USS Salem is a heavy cruiser, one of the last artillery cruisers built in the USA, the Sea Witch of the US Navy, and âŠa giant that was late for the war. Nevertheless, her technical characteristics exceeded her time, as she was designed as a ânightmareâ for the Japanese Imperial Navy. In this episode of Naval Legends, we will explore one of the most advanced cruisers of its time. Welcome aboard the USS Salem!
Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

even though they are outdated in today's sense, they are still impressive ships to see.
+ISAFMobius18 Looks way more badass than any ship today, with all those guns.
Old not outdated
Edit not
I agree, most ww2 era ships are amazing
I think even our next generation families will still be impressed into these older warships despite the new more powerful missile ships.
Facts nigga
OMG! The Salem is the first naval ship I was on board... as a field trip tho.The ship introduced me to the navy and... Well... I started playing this game.
3:14 "huh"
had the honor to worke on this ship as part of quincy high school intern program back in 1998.
The swansong to the era of the gun-only cruisers. The Des Moines certainly are the epitome of their classes and are good looking boats in my eyes.
I wish USS Salem gets some tending to however; those 3"/50 turrets look rather terrible from rust today.
Its one of the few ships thats volunteer only and doesn't get help from the state for upkeep
There is a frustrating amount of rust on that ship
buk1237 welcome to a ship that sits outside in the new England winter
buk1237 The museum was closed to the public for 18 months due to political issues with the pier (owned by a state agency). They are looking to move to either East Boston or Southie.
They can really use visitors and whatever you can donate.
My Cub Scout Pack slept over on the Salem about a month ago. It is an amazing ship in person, but definately needs some TLC.
Dave Reed Good to know, not likely to visit the US anytime soon but certainly interest in visiting her
buk1237 it's ok for now the rust looks to be mostly surface rust, so there is no damage to the ship but I do agree that it is frustrating to see something so great rusting away slowly.
buk1237 She is the only US heavy cruiser left in the world. Truly irreplaceable museum. It's on my list of ships to visit, just haven't made it there yet!
In real life: The best Fire control system and Surveillance radar
In the game: The worst Fire control system and Surveillance radar
Nice work WG!
WG excel in making a ship the complete opposite, for numbers of ships in the game
RL *strong armor*
In game *gets cut through like butter*
They have the ship at Quincy, Massachusetts. I went there and found something signed by Teddy B Roosevelt and a cassette tape with a tape inside it that said âA Victory Over The Lakeâ, Iâll come back and listen to the whole thing.
Now, that is a "cruiser!" It's a shame we don't make them like that anymore.
Reasons: Supersonic Jet fighters carries anti ship missiles.
Yeah the closest the US has now is the Ticonderoda class but even that is retiring soon.
@@zachcast2735 well, Russia has the Kirovs, and tbh the zumwalt is pretty impressive too
A medida que la tecnologia avanza , esos mounstros son inncesesarios , todo se a hace a menos escala y con mas tecnologia
Well Cruiser Moskva already sank
So much rust on that poor girl, she deserves some TLC.
I think the only funding they get are from tours and donations! Volunteers do most of the work.
@@nightlightabcd As a volunteer aboard the ship, I can most certainly agree.
The best part about this ship in game is that in real life, 5-6 seconds was actually the reload rate of each gun at full loading speed, allowing each gun to expel approximately 10-12 shells per minute
8-10 rounds per minute per barrel!
It's videos like these that really show Wargaming's love for military tanks, ships, and hopefully aircraft will get the same treatment after they recraft World of Warplanes.
Thanks for making them!
They're remaking World of Warplanes?
From what I understand, yes. It was such a dismal failure they're going back to the drawing board.
Nice. I like Wargaming's style, but no one I know liked Warplanes. They all play WarThunder instead.
I heard it on one of The Mighty Jingles Mingles with Jingles, I think. He'd really burned Wargaming hard for the crappy quality and performance of World of Warplanes, for which they weren't happy. Not too long ago they realized that all the bad publicity was right. The game sucked, so they're going back to the drawing board.
