In the new age of graded magazines, I love that you stay true to what magazines are all about... flipping through, reading the articles and looking at the pictures. I interviewed Pat Donatelli this afternoon, son of Augie Donatelli, famous Nat'l League umpire who was on the cover of the 1st Sports illustrated. He had some great stories of being in dugouts as a kid with the likes of Roberto Clemente etc. His dad was a bona fide WWII war hero and is buried in a local military cemetery.

I appreciate that. Yes, unlike a card, a magazine has so much to offer inside. I enjoy the contemporary perspective to include not just the articles and photos but also the advertising.
Interesting you interviewed Augie Donatelli's son Pat. I don't know much about him. Is your interview available online?

@@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 So I have a HUGE sports mag collection that I amassed in Ebays infancy. I put it away for 20 years and just realized how valuable they've become. Now I'm 57, easing into retirement and am gonna have some fun liquidating my collection. I wanna put together interesting videos like yours to help chronicle the whole thing. I'm gonna slowly stitch some videos together so it'll probably be awhile before I put anything up. I'm in St Pete, Fl which has a crazy rich baseball history, mostly spring training, so I'm gonna do some vids on that.

You are amazing how you can look deep into the classic cards and vintage magazines and draw out the stories that may have been forgotten to history. This was a true football history lesson. Fantastic magazine with great information on the 1950 football season. I had never heard of most of the players you highlighted. Football was a different game then than it is today so all the records are held by modern players. But, going back and looking at who was leading the league for that era truly shows who was good back then.

Hi Terry. Another informative video with great introduction that draws the listener to want to know more. Your magazine "Sports Review" with its great stories and action photos help bring to like the players card board beauty. The 48 Leaf McAfee is so colorful. Sometimes as a buyer of cards, you must sift through much to pickup a vibrant copy that has not been faded by sun light. I enjoy how observant you are in picking out facts about the card that are not always apparent to most. Nice story by Fred on his designing a helmet to protect after having broken his nose.

Thanks Dan! For a video like this, I wanted to capture the era of the 50s before examining the magazine. I have great appreciation for this era of football and this magazine is a perfect piece for my collection. I love baseball equally as much, but I feel there is little out there on CZcams about this timeframe in football, so I hope to bring awareness to it, even if it touches just a few people.
I appreciate the comment about the details in cards and the story on Fred. Taking time to learn about the cards, players and eras is what fuels my passion as a collector.
Yes, you do need to sift through some cards until you find one that is a fit for your collection. I hesitate to say I look for one thing overall when buying cards because I don't. I have many things I factor such as my budget, price, opportunity, condition and the design. The latter is especially important. Some years like 48 Leaf, the color is so important, but even then, it depends on the card.
      Thanks, my friend.

Hi Terry! What fantastic information in this week’s video. My knowledge of late 40’s and early 50’s football is lacking and you filled a lot of info in 15 minutes. You did a great job capturing the magazine!
Really nice addition with the Sports Review. I didn’t even notice it was the Rams until you pointed it out. I thought it was the 49ers. The magazine looks like it’s in tremendous shape. I enjoyed seeing the stories and pictures you showed. And the Bowman cards that matches the photos was a really fun sight.
I love they George McAfee’s nickname on the back. Vibrant colors are the main thing that I look for when finding any card.

Hi Andy! I am glad you enjoyed the information in this week's video. It was a lot fun going through the magazine and finding cards to connect with the era. 15 minutes doesn't do it justice, but 10 to 15 minutes is my video sweet spot, so I do what I can to make it work.
I was shocked at the condition of the magazine. I knew it looked pretty nice, but usually at least the bottom corner wear you turn the pages will show some wear. It looks like it was barely read. I almost didn't want to go through it, but that is why I wanted it. Yes, it is a display piece, but I was more interested in looking at the pictures and reading the articles. The information on Van Buren was fascinating. I loved how his coach Greasy Neale compared him with Red Grange and Jim Thorpe. He actually saw those players play up close, so his opinion has weight.
The McAfee just jumped out at me. I didn't think I would win it because it was a Greg Morris auction of a set break. I ended up getting it for a fair price.
Thanks, as always. Have a great weekend!

Hey Terry! That magazine cover is beautiful. I wonder though how many people watching here know just how big Life Magazine was, as the issues they occasionally release today are smaller. That McAfee Leaf card really is vibrant, as you say. I'm pretty sure I heard you discuss the origin of the Rams helmet before, but I didn't know that they wore orange and red uniforms for one season. Looking at those cards you featured remind me several I want to get. Those old magazines really were - and are - treasures.

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  Před 23 dny

Hi Gannon! Good point about Life magazine. I may have to show that magazine again and compare it to a Sports Illustrated from the 70s or 80s, so younger viewers can get an idea of the size difference.
You probably heard Gehrke's story about painting the horn on the Ram's helmet from Chris at Stories in Cardboard. That is where I first learned of it. I may have touched on in the past how they were the first team to have logos on their helmets.
You're right. The old magazines are treasures. I have learned so much about the history of the game. Much of which I do not share in videos due to the time.
What have you been up to with your collecting lately? I have been spending time changing out some of my cases. I put together a 50s Bowman baseball display as well as cards from the 71 football and baseball set. Also, I am continuing to curate what I have. I am enjoying carefully going through my cards one at a time.

