Movies, games, and the occasional editorial.
From A-Z list films, video games, and other overlooked goodness. - Zábava
"I require pudding." The best line ever written by anybody anywhere in all of forever.
That baby really reminds me a lot of Rogu from American Dad.
Alternate universe where Mr. Smith is not an orangutan but a chimpanzee and is allowed to run multiple seasons when in season 2 his genius and outsized influence is exposed, forcing him to run for and win the presidency, and we finally get the "Hail to the Chimp" show The Simpsons promised us.
Margaret Trigg's story is absolutely heartbreaking.
After watching R.O.T.O.R. years ago, I found some old improv clips of her performing in NYC in different characters ...she was genuinely funny with a great comedic sense of timing. Her story really is tragic.
I read up about her after watching this, and yeah, it's terrible. She was slowly tortured to death over many years by her mental illness. The towels . . . my god.
They paid more attention to Julie Newmar than that other guy. Gee, never would’ve seen that coming!
The gorgeous star of My Living Doll gets all the focus. What a shocker.
@@leesimmons5453. They forgot to tell Bob Comings the name of the show....he thought it was called "Schlub". Only natural he thought it was about him.😂
Bob Cummings was a big and popular star.......who had the ego of a bigger and more popular star.
Of Course David Lynch made a "sitcom" and its the most terrifying thing ever.
The Aliens in the Family “teen” alien looks disturbingly like the creature in The Naked Lunch.
The David Cronenberg movie? Now that was one hell of an experience.
Do you think they also secrete that weird thing they gave to Peter Weller?
@@Malum09 Wouldn't surprise me.
@@Malum09 Mmmm, mugwump jism......
Nelson Muntz: I can think of at least two things wrong with that title.
Rabbits was so ahead of its time... but I couldn't tell you in which way. Insanely creepy and absurd.
Oh yeah, as a big Lynch fan I know all about Rabbits and am psyched as hell you mention it in this episode 🤘
He's a Genius 💯👍💪
3rd Rock was on NBC where I live
You are correct. 3rd Rock was aired on NBC, not CBS. CZcams essayists frequently fluff which networks vintage shows aired on.
This should be a pinned comment.
I immediately rushed to the comments to see if anyone else caught the mistake.
Came to point this out.
Minor CZcamsr "research "mistake.
I think they make these mistakes just to generate movement in the comments section.
"The 2000's version of the Wonder Years, with a big penis" are not words I thought I'd ever hear together, but here we are... still not as weird as Heil Honey I'm Home though.
I was wondering if you were going to mention "Aliens in the Family"'s Margaret Trigg. The thumbnail of your video alone made me think of her. I remembered her on this show (and whole-heartedly agree with your opinion on her beauty), and decided a few years back to look up what happened to her afterwards. Such a sad story. It's really stuck with me, and I'm sure you will do it justice.
I've also read the New York Magazine article on her, and it's a sad tale of caution when it comes of cosmetic obsession and wanting fame. Though I'm in SAG-AFTRA, I have writing aspirations. The video on her will be an interesting departure from the usual GBF fare (no more Master episodes?!).
Oh please, she did it to HERSELF and was a total narcisscisst
@@homelesshannah50 That doesn't mean she doesn't deserve any pity. If she was a true narcissist, she would have hurt someone else other than herself. Have some empathy.
@@homelesshannah50THAT is good magathink! When people are hurting, point and laugh.. hopefully your kids follow your example.
@@edwardspencer3906magathank? what you've just wrote is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this comment thread is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
“Welp, that’s a lot of weird..” 😂
It sounds like you needed to go outside and get a breath of air after all of this lol
Damn, pulled after TWO WEEKS. That's a serious lack of faith in a project, especially in those days. Hate to sound like an old man here but the young folks don't realize that the internet was in it's baby steps back then. You didn't hear about a new show on a review site or social media promos. You heard about these oddball shows at school and around work. For the mid 90's two weeks is so not enough time for a show to get word of mouth traction going. ABC must have had a real lack of faith in the show. I'm always delighted by how obscure some of your finds can be. Keep on digging them up, Cecil!
That's how long the Clerks cartoon lasted. Also on ABC. (I unironically like the Clerks cartoon.)
Not as expensive as the Dinosaurs but probably still expensive.