I do hope they make it work this time. I'd love to get into squadron battles with my clan. :)
Joshua Burgess I am a player of world of warplanes and I do like the game but there are not many players on the servers to make the multiplayer part any fun but the game does have games were you can battle bots, I did have to get war Thunder to get to play warplanes in multiplayer. But I do recomend world of warplanes.
I visited the vessel yesterday. Visiting the vessel is the greatest experience in my life. I sure enjoy being a Des Moines fan.
Only played a few hours so far, but absolutely love it! And these videos are damn impressive! Love the history lessons
What a beauty. The size of her for her class and the way she was made reminds me of the old super frigates from around 1812.
Best introduction of all Naval Legends episodes!!
Salem was used to portray the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee in the 1956 film The Battle of the River Plate, although the original German ship had a single triple gun turret placed forward of the superstructure where the Salem has two triple gun turrets forward of its superstructure.
I love the channel, they get all sides of the story. Hearing the different languages shows authenticity to history not politics.
I see her everyday :D
Just waiting for the USS. Missouri
Still waiting
*still waiting*
I just finished my grind to this legendary cruiser.
I want to thank you for their gifts of super containers and other rewards from this update that made this coal grind possible, that I have finished it just 4 days before the game's 5th birthday.
More than two years after my visit to the USS Salem, I stand on her helm again, in the high seas of World of Warships.
Theater ships were so advanced for there time. I was on the USS St. Paul CA 73 (66-68) It was a little older but it had a lot of fighting muscle.
But in the Gulf of Tonkin
The crew had no Air Condition and it was so hot when we were there.
The officers had A/C and so did sick bay and the oil shack. I worked in #3 fire room. At times it could climb to 160 deg in those spaces. If it wasnât for the heat I would have stayed in for 20+.
It was still a great experience .
We took a lot of incoming at times. How ever our luck ran out and we took a direct hit in the bow at the water line. A north vietnam artillery unit got lucky. I was in the fire room ant could hear the echo thru the ship.
Fortunately it hit officers country berthing compartments and 3 store rooms just at the water line. They flooded rather fast.
Everyone did there job and things got secured. A Tempoary patch was welded over the large hole in our side and we stayed on the gun line and did our mission. Looking back on event we were all young kids. 18-23 year olds. People grow up fast when they are trained properly for those conditions. These cruisers were designed to take a real beating and keep fighting. We trained all the time and prepared for just about anything.
Amazing what kids can do when trained properly.
We fired so many 8â rounds we replaced our gun barrels two times while I was on board. The ship was definitely used to its fullest extent over there. But not for anti aircraft missions. We did not encounter that( thank God).
The New Port News relived is off the gun line a couple of times. She was a good looking ship also. I wish we had there air conditioning system. Lol.
Needless to say after working in a hot boiler room and after discharge I went into heating and air conditioning. Iâve been in my own Busness for over 40 years. Thanks to that cruiser and the US Navy, they gave me a trade.
Sir that is a awesome story I love hearing veterans experiences over seas and just training its really amazing how people from all different back grounds can become brothers during war time
You guys keep producing great historical videos. Excellent job!
Thank you for making these awesome documentaries.
That was awesome thank you to whoever made this!
06:13 Awesome firing smoke I've ever seen
Do the USS Massachusetts!!! Battleship Cove FTW
It's good to USS Salem in video, planning to visit that ship soon, my grandpa was one of the first crews of that ship
Those 8 in. guns were just awesome!!!! They really could tear some sh&% up, absolutely devastating weapons!
i love the detail to its superiority to other ships that they give hear ns
They should do a Naval Legends on the USS West Virginia, it had an interesting service.
Amazing ship. Although it is great that the war ended, it would have been amazing to have seen film of her in action, doing what she was designed to do.
Love this video.. Really helped with my designing a 17 foot long model of this ship built out of Lego. :)
I built her in lego but its only 1.6 feet long :p
im currently making a 450 mm long model of the salem to 3D print.
@@micahanglen4331 do you have a place where I can âbuyâ the model. I have a 3D printer.