    • @jga59
      @jga59 Před 20 dny +1

Yes, It could be a good idea to show just how large the original Life magazine really was. For some of these young 'uns, you might as well just have been talking about Collier's or Punch! Lol. Of course, completely skipping all this wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea.
You're probably right about my getting the information about Gehrke and the Rams helmet from Chris. But I also may have read some of your exchanges with him in the comments sections as well.
On my end, I've been picking up a whole bunch of things, getting everything from some Venezuelan cards (Cesar Tovar and Vic Davalillo among others. I also love picking up cards of the Venezuelan players who didn't come to the Majors.) Got some 1969 football 4-in-1's and some 1971 game cards (Namath, Bradshaw, etc.) I used to have a bunch of those when I was a kid. Finally I decided to take my 1969 and 1970 Topps baseball cards and put them into binders. With a little focus and perseverance I could complete those sets. So I've been picking up a number of the cards that I need to complete them. I know you have the complete 1969 set. I actually went to a card show with a friend last month at Hofstra University on Long Island. That was fun, and I may go to the card show coming up in White Plains in August. Actually that's down from you, lol. I think the show is called the East Coast National. Who knows, maybe you'll hit the show too!

@@jga59 Hi Gannon! I plan on showing a standard size magazine and comparing it to the 1950 Sports Review. My viewers tend to be in their 40s and up but there are some who are not going to know that Life was a larger magazine.
It sounds like you’ve been busy adding an interesting mix of cards to your collection. That’s a good idea to get your 69 and 70 cards into a binder where they can be enjoyed. Especially, being they are years you remember collecting as a kid. It would be a lot of fun to thumb through a binder of players you recall watching as a child. The same is true with the 4 in 1 and Game cards. I see the Venezuelan issues occasionally on videos, but I have never owned one. I can see the allure in adding them. Last year, I lost on an auction for a 74 Venezuela Dave Parker sticker card that looks like 68 Topps.
White Plains is about 6 and ½ hours from my house. I am closer to Strongsville and the National. I couldn’t make Strongsville and will not be going to the National. Someday it would be nice to meet at a card show.

The art and colors are so vibrant. I have always enjoyed Fred Gehrke's story of painting the Rams logo, but I did not know he made a facemask. Were you aware that his great grandson is Christian Yelich? So much nostalgic in those magazines.
I heard you mention the importance of preserving the magazine so that other generations might enjoy it as well. Have you considered getting the magazine slabbed? I have an extensive comic book collection and while I slab cards, I don't slab comic books or magazines. I feared that if I were ever inspired to read it again, I would not be able to. However, I am giving some thought to slabbing some very rare comics that I have for preservation purposes. What are your thoughts?
Thanks and have a great weekend.

Hi Drew. Yeah, I didn't know about the facemask. I never knew the Rams wore the red and yellow for a year either. Interesting his great grandson is Yelich. I learned that too. Thank you.
I have never considered getting any of my magazines slabbed. I wouldn't rule it out, but I enjoy reading them. A magazine like The Sports Review I showed doesn't carry much value to make it worth grading. However, it is a piece I want to preserve because I don't think there are many in that condition, even if the demand is low. I do have some first cover Sports Illustrated magazines that would probably be worth grading, but I don't have an interest at this time.
If you have comics that are valuble grading may be a good option as you probably don't want to risk causing damage by reading them.
      Have a great weekend!

Hi Terry, man those Rams colors on the cover of the magazine are awful. hahaha. I don't like red. I never realized you have a lot of Rams cards. I know you only collect the key cards, but do you have you finished a team set?
That's a great story regarding the first mask. I can't imagine playing football without one. Looking at the pictures from the magazine, you can tell the game has come a long way. Those team pictures, I love them! As a kid, that would have sendup on my wall. Just like you mentioned, back then football teams usually squeezed into a baseball stadium. They didn't have stadiums of their own.
That's a great magazine. I would have buried myself with all those statistics. All I did was sit and analyze them and underline my team players so I could memorize them. The Otto Graham and Y.A. Tittle cards are great. The 50 and 51 Bowman's are just great.
    Thanks for sharing, Terry!

Hi Rick! I learned you are not a fan of red. I was also surprised to learn they wore those uniforms for a season. At first I thought it was Hirsch on the cover, but was just as happy it was Gehrke given he was the one who created the logo. I thought you knew I I had a bunch of Rams from that set. Haha. I probably have more Rams and Browns than any other team from the era. After the Cowboys, the Rams are probably the team I have the most football cards of. Bill Wade, Jon Arnett, Del Shofner, Roman Gabriel, Merlin Olsen, Deacon Jones, Lawrence Mccutchen, Jack Youngblood are all guys I like. In addition to the early 50s guys.
The stats page was fun to look at. It was pretty comprehensive.
      Thanks Rick!

The 50's was an interesting decade Elvis , Little Richard , Chuck Berry although Rock calmer compared to the 70's like Lynyrd Skynyrd
but heavier than the 40's !!!!
nice 1948 of George Mcaffee , nice leather helmets ,
is the color most important or the condition I understand being there were no supplys back then no hard plastics, no sheets and binders no screwdowns and no lucite cases you don't expect a near mint card but also you wouldn't want a card that has creases in them?
so would you rather have a card from 1948 that has sharp color but has creases looks like a 1.5 or would you rather have a card that's not the sharpest in color still nice color but not the sharpest and has 4 very bad corners some grazing on the side looks like a 3.5 to a 4?
do you think a Fred Gurkey card is in demand where tons of collectors are asking for it or not many collectors are asking for that card?
like not many collectors are asking for Mike Trout so his cards went down not many people looking at 8 track tapes or players so those items are down
what are you thinking about Fred?
    some nice cards nice magazine

Hi Mark! I don’t think Fred Gehrke is highly sought after. His card’s value mainly comes from being a short print in the set. I am sure there are some who want his card due to his contribution to the game but not many.
I would rather have a card without major creases and less color vs. bright colors and major creasing. The creases would take away from the card. A wrinkle or small crease with nice colors is fine.
Yes, the 50s were an interesting decade. It would have been fun to grow up during that time. Though our time was great too.
      Take care!
