I was wearing my natos in this sort of way and it was great. But one day, on a whim, I decided to wear my nato the traditional way and I have not returned to the alternate way. For some reason (prior military here) I prefer the traditional way for my 42mm and below watches. The traditional way has a way of making smaller watches look bigger than they are. And, I dig that. 😂

Yeah, naah... I knew about this method and gave a try, but having to go thru the loop and then the buckle when putting on the watch was so annoying that I went for the scissors and my life is better and happier now :) Don't be afraid of the scissors guys!

Criticism of the NATO strap is totally unjustified. Cutting the extra strap or reworking it like explained here defeats the purpose of keeping the watch away from the wrist to allow ventilation and lessen sweating. Also the watch can be stowed by reverse looping and it provides substantial cover for the front and back of the watch when kept with other items in the bag or pocket. It's the ultimate utilitarian strap.

I use another method. On the bare strap I first pull the strap through the loop of the flappy bit, then fold it back on itself with the loop as close to the other two. Then add the watch and see to it that the extra bit of folded flappy strap reaches right in-between the lugs. This will keep it in place. Now wear it as you would normally do. There's only one way to wear a NATO strap, the way it was designed to be worn. It was designed as such, that if the watch became in anyway detached from one lug, it would still be attached to the other lug, thus not loosing the watch. Therefore, to chop a NATO, or not fit it correctly, is to mess with the fundamental integrity of the design, so what's the point?
