  • Two back to back feature length films on Joes Junction!
In this video, myself, along with Washington District Railfan spent a few days in the greater Bluefield, West Virginia area shooting trains and exploring some of the lesser shot branch lines. While our main focus was on the Pocahontas District, aka, 'The Pokey', as well as the N&W between Bluefield and Roanoke, we did some exploring further southwest along some of the coal branches. The main one we wanted to, and did end catch a couple of trains on, was the 'Big Creek' Branch, which still sported a handful of CPL signals between Richlands and Vansant. Since we were in the area in March of 2020 however, the branch has been idled due to the downturn of coal traffic throughout this year.
Inbetween all the action on the rails, we managed to do quite a bit of exploring around some of the abandoned and disused branches of both the N&W and even the mothballed Virginian 'PD' district, which runs between Princeton and Deepwater, WV. Sadly, I didn't shoot any footage of these, but what we ended up shooting on the mainlines and branches was more than enough to fill this feature length video with action from start to finish!
While coal traffic is definitely on the downturn, it was nice to capture as much action as we did on this trip, and I definitely would like to plan another trip to the area and find a few other branches to explore and hopefully catch some action on!

Very neat! I enjoy rural and coal mining areas of railroading especially within Appalachia. The mountains, countryside and small-town atmosphere is very breathtaking. Keep up the good work!

I used to visit the Pocahontas Dist. once a year in the fall. Between Obama’s War on Coal decimating traffic, and the loss of the old N&W CPL signals, I’ve given up going anymore. Makes me sad to see all the ghost towns and lack of trains now.

@@JoesJunction I heard that most of the N&Ws coal reserves are gone. Any truth to that? I thought they had a lot more coal.

I heard that much of the former N&W's coal reserves is gone. What a shame, I thought they had much more coal.

Do they run any trains through War, West Virginia or Welch anymore?
