Building Cattle Pens - Part 1

- We are finally getting started building our #cattleworkingfacility. We have been working our cows in an old #catchlot for some time now, and are finally upgrading. We added on to the back of Eric's compost barn so our facility will have a roof over it. This will allow us to improve our herd management drastically. We will be able to #workcows and calves as needed, artificially inseminate, have a covered pen for sick cows/calves or calving momma cows, better place for feeding along with other things.
We are building all of the lanes and pens out of metal and will be welding everything together. We are using a 6 panel metal with a nearly 3" top brace. We will have various pens, lanes and catch areas to navigate the cattle in and around the barn. We plan to build a bud box system leading into a 35' lane that starts as a double lane and reduces down to a single. In this lane, we will have a set of scales so we can weigh any animal that comes through the lane. At the end of the lane we will be working our cattle in an Arrowquip Q-Catch 87 series squeeze chute.
We are pretty excited to be starting this project. I have never done much welding so I am looking forward to learning that as well. Eric has a Miller welder that will be getting a lot of use over the next several weeks. We have a general design setup, but i'm sure there will be plenty of modifications along the way.
I weld cars for a living but come from farming stock - a pal asked me to go weld feed-barriers & some handling stuff, so I did . I chucked my little Yeswelder 220v machine into the back of the jeep - ran it off a long extension lead, big pack of 6013 rods, welded everything that needed welding without so much as a hiccup. That welders 65 quid off Amazon.
Just in case buying/renting the hugely expensive welder is what is putting you off doing upgrades to your handling system. €65 machine rocks this stuff out - where there's a will, there's a way.
Thanks for the tip!
Awesome video!!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. We’ll have more videos of this project coming soon as we get more done.
Excellent video. Starting to rebuild our corrals and always looking for easy directions/instructions and this has been the best ones yet. Great channel.
Thank you! We've studied it and studied it. I'm sure there are things we are missing or things we will wish we had done differently but so far we are pleased with it. Ready to get this project complete!
I'm ⁰
Enjoy your content Ben!
Thank you I appreciate it! We had to put the cattle pen project on hold. Took a while for our squeeze chute to come in. We finally got it so we are hoping to get started back on this project soon.
Rather than channel lock pliers, I use an HF Locking Oil Filter Wrench, SKU 63696, 66568 to secure rod or pipe for welding. Works great.
Thanks for the tip!
Looks good 👍
Thanks! We are working on the bud box right now. Should have that done and video up soon.
Great job bro!!!!
Thanks! We are running behind working on it but hopefully soon we will have another phase done.
Excellent!
Thanks!
Nice video 👍👍 found this I’m looking for ideas for some new facilities I’m building
Thanks! We had a delay in our project. Ordered a squeeze chute, and it took a while to come in. We finally got it so hopefully we'll be back working on this project soon.
Where did you get your stuff from and what size post
It came from a place called CBI Pipe and Supply. It's in Guthrie, Oklahoma. We got 6 bar panels. If I had it to do over i'd probably get 7 (if they offer that). We also got pieces of 2 3/8" pipe that I believe is 40' long. We are cutting it to length for post to weld panels against. We also bout some 3" 9' posts that we are using to hang gates on.
What type of welding rod did y’all use?
We used Lincoln Excalibur 1/8” 7018 and 6011 rods.
@@FarmerHunt thanks! Welding basically the same kinda cattle pens and tried 7018 today and it welds pretty good!
