I got the sense what she really meant by that was she did not want to look bad in front of her church community by getting a divorce, but behind “closed doors” anything was fair game (adultery, murder, etc.)

Yes Cheryl WIlliams, Michael's mother played a huge role in keeping this case alive for eighteen years. Denise's behavior toward her was appalling from the very beginning of this case, including preventing Cheryl from having any contact with her grand child (Michael and Denise's daughter).
Exactly! That poor lady fought like hell to find justice for her son. Her statement during Denise’s trial is absolutely heartbreaking.

I was very touched by the fact that Mike's mother campaigned for years to have her son's case reopened. They all called her crazy, but she fought hard and got some semblance of justice.

And while the 2 couples were still married, Denise and Brian were constantly having secret rendezvous. Mike’s Mother never gave up. I can’t remember what channel it was, but at the end, Mike’s sweet precious Mother spoke to the court. It was just heart breaking. She always knew they did it. And Denise refused to let her see her only granddaughter. 😢
Thank you for covering this story. These two couples graduated from a private "Christian" school and were very indoctrinated in conservative religious beliefs. Somehow, Denise came to believe that divorce was more sinful than having a long term adulterous affair with her husband's best friend and committing murder to get out of the marriage. Denise Williams was definitely not innocent, but is a very cold and manipulative person.
Apparently later she backslid because she was talking divorce in the next marriage

@@eadweard. true. It's about concern over the way people perceive you. I could be any facade. In this case it's "conservative religious person". Keeping up appearances and the fear of losing ones role in a social circle are a big factor of so many murders.

Denise could've easily just given Brian some money to go away. She was too greedy; and too confident.
I watched a documentary on this case last year. The police didn't keep the case active at first. Mike's mother never gave up and kept on and on not letting Mike be forgotten. She even stood at intersections with a sign asking if anyone knew anything. Her perseverance paid off. I feel the wife was on board and deserves life without parole.
Exactly. Wife was a big part of it. The murderer never promised to love honor protect and cherish. She did. She was the one Mike trusted. Infidelity she willingly had sex with another man knowing it was wrong. I guess religion didn't matter at that point! Sick pigs
Absolutely she was on board with the murder. Brian wouldn't have gone through with all that if he was unsure of Denise's reaction. Her role was very important.

Michael likely didn’t even register what the hell was going on. He’d just won a literal fight for his life, was clinging to a tree stump no doubt trying to breathe normally again and planning his next move to get the hell out of there when this coward likely shot him before he could even register what happened.
Also love it how Mrs Wife here is so very devoutly religious she couldn’t possibly divorce, but is perfectly AOK with infidelity and murder.

Meh. I've been there. After the first two or three murder attempts, you get used to them trying to kill you.
Mike’s mother mentioned in her victim impact statement that until the day she dies, she’ll have nightmares of that exact moment. Her son struggling to stay afloat while his best friend circles around him waiting for the right moment to shoot him in the head. How terrified he must have been. My condolences to her and the rest of the family!
My dad who lives in Tallahassee talked with Mike a few weeks before he disappeared about some work project. Said he was a kind and helpful man. His family worked very hard in trying to solve his disappearance. I remember the fliers and even picket signs they’d hold out.
Given the situation, I’m glad justice was served and his family gets a sense of closure.
Just as an aside, as a former avid flyfisher, your waders will not “drag you down” if they fill with water while you’re still in the water, they will have neutral buoyancy. They will definitely be a hindrance if you try to climb out the water onto the bank or into a boat, though. I speak from experience, having fallen in many times. You may have to shuck off your waders in the water in order to get out, but they won’t pull you down while you’re in the water.
They act much like a suction cup when filled with water, keeping you suctioned to the surface

I totally agree. Waders, boots, heavy clothes, none of that will drag you under when you fall in. It'll all become neutrally buoyant. They just make it harder to get out of the water, but they don't drag you beneath the surface. Interestingly, if you're calm and the water isn't super choppy, you can lie back a bit and float and your head will stay above the water, even in fresh water (you are less buoyant in fresh water than in saltwater). People usually drown because of panic, although rough water and undertow currents can easily overcome your natural buoyancy and lead to drowning if you aren't a strong swimmer or are exhausted. If you fall in, first lean back and calm down. If your head starts to bob under, move your feet around a little bit to push it back up, and lean your head back and your stomach forward, and you'll be fine. Humans naturally float, particular those with a few extra pounds, since fat is less dense than water. After you suppress your initial panic, then figure out how to get out.

