    -The USS NJ is the most-decorated battleship in US history.
    -Fought WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon
    -Along with others in her class was the fastest battleship in history
    -The Iowas were improved versions of the North Carolinas, with higher speed, somewhat more advanced 16" guns, and better torpedo protection.
    -In fact when NJ was reactivated in the 1908s they had to scrounge parts from the NC to service her
    -The 16"/50 Mk VII fired a slightly lighter shell than the Japanese 18", but the shell could travel roughly the same distance and actually the muzzle velocity of the 16" was significantly higher, resulting in equal or better penetrating power than the 18" shells from the Yamato.
    -"The Big J" was Halsey's flagship for a period of time during WWII
    -When the Japanese accepted surrender terms, many assumed the NJ would get the honor of hosting (having already earned 9 battle stars) but it occurred onboard the Missouri because that was Truman's home state.

    I've toured the USS New Jersey and it is awe inspiring. FUN FACT: As part of the caretaking agreement between the Battleship New Jersey Museum and the United States Navy, the museum must not tamper with the preservatives the US Navy put into the engines. In times of national emergency, the US Navy reserves the right to reclaim the ship and put her back into action. I highly recommend touring an Iowa Class battleship.

    • @loonowolf2160
      @loonowolf2160 PÅ™ed 4 mÄ›síci

      No they can't put them back in action at all, no crews, no ammo, no shells, no gunpowder bags, no gun barrel to replace, oil would be too much too, u can very well check this from USS Winsconsis Wikipedia page. It's literally written there, the Navy no longer interested to bring them back into action no need of them all.
      Congress had ordered that the following measures be implemented to ensure that Wisconsin could be returned to active duty if needed:
      She must not be altered in any way that would impair her military utility.
      The battleship must be preserved in her present condition through the continued use of cathodic protection, dehumidification systems, and any other preservation methods as needed.
      Spare parts and unique equipment, such as the 16 in (406 mm) gun barrels and projectiles, must be preserved in adequate numbers to support Wisconsin, if reactivated.
      The Navy must prepare plans for the rapid reactivation of Wisconsin should she be returned to the Navy in the event of a national emergency.[43]
      These conditions closely mirrored the original three conditions that the Nation Defense Authorization Act of 1996 laid out for the maintenance of Wisconsin while she was in the mothball fleet.[40]
      On 14 December 2009, the US Navy officially transferred Wisconsin to the city of Norfolk, ending the requirement for the ship to be preserved for possible recall to active duty. The US Navy had paid the city of Norfolk $2.8 million between 2000 and 2009 to maintain the ship.[44] A formal ceremony transferring the ship to the city of Norfolk took place on 16 April 2010.[45][46] Wisconsin was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 28 March 2012.
      Visitors have included the crew of the Royal Navy's HMS Prince of Wales, who also volunteered to help clean and repaint Wisconsin while stationed in Norfolk during the WESTLANT 23 naval aviation trials in 2023.[47]

      It’s quite literally the best human made fast battleship in history, so it’s not a big surprise. The Yamato? Nah. It lacked speed, stability, Anti-Air guns, Radars, Advanced fire control systems, and it had severe flaws with its 155mm turrets, which was penetrateable with even 150mm guns or a single air to land bomb dropped from a Corsair. Also SHS rounds fired from New Jersey could penetrate the Yamato’s deck from over 32 kilometers away.

    Actually, USS New Jersey was the most decorated Battleship, but not the most decorated ship. That honor belongs to the USS Parche. However, since this series focuses on 20th century ships, the most highly decorated ship of the US Navy of that time is the USS Enterprise CV-6(which they should really do an episode on btw)

    • @Atlantis8100
      @Atlantis8100 PÅ™ed 8 lety +26

      +Cjfedler 327 On technicality, WG.NET are correct. NJ is the most decorated *ship*, as Submarines are considered boats. Never call a submariner's vessel a ship to their face. ;)

      USS Enterprise has 20 battle stars, as opposed to New Jersey's 19. so even still, they were wrong. it's the most decorated Battleship, but the CV-6 is higher decorated still

    • @Atlantis8100
      @Atlantis8100 PÅ™ed 8 lety +21

      + Cjfedler 327 Decorations don't refer to battle stars. Ships are given service awards just like personnel are, and New Jersey's service jacket extends across WW2, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf. CV-6 was scrapped by 1960. Compare Enterprise's commendations (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(CV-6)#Awards_and_commendations) with New Jersey's. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_New_Jersey_(BB-62)#Awards)
      New Jersey may have less WW2 battle stars, but she is more highly decorated.

    I find it funny that the naval historian in his video says that the 16"/50 Mk VII is just as powerful as the Japanese 18.1" gun, and yet in game there is a massive disparage in performance between the two guns. Oh Wargaming, you never cease to amuse me.

