF on the Platinum and also the $250 AF on the Amex Gold. The catch: You have to have at least $10 million invested with them.

    • @Thesinistereyes1

      @FlintIronstag23 Před 6 měsíci

      @@Thesinistereyes1 It is a nice gesture considering JPMorgan Chase won't do that with their JPMorgan Reserve card. You are expected to have at least $10 Million invested in their private bank before you get an invite for that card and then they make you pay a $595 annual fee. The AF should be waived for clients with that much money invested with them.

    Retention offers help reduce the annual fee. I got a retention offer during each of the last 3 years. They were 20K MR for $3K spend in 3 months, a $150 statement credit with no spend requirement, and 20K MR with no spend requirement (newest to oldest).

  • @Ljberkow
    @Ljberkow Před 5 měsíci

    You have to value the return based on what you'd get from another card with other spending. Once they drastically changed the fee for authorized users, I lost a lot of value on the card. The benefit I miss the most is the International Airline Program. I might get the card again before booking my next international flight. Savings on a premium economy round trip for two to Europe would offset the total fee. I would do that and not renew my Hilton Aspire, which I earned 180K in SUB for this year. That's not a keeper card, and like the Platinum, has crappy points multipliers. The Amex Hilton Surpass, on the other hand is a great card.

    One fairly important change this year (effective Jan 1 2024) that could be important for some - Delta Sky Clubs stopped permitting folks flying on Basic Economy tickets to enter with the Amex Plat. This destroys a lot of value for me since I frequently take the LGA-BOS shuttle.

    • @gsctrading7215
      @gsctrading7215 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Agree, and they did the same with the Delta Skymiles Reserve card. That's a big setback for anyone taking the Delta Shuttle out of NYC to Boston, Washington DC or other cities. Also, even if one does not fly Basic Economy most of the time, just the concept that they are taking away that option while you're still paying that high annual fee is a big ding on both the Platinum and the Delta Reserve cards from my perspective. Notably, neither American Airlines nor United have stopped offering this option on their premium cards, which should make Delta look even worse.

    Amex Plat's benefits have been gutted completely. The ONLY reason it was useful was for the Delta lounge access (or having access to the AMEX ones w/ guests). The rest of the perks were kind of just there to justify spending so much per year just to get lounge access. But now, they destroyed the main benefit and the rest just do not justify spending so much on the card.