I fell in quite a few times (we used to joke about jumping in at the start of the season to get it over with) and just let the current carry me a little ways to where I could ground myself and pull my waders down and empty most of the water and crawl out. I lost a couple of hats and sunglasses but I grimly held on to my rod in case I had to fight off a hungry trout. It’s only when you try to get out that you feel any water you’ve accumulated. I usually wore a belt with my waders so I usually only managed to ship a couple of gallons. Have a great day.

I'm from Tallahassee as well. I agree 100% with everything you said. The wife of a coworker worked with Denise when she was arrested. She acted surprise that the police showed up to escort her out of the office.

She married her husbands killer, and had over a Million dollars in insurance payout as motive. She's definitely guilty. She should've been sent away for life without.
Denise is 51 years old now. At 81 when she gets out I doubt she will be a danger to society. That being said I live in Florida and followed her trial and if hadn't been for Mike's mother, who never gave up for 20 years, I don't believe she or Brian would ever have been caught and tried. Sick woman. His mother's victim impact statement at the sentencing AND at the appeal hearing was the most powerful one I have ever heard.
When I heard Sheryl impact statement at the re-sentencing hearing I said that monster will spent the next 30 years in prison. Sheryl is a super strong woman and a true hero.
Sadly it’s only 25 1/2 years after her good time. She should be in there until the day she dies. I don’t know why this case really disgusted me.

Actually, he clarified in his parenthetical to avoid confusion. Secondly, there is a large body of case law regarding grandparent visitation rights.

That’s a pretty important relationship for someone that just lost a child. If you loved your spouse and then loose them a relationship with your spouse’s parents after their death seems expected.

The reason Denise cut off Michael’s mother was because his Mother new she was involved in the disappearance and death, she NEVER gave up posting billboards all over town contacting police over and over.. Denise told her if she didn’t stop she’d never see the baby again. His Mother said as much as she loves her only grandchild, she would NEVER stop looking for her only child.. her beloved son Michael.
Excellent analogy to “The Telltale Heart”. It is one of my favorite Poe stories and I have seen it play out in real life. Similar to Rev. Dimmesdale in the “Scarlet Letter” by Hawthorne. The iniquity weighs and creates its own punishment. Of course, Denise must have skipped over some things in her Bible if she thought divorce was religiously distasteful, but adultery and murder would be ok.

Everyday he came to the scaffold and stood in those masses shunning her as if he was innocent. Plus, Hester’s husband, Roger Chillingsworth, was in the crowd and he was quite visible to the Rev. and another reminder of the sin he was hiding. As time goes along, he becomes more bent and unwell because of the weight of the iniquity that he bore. Hester wore her scarlet A and dressed Pearl in scarlet as her public punishment. She was dealing with it, while the Rev. Was hiding it. How much better would it have been if Denise had just gotten a divorce, Michael would have lived to help raise his family, and she could have married Brian. Instead, they did it their way and the iniquity of their murder and greed led to their patting each other down for wires and checking for phone taps, and extreme paranoia. Step up, admit what you did, who you are and go on with life. Otherwise the iniquity and guilt will “getcha” eventually. My dissertation for the day! 😁👍🏻

How can a DA make such an egregious plea bargain? I am a Brit and we don't have such a thing here.
Also... I really like the format of these videos. Just facts and a timeline followed by a short analysis. Compare that to the 'mainstream' crime programs where 15 mins of facts are spun out to multiple episodes with restarts for add breaks where the whole story is repeated before moving on. Good job.
I think Keith got 20 years for kidnapping Denise. So he’s probably going to die in prison. The plea bargain enabled them to get Denise.

I agree. And it’s just too much incentive for the prisoner to get revenge on his victim by implication her in a different crime. Maybe she was guilty of conspiracy to commit murder. But maybe not. There is more than reasonable doubt. The only evidence is testimony of a man who purportedly tried to murder her.