The amount of money a network could sell commercial time for was based on viewership. If a new show didn't get any traction, it made more sense financially to cut their loses and get something that would put eyeballs on screens. Would some of those shows have caught on eventually? Yes, but if the network can just throw on a rerun and make more money in the short-term, then they're not going to wait it out.
I was working for an ABC station at the time doing promotions and commercial work....the promos looked horrible. I never saw the show, well past the target audience for it, but if you take a moment and remember what ABC Network promos were like back then, you'll get a good idea why no one watched it.
IMO it was an awful show. The effects were decent for its time but the humor was lame (granted I was a teenager at the time it was out and I even revisited the show recently as a 40 year old, it’s still bad to me lol) and just wasn’t as fun as Dinosaurs.
That all said, I was really surprised back then how fast they pulled it from TGIF. 2 weeks then they randomly had a 2nd episode of Family Matters randomly occupying its timeslot. Was also surprised to see it randomly on Saturday morning when channel surfing too. Beside Dinosaurs & Sabrina the Teenage Witch, looks like fans just didn’t want these sci-fi/supernatural shows on TGIF as Teen Angel & You Wish came on and flopped as well.
The Hard Times of RJ Berger unlocked something in my memory I didn't know was there. I remember watching that as a teenager.
The aliens remind me of the alien from "Meatballs 2"😅
Hey,Meathead.
That movie was a lot funnier than it had any right to be. I'd take that over the completely unfunny Bill Murray first movie.
As soon as you mentioned the title, I suddenly remembered "Aliens in the Family." I only remember part of one episode. The oldest son got sick, and would sneeze up these little critter looking creatures. At one point, the younger human son tried to negotiate with said creatures to try and get sick as well.
I actually recorded that episode which is probably why I remember the series more than most.
Yeah, Muppets Tonight was more fondly remembered than Aliens in the Family. And the former's availability was restricted to TVrips from Europe's Disney Channel (and stray recordings from a Canadian channel now known as Yes TV) until someone found masters of various series 1 episodes for 'the Beeb'.
my brain went blank at hot alien
Best channel on YT. Thanks for digging up these weird citcoms!
Sil from "Species" show respect to Mathilda May in "Lifeforce"!
She was a space vampire, not a robot.
so sad that some of these are lost forever. thank you for bringing them up! i'd love to think there's a universe where Small Wonder and My Living Doll exist together as a dramatic comedy
Rabbits is basically what if a sitcom was existential horror.
"Okay, this is a web series, but..." shh shh shh shh, it's okay. Do what you gotta do. I'll gladly watch and listen.
You have given a name to a hazy memory of watching a super intelligent orangutan. Thank you, sir.
What? No Lancelot link? 😂😂
Well, its nice to see Roger Smith's origin story. He was the baby on the failed Aliens in the Family tv show.
Actually, 3rd rock from the sun was on NBC, not CBS
Clearly where Seth McFarlane got a lot of his ideas
he hasn’t had an original idea in his life
I hope one day you'll talk about the many versions of the tick that have been on TV.
Good topic for a vid for sure.
I didn't realize RJ Burger was considered forgetten. I vividly remember watching that with my friends. I especially recall the one where Weezer shows up out of nowhere
it isn’t, he has been filling his lists with fluff for a while
Every time I hear "but the episodes are on CZcams" on your forgotten TV shows videos. It makes me breathe a sigh of relief cause they aren't lost media, tho some shows got cancelled, we can at least still watch it here on CZcams. I watched some of the shows your recommended from your previous videos here on CZcams. I wasn't even born when most of them got shown on air, I still find them fun and entertaining to watch today. Thanks for this wonderful and great forgotten show video Cecil.
"I require pudding." :)
There is no rain we can't make this a catchphrase 30 years later.
@@scottzilla1979 Also not a bad band name.
Sounds like something the rawr girls of the early 2000’s would say to sound quirky and different.
Dang, I never saw any of these quirky shows! Thanks.
A julie newmar doll you can do anything with...wowza wowza
I know plenty of stories where that plot could have ended very differently.
Wait, is that alien baby where Rogu from American Dad came from?
An Orangutan among humans? Anyone else thinking of the Librarian?
...If you're cool, you got that reference.
Ook.
He was more civil than ridcully.
I am definitely not cool...but still get the reference.... Ook
Only thing pops in my head is the damned gorilla type things in metro, called librarians.
I remember Aliens in the Family! I love Julie Newmar, so I gotta see at least some of that show.