What a wonderful creature it is!
Great, educational video, thank you.
And if memory serves me correct she played the part of the Graf Spee in the British war film âBattle of the River Plateâ
Even though she has too many turrets to play Graf Spee. Sad to see her rusting tho. Maybe USS Salem should be moved to Battleship Cove; they take good care of the warships there.
I can remember my experience on the USS Salem.
It's good for Salem to be alive today. Des Moines wasn't so lucky to be saved.
Andredesmoinesew same with Newport News.
One badass ship imagine it wouldâve entered in the beginning of the war
Today,s USA Navy is way different from WW 2 vessels but The beauty and sight and firepower from those Ships were something else . Big Guns ÂĄđ
I'd like you guys to do a Naval Legends video on Taffy 3 in the Pacific Theater during World War II. It's an awesome story that should be shared to the community.
Des Moines seems nearly as large as the USS New Jersey I was just aboard! Absolutely massive for an 8" Heavy Cruiser! Nearly as large as the Alaska class, and she's "all but" a Battlecruiser!
Vs Destroyers, Salem wouldâve easily massacred them one after anouther.
Vs Light cruiser, Salem would effortlessly crush them.
Vs heavy cruisers, Salem wouldâve pummeled them to their doom.
Vs Aircraft Carriers, Salem could easily just shred plane after plane with extreme ease, and if it met their carrier, murdered it.
Vs Battleships, they might look intimidating, but the Des Moines class if at a far away enough distance, they were capable of setting even Yamato ablaze and reduce the entire superstructure, AA defense, and secondary load to a ravaged steel inferno, and possible destroy all control of the ship from the superstructure.
This really is the true cruiser king.
Can two Des Moines-class heavy cruisers knock down an Iowa Battleship?
Salem (aka Des Moines) has shitty ballistics
The Salem is in ok but deteriorating shape, if you have the opportunity to visit it I'd highly recommend. Its got to be an expensive ship to keep preserved though so if you want it for future generations, maybe add the museum to your Christmas donations.
the most OP ship in the game
êčìŹí hell ya
Handsome looking ship.
*DON'T TREAD ON ME*
The Bismarck was definitly a naval legend.. even if i prefer the Tirpitz :P and of cause the Scharnhorst.
***** will take some time until we see her on a Naval Legends episode
atm they are just going threw american ships and after them we will get the Japanese ones
german ones will probably be the last ones they do as they are the last ones to be added to the game
Why is that an important distinction to make? The Bismark and Tirpitz were impressive ships, something all Germans would be proud of, I'd think. But I'm not German, so perhaps you can help me understand why you think they should be called Nazi ships instead?
Bryan Jonsson i think you answered to the wrong comment nobody said anything about ''nazi'' ships
TROOPER685HD - Can't argue with that!
Tripitz most likely wonât get a naval legends episode since she just sat at anchor for the entire war until she was sunk. However, Scharnhorst had a better career.
It's sad to see such a great ship, in such need of a little TLC. But it's a great video.
Again, can we please see more on other nations ships during the world wars!
It might be a bit difficult to get stories and pictures of ships from other countries. Give them time.
Now a book that had the USS Salem in it makes sense. It's a shame the U.S. does not feel the need for similar rolled ships, and most ships are now down gunned and armored, in the hope of just letting the shell go through.
jasnix modern millitary ship design is focused on not getting hit at all like pre Composite armor tanks
Alice Lynn invisibility is the best armor you can have
I drive by the Salem everyday itâs located in Quincy ma next to the four river bridge and every time I look at Iâm just fascinated by war ships amazing . I new it was a Cruiser so cool Iâm wanna look into how I can get on it and check it out . I served in OIF as n infantry man with the army but loved war ships since I was a kid
Bro I wish I lived closer to literally any of these museum ships
i live like 3 towns away from this ship. its cool to see it here though
I live about 7-10 towns away
Callsign Spartan Airsoft I live in yeh same city, Quincy
@@t26e44 same, quincy is the way to go
WoW makes better history videos than the history channel
I thought that mustache went illegal a long time ago...