I remember watching Michael's mom (Ms. Cheryl) on the news throughout the years, I remember her with her picket signs demanding justice for her son, she always believed he was murdered and never gave up on seeking justice for him🥺. I remember how sad she was that Ms. Denise never allowed her to have a relationship with her granddaughter (Michael's daughter). During Ms. Denise's trial, Michael's mom attempted to talk to her granddaughter but she was brushed off, it was heartbreaking. I sure hope Ms. Cheryl is doing well. Another great analysis, Dr. G ♥️
Besides "The Tell-Tale Heart", this store also reminds me strongly of "Thérèse Raquin", a mid-19th century French novel by Émile Zola. The murdered husband keeps showing up in the murderous couple's bed as an hallucination, driving them both to suicide.
Its interesting how many of these cases start with a normal childhood and upbringing but the more Grandes smooth narration takes us we descend deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole.

Poor Michael never knew what was coming until it was too late. It seems Brian and Denise were perfect for each other both evil and dumb, a lethal combination.

I've looked into all the details and machinations of this murder and they did come up with an almost perfect plan. They would have gotten away with it- if it wasn't for, well them. it's scary what moderately intelligent people can pull off when they abandon all morality.

This appears the be common sense but quite often we see people divorcing their spouses because they are in love with someone else, however they don’t take into account that in the same way they fell out of love with the first partner, they can also stop “loving” the next one, and the next, ….

It brought me tears when I heard Mike's mother spoke in front of judge. If not her years of continuous fight for Mike, this case probably wouldn't have had justice. She is a loving and strong woman just like Emmett Till's mother Ms. Mamie Till-Mobley. Much respect to them...

Apparently Denise's original plan was for Brian to kill his wife after killing her husband/ his best friend.
He had no problem killing his best friend yet murdering the mother of his children was a step too far.

@cris you really think that we don't all have the capacity buried in there? It's part of the human condition, my dude. Up until this point in their history, they had not been out committing murders. Regular people, by most standards. Something brought their evil to the surface and they acted on it.
@cris good and evil is just a lazy way of dismissing these events and never actually doing anything to understand, and hopefully prevent, similar events from taking place. It's a cop out. It's part of deviant human psychology, not some mythical construct.

Michael's mother is an incredible inspiration.
Jerry's mother deserves credit for spending the remaining years of her life investigating her son's disappearance, long after the police gave up and thought she was a nut. Her DIL Denise even threatened her, saying that if she didn't give up the idea that Jerry was murdered she would never be allowed to see his kids again. Jerry's mother said goodbye to the grandkids despite the heartbreak it caused, and continued her journey in trying to prove Denise was guilty of murdering her son. She didn't live long enough to see justice, but hopefully she's resting in peace with Jerry in a better place. A mother's love knows no bounds.

I knew Kathy Winchester, Brian's first wife. Kathy and I taught together at a private Christian school just outside of Tallahassee. I met Denise once for Kathy's baby shower, Denise was also pregnant, and very aloof. I remember getting the call from Kathy that Mike was missing and to please pray for them to find him.
Then a few years later, when Kathy and Brian were separating, Brian called me and asked me to tell Kathy not to divorce him. Then Brian marrying Kathy's best friend, Denise. It was all so confusing back then. And still is.
What I don't understand is how could Kathy could remain close friends with Denise, the woman who not only broke up their marriage, but played a part in the murder?I know this isn't what the video is about, but I've waited for the right community to share my association with this case. If anyone who watched the case and can share some inight, as to why they think Kathy remained close woth Denise, I'd appreciate it.
Because Denise became her son’s stepmother. I would imagine that when she found out that Denise wanted both Kathy AND Mike to have “an accident” that she was done with her.

This case breaks my heart. The crazy, desperate, romantic passionate phase of a relationship is temporary. Friendship is for life. Brian should have recognized this and put some major time and distance between himself and Denise.
I think this clearly illustrates that neither sexual relationships nor friendships are for life necessarily.
This case is not typical of either real love or true friendship!

As a Christian I find it so bizarre that some idiots actually justify cheating and murder but can’t reconcile divorce 😐. Adultery and murder don’t have excuses, meanwhile the Bible specifically outlines situations where divorce is possible, and yet they choose the former🤦🏽♀️.
I think it’s because they know they will be looked down upon by others for the divorce as it likely can’t be hidden while the cheating and murder can be hidden and therefor still be the victim after the murder . It’s more about self preservation then justification I think. To the public, not God, obviously. It’s so horrible because the husband was killed by the people he loved and trusted the most and was probably the only good Christian out of the 3!