I was expecting Herman's Head or Dream On, but some of these make those look positively normal!
Especially Rabbits. Bloody hell.
"i require pudding"
nice fail 😂
the hard times of RJ berger was literally my favorite show at the time it was on.
Agree with your summary statement at the end. That was a lot of weird.
So much to like about the sentence "The reverend in Theodore Rex," combined with a picture of a dinosaur and Whoopi
I'm absolutely obsessed with your 'forgotten' series, still the best thing on CZcams
Thank you for the videos Cecil. I love your content and appreciate all the hard work 😊
OMG I saw Aliens in the family growing up and, it was gone so fast, older me assumed it was a fever dream 😂
I try to explain "Aliens in the Family" but no one remembers it. All I remembered to describe it was "I require pudding."
A very interesting & very good new video, Cecil. of five forgotten weird tv sitcoms. Alien in the Family & Mr. Smith. I definitely want to watch. :)
This reminded me of an old weird kids show called Mc Duff if I recall correctly. It was about a talking dog that would help a veterinarian owner get out of problems. You may want to consider mentioning this one and other ones like Monster Squad, Space Academy, The Ghostbusters and Sigmund and the sea monsters( That barking lobster was more than my son could handle!😂)
Interesting thing about The Rabbits? The laugh track only happens whenever anyone asks about time. It's made a lot of people suspect the story is set in purgatory, or even Hell.
I have to say, I've never heard of any of these. And I grew up in the 80-90s. Some many shows comes and go or just don't look appealing when they come out. Some shows I do remember that didn't last long:
Street Hawk- Knightrider on a motorcycle
The Wizard- Midget tool maker who is a genius and fights crime
Whiz Kids- Early 80s show I barely remember
Misfits of Science- The dad for ALF, Monica from Friends and the Predator in the same TV show.
The Orangutan show seems like something the Simpson family would watch
Yes. That’s a lot of weird… more please!
strange that Jennifer Slept Here wasn't on this video list... it was a Weird series.
1:28 it was NBC Cecil.
I always remember Alien's in the Family because I first aired when I had chicken Pox for the second time.
Great video! Thanks for giving us new shows!
Rabbits looks like a biting commentary on sitcom tropes that was just a bit too ahead of its time.
That's David Lynch's filmography in a nutshell.
That Aliens with the Family is wired, but damn! Those animatronics are impressive to look at! The way they move look so realistic, it's scary lol it's a shame you don't see awesome shit like this anymore. If this sitcom was an animated show, it probably would have done a lot better.
Hooray!!! Another great video!!!
Another great video - and damn I have heard of none of these. Nice job 👍
Aliens in the Family is one of those shows I always think about when nothing else is going on. I caught it when it was airing.
A tv show about Human Rabbits?! Now I’ve seen everything! Lol 🤣. It looks so weird that it possibly could have been TOO ahead of its time?! 🤔. Any mention of Julie Newman though, gets you an extra point in my book! 😊❤️
I caught the couple of episodes of Aliens in the Family they ran on TGIF originally and still think about it occasionally. So strange, but I'd have watched it every week.
"Not the Momma!" T-shirt's were a staple of trailer parks across the country.
I've already forgotten what babies say in "Aliens in the Family"
Incredibly uncatchy catchphrase
@@lakrids-pibeI guess pudding isn't required after all lol
The "Not the Daddy" t-shirts had "Thank God" on the back.
As a kid i watched my living doll loved it , missed it when it was cancelled
When I read "weird sitcoms", I immediately think of The Adventures of Pete & Pete.
should have been on here over an obscure vanity project by a failing hasbeen director
I've been trying to figure out what Aliens is the Family was for decades because I have vague memory of it but could never find it because 3rd Rock from Sun comes up when you google "90s sitcom about aliens"
Good thing you already covered Whoops! :)
My main takeaway from this video is the earth shattering realization that Charlene Sinclair was a dude.
At least in the suit.
With so many shows getting a remake, Aliens in the family and Mr. Smith deserves it👍
Aliens in Mr Smith's family?
@@mattyt1961…androids from outer space made to look like humans that fall in love with a single dad and his kids?
@@bostonrailfan2427 plot twist in season 2.. the androids from outer space are flesh and blood aliens and the humans are the androids... oh the drama
@@mattyt1961 on an alternate Earth?