RCN2820 đ
We need a tier 8 for WoWS Legends. USS Salem should be at the top
I know these old ships cost money to keep but they should be kept as a reminder of how it was
Two corrections are necessary. 1. THe 5â dual purpose guns were the 5â 38 caliber not 32 caliber guns. Second the other 5â gun quoted are actually the new 3â AA weapon, too late for war action but meant to handle Kamakazi attacks better than the 40 mm Boffors weapon.
that star wars theme music thou
Music for the ending?
As far as the rest that is mentioned by several comments, I didn't see much rust till about three fourths the way thrrough, then there is a lot of rust! I agree, she looks very neglected to me to!
Clean them up, tech them up and let them join a couple of amphib groups. Eight inch support with 21st plus century tech. I think the amphib troops would like that support.
What was the fire rate of the dual purpose secondaries
Stupid question:
What song starts at 10:20?
Great series though.
why is this video unlisted? it should be shared with everyone!
I just visited SALEM, and it is sad how much rust there is.
Why did this contain very little mention of the Salem's sister-ship, USS Newport News CA-148, that did three tours in Vietnam, pounding the enemy with her big guns? While serving on board Newport News, I had a Chief Gunners Mate that had started his career during World War II, tell me, "if we'd had ships like this during WWII, the sea war would have been over pretty quick."
i would love to see the uss alaska in game
Wish granted!
hey, make naval legends for Battle of Midway please
I think the mount missing would probably was removed for better stability during rough weather maybe I have read a similar case of a ship of that time period. But only a guess so many great ships ww2 post ww2 into the Cold War era đ
Wow, surprised to hear that heavy cruisers carried 16" guns. Before I thought only battleships had those guns.
@Locke Haney The Des Moines class had mk16, 8" guns ( 5:30 )
@@rsj2771 They are 8 inch 55 caliber, the largest brass propellant cased ammo the USA ever used. I threw my back out putting an empty 8''-55 case in my car.
Are the 3"/50 Mark 22s or Mark 34s?
Music in the video?
10:10 I am very disappointed in the mispronunciation of Des Moines.
The S are silent.
My grandpa was a crewman on the salem
I was always curious, as to why Salem was chosen as a museum, instead of Des Moines or Newport News.
Why do they have this clothe protection on the outside of the cvannons?
Ah so this is where the Salem Witch idea came from for the Halloween event!
+joerogrz Bingo and the Phantom Fortress is an Essex class, based off of the USS Hornet (CV-12) which is renowned as a haunted ship and on which WG held an event just this week. WG looked for real life inspiration in choosing the ships for the event.
Do USS New Jersey!
Can you rework Des Moinesâs armor?
Music at 5:30?
Why not use the metric system in the videos since its the most used system in the world?
When dose this game come out
It made a fire ring
This is one of your earlier videos, not as good as the latter one's which include the curators of the ships instead of wargaming employees. Nevertheless, still a good piece. I started to say you should have included the videos of these auto loading cannons which is what made these ships so unique, but then I found a later video (a year or so ago) doing just that. Well done.
whats different between a battle cruiser and heavy cruiser? i always see heavy cruisers as the same battle cruisers can someone tell me what is different between them.
Battlecruiser are Fast Battleship, like the hood and kongo, they have the same gun as a Battleship, they have the same size and around the same height, but have less armor and more speed than true Battleship.
Heavy cruiser are smaller than battleship and battlecruisers, they have a little bit less armor, they have smaller gun, but are more manoeuvrable, they also have a quicker reload and are great to take out destroyers.
"The Giant that was late for the war." .... Apt description of the U.S. but we came back with a vengeance ... The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance .. we shackled ourselves with pacifist laws to prevent the inevitable ... After Pearl I don't know who had the greater sigh of relief, FDR or Churchill...
Its America in both world wars.
They never show up on time.
@@estradaaaronjans.7084 America as a whole for the most part tried to stay out of world war 2 and we would have if it wasn't for Japan surprise attack on us.