      +Fighterpilot555 Well, I think they meant the same penetrating power. If you've ever played War Thunder, you'll know that just cause two guns have identical penetration doesn't mean they're equal. The round on Yamato is bigger, so when it penned it would do more damage theoretically. Still doesn't explain why Yamato's guns are so accuarte compared to Monty though. Monty and Iowa should be at the very least MORE accurate than Yamato. Have Yamato hit hard yes, but that accuracy has to go down a bit ad Monty's armor needs a tiny buff and the Monty's guns needs an accuracy buff

    • @I-02

      So you mean not Japanese at all :P

    • @Hakumai_o7
      @Hakumai_o7 PÅ™ed 8 lety

      Nguyen Johnathan First off, Admiral who? I'm trying to look for a source to your quote here but I can't find one. As I remember, Yamato never once had a Admiral named Miyaki on board; the only Admiral's to assume command of Yamato were Yamamoto and Kurita, and they both believed in the Yamato immensely like the rest of Japan, so if you could link me to this diary thing that would be great. And also, naval analysts have concluded that Yamato's guns, in terms of velocity, would have been slightly inferior to the US 16's, but also packed a heavier punch due to their extra weight and size. This is why the Mark 8 "Super-Heavy" shell was produced, to make the US 16's be on par with the Yamato's 18's in terms of stopping power (they already had the velocity advantage). I already agreed with you that Yamato needs some slight nerfs, but I think a buff to Montana would be more prudent
      And also, I am half Japanese as well (half German half Japanese), but how does that factor into this? Are you insinuating that because of your family's background, that makes your opinion more "correct" because you're half Japanese? I'm not trying to attack you here, but leave your family's nationality out of any argument, and don't use it as such. Being half-Japanese doesn't make you know more about Japanese stuff by default

      Don't get me wrong, I love Yamato. Its a beautiful ship that truly embodied Japanese might, but she was no match for the Iowa and class, and thats just fact. Iowa had it all. Basically the same guns, better, AA, better radar which equaled higher accuracy even while maneuvering, better speed, better range....Iowa can do everything Yamato can and better in some cases. Only in the armor category does Yamato win out, but even still the Mark 7 50 cal gun has been proven to be able to punch through armor of the same caliber of Yamato's belt. In my personal opinion, Iowa could be the tier 10 US BB, but we all know we wanted Montana in the game ;)

    • @MLGVorkScoper
      @MLGVorkScoper PÅ™ed 8 lety +8

      You have that exactly correct. In my opinion, the Montana isn't an upgrade in any way in the game except for the extra turret. Personally, i think the Iowa should be t10, and the Montana t9. Looking at it now it seems weird but when you think logically about it, the Iowa is a better match against the Yamato than the Montana is.

    • @Hakumai_o7
      @Hakumai_o7 PÅ™ed 8 lety +24

      ***** I tend to disagree in that regard. In game, the Yamato is currently much stronger than Montana because of the buff to its guns. This was needed, but it isn't historically accurate. In real life, in my opinion, Montana would still be a more competent opponent to Yamato. And extra three US 16's is a HUGE upgrade in artillery power in a battleship vs battleship engagement, and artillery is the bread and butter of battleships might in a fight against another surface vessel. Combine that with Montana's extra armor, and the same accuracy and radar control as Iowa, Montana would've been an absolute monster that would've torn the Yamato to shreds in a real life engagement

    Admiral Spruance had 6 Battleships prepared to go against the Yamato in case it made it past the the Helldivers, the Avengers, rocket & bomb carrying Corsairs and Hellcats. The battleships were the Massachusetts, Indiana, the South Dakota, the Missouri, the Wisconsin and the New Jersey. This also included 8 cruisers that included super cruisers Guam and Alaska.
    The USN lost very few flyers. On one level it would be interesting to see Yamato try to fight those 6 battleships. However, more Americans would have died and better few dead than one final battleship vs battleships battle....

    My mandolin has an armrest attached made from teak taken from the decks of BB-62, USS New Jersey.

      As a fellow musician, I think your mandolin is my favorite ever now.

    Grew up on BB63 - 6th Division. Youngest Helmsman at 17; Enlisted at 17, turned 18 between Sydney and Perth on the way back from the Persian Excursion 87/88. Also served as POIC in the Power Flats of Turret 2 for a period of time, among other things. Ship to Ship, it's the Crew who make the difference... 62 didn't put 215-5" and 48-16"/50's down range in 5 minutes... We did! Sink-ex 89. It was an impressive shoot off for the Battle E. We also took part in the largest gathering of Warships since WWII, that was unreal; some things you just have to experience. While now antiquated due to AI, drones, rail-guns, and stealth vessels. BB's are the only ships I know of to boast such a motto "Fear God Dreadnought". And when your steaming through a hurricane, you understand why.

    Are we supposed to ignore the fact that the USS New Jersey actually sank an Island with it's powerful cannons?

    All though most of these ships never saw real battle, their truly monstorous statistics deserve to be called legendary. Seriously 60 thousand tons and artillery bigger than anything we have had in my countrys history. Its pretty amazing :)

    It is really fun seeing the ships in person. I saw the New Jersey and the Wisconsin.

    I agree with many commenters that these documentaries by this game company are outstanding. I've never played the game, but I love watching these.

    Got to board this ship when it was still in service while it was in port at Pearl Harbor. It was awesome. Still is!