Absolutely fascinating story, especially with how long they got away with it before being found out. Denise was able to live her best life and watch her daughter grow but what an evil woman for taking a father's life from his daughter just because she didn't want to divorce. The scary part of it all is that she would have gotten away with this murder if it hadn't been for her own selfish greed. She was willing to put Brian away for harrasing her when she had finally had enough of him and wanted to divorce him (divorce was alright with her this time round I guess) and expected that he would keep quiet in jail. Really? What did he have to lose at this point? She didn't even offer to split the insurance money she had collected with him. Her own greed got her put away in the end. May Michael finally rest in peace. Such a devastating story for their daughter and Michael's mother who never gave up on getting justice for her son, she is the real hero in all this.

The real reason is that they don’t want to be judged by others in their community for being divorced but if she killed her husband then everyone would just feel sorry for her. It’s just weakness pure and simple.
She didn't care about God. She cared about getting what she wanted in a way that would allow her to keep up appearances in the community, control the custody of her daughter, and protect her finances. That's why she preferred murder to divorce. It's clear none of her decision-making was motivated by sincere religious convictions.

The more I listen to, and watch Dr. Grande, the more I wonder, is the cactus symbolic of a type of humor so dry only a cactus could survive? Or is the cactus symbolic of the prickly stubble of his beard 🤔. I don't mind if it remains a mystery, I just was curious. I really enjoy this channel. I am relatively sure two commandments were broken so Denise wouldn't look bad to her family and friends, as well as collecting a lot of money for her husband's death (yet another broken commandment). Divorce the second time around was perfectly acceptable, because apparently murder is more of a headache than she had originally thought. Brian should not have been given immunity. If the investigation had gone further and not been closed so many times, perhaps it could have been solved, and both would have served life behind bars. "Tell-tale Heart" is a perfect analogy of this case.
Lazy investigative work. They should of never closed that case.

The whole family dynamic is super interesting (The family continued to support their son, even though they believed he was guilty and while he has been incarcerated for the murder) There is a really interesting documentary about it on here... would love to hear your take on it.

I often wonder how murderers go through their daily lives after they commit the act. How they must think about getting caught, possibly the paranoia is one effect.

I agree with you, Dr. Todd. There is at least reasonable doubt here. It’s likely she is guilty. But it makes no sense that her 2nd husband would try to kill her to keep her from turning him in for the previous murder…. Yet release her.
What if she is innocent and Brian killed her husband, later stalked and tried to kill her because she left him then later implicated her in his murder of her husband to get revenge on her for putting him in jail? We hear stories about men like this frequently. Men who are desperate to possess a particular woman. This story is quite plausible and is enough for reasonable doubt.
I fervently hope she is guilty. Could you imagine the anguish of being wrongfully jailed?
I don’t think it’s right to give full immunity to an actual murderer for implicating someone else as a conspirator when the person he has implicated was purportedly his own victim of a different crime. The murderer obviously has dubious character and credibility. And he has every reason to want to see one of his intended victims killed.
I do believe she probably had something to do with her first husband’s murder. But I have more than reasonable doubt.

Mike's mum was the hero in this case she never gave up. She brought me to tear. This is the worst betrayal ever! Brian testimony was heartbreaking it truly believes that keeping that secret most have been horrible all along, the audacity of Denis who requested 21 months to the judge when they both got away with murder for 18 years! Denis was concerned about what people may think of her if she would be divorced but a boy getting caught for murder is way worst and she threatened Mike's mum because she was seeking criminal investigation! Red flag!!!!
“Someone didn’t get all his ducks in a row”: what a case, what a case! Mike enjoyed duck hunting. It was a perfect cover for his wife and best friend to murder him. The plan was successful, but alligators, turtles, catfish, and water moccasins wanted their fifteen minutes of fame. Finally a nearly perfectly preserved skeleton was found under a pile of plywood. Psychics, insurance agents, high school sweethearts, and suicidal boyfriends all play their part before exiting from the stage. Trust is stranger than fiction in this one. Enjoy))))
Doesn’t this entire channel fly in the face of the Goldwater Rule? You violate Section 7.3 of the Principles of Medical Ethics with every video you post. Are you prohibited from practicing? It seems like you open yourself up to a vast amount of legal risk with what you do and I doubt your disclaimer will absolve you of it. It's almost exhausting just to hear what some people will put themselves through for money,let alone everything they lose and suffer in the end..That old saying that money is the root of all evil never goes stale...There are exceptions,but in alot of cases it seems to sniff out and lure a monster within...It just never ends !