@@bostonrailfan2427 🤔in a Truman Show style set up too? or is that a step too far
You unlocked a memory with Aliens in the family! I remember liking it a lot and getting sad when it stopped playing on TV!
This is why we are friends lol
Surprise "Madame's Place" wasn't included. another weird sitcom with an a puppet main character.
Great job as always on this video, Cecil. All new information to me, which I always find interesting.
Love this series so sending money
Rabbits is brilliant. Every line every burst of laughter are out of order and you have to try and assemble the piece in some kind of logical manner. Amazing stuff.
3rd Rock From The Sun aired on NBC.
Never saw these strange sitcoms. You learn something new every day! Rabbits was existentialist suspense, a forerunner of Twin Peaks. Whatever happened to shows that attacked The Man? TP sided with the Feds in its content.
Did you ever mention Danger 5?
To be fair I have no idea what category it would fit into. But it's amazing.
Admittedly, season 2 gets weird...
Such an amazing show! Best described as a live action Team America but way smarter and funnier. S1 and S2 are almost different shows. Well, except for Johnny Hitler!
Just listing a few episodes should sell anyone on the show: Rommel makes a tank out of solid gold, Nazi dinosaurs, mecha battles done Power Rangers style, Hitler goes to highschool, etc.
The special effects are miniatures that look worse than the worst of Doctor Who. On purpose.
Oh, and their commanding officer is a humanoid eagle for no reason whatsoever.
I discovered it online, bought the dvds instantly and the blurays just a few weeks ago.
Makes Wellington Paranormal (another amazing show) look positively sane.
Today's a good day! Keep these going!
I’m glad someone else knows AitF. I thought it was a fever dream when I was a kid and had a hell of a time finding it on the internet years ago. I must’ve caught it during its run, because I remember it being on TV at night back in ‘96.
"Mr. Smith"'s voice was supplied by co-creator Ed. Weinberger (before "The Cosby Show").
And after "Taxi".
3:24 "I don't want to live on this planet anymore."
I saw Aliens in the Family when it first aired! I remember looking forward to seeing more and then BOOM cancelled. Never knew they actually aired the rest of the series
Yeah, networks have a tendency to bury stuff that underperforms and usually will "burn them off" by airing them months later at random times.
Holy shit, I thought I was dreaming Aliens in the Family, I remember seeing this when I was younger, it was too weird to never leave my mind. I believe it was in reruns when I saw it.
This was this extremely brief period in the mid 2000s-early 2010s were MTV was doing these extremely weird sitcoms. There's a couple of them worth checking out. Idk if you have talked about it, but I'd love for you to cover My Life as Liz in one of these future videos. A super weird and funny mokumentary-style sitcom set in a high school that ran for 2 seasons on MTV from around the same time as RJ Berger. I still think about that show every so often.
I actually remember really enjoing Aliens in the Family and I was disappointed when it was immediately canceled.
8:30 never seen the show but that clip was to funny 😂
I really wish all these shows got a dvd release
I remember the advertisements for Mr. Smith, but even 7 year old me was like, "No.".
I watched that Alien show live! I had forgotten about it. Real weird.
"It would be _so beauty-full_ if you three guys dressed up as rabbits and played like you were in a sitcom in my backyard at night."
What was happening in the 50s and 60s, and their love for supernatural sitcoms? There was a Martian, genie, and a witch.
Don't forget two oddball monster families.
I have vague memories of Mr. Smith, like I saw ads for it or something, but I don't think I ever watched it. It really gives off Sid & Marty Krofft vibes, which is probably not what an 80s sitcom should have done.
You mean I'm not the only one that remembers Aliens in the Family?
Could I be wrong in thinking that Living Doll might have inspired The Stepford Wives as a societal invert? If this was 1965, Ira Levin's novel is 1972 and the film was 1975. Seems like more than a coincidence..
"Rabbits" is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen...even the clips here freaked me out
"Attention, beast; I require pudding!" XD
I require pudding… that needs to be on t shirts across the country!
There was a British version of Aliens in the Family, too. I remember seeing it on TV as a kid.
That baby just destroyed a Mamiya RZ67! Haha.
Totally forgot about RG Berger! Used to watch it all the time when it was the new show on MTV.
I can't believe what pile you find all these strange, hidden gems. I already knew about Rabbits, ofcourse, but wasn't aware that Lynch saw it as a sitcom.
