  • Wrigley Field was originally built for the short-lived Federal League franchise known as the Chicago Whales. The ill-fated league folded a year later, leaving the park's owner, Charles Weegham, searching for a new team. The Cubs were playing across town and easily persuaded to make the state-of the art ballpark their new home. The Chicago Cubs played their first game at the park on April 20, 1916. Later, chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Junior bought the Cubs and changed the ballpark’s name to Wrigley Field. The ballpark, known as “the friendly confines,” remains one of baseball's most iconic ballparks and for 100 years has been the only home of the Chicago Cubs.

I LOVE that TORCO sign on SHEFFIELD. There used to be a TORCO sign on SOUTH MICHIGAN AVENUE, over looking GRANT PARK.

Interesting that their 101st season in Wrigley (and their 100 year anniversary there) was the first win in Wrigley.

Interesting if it was true, but it isn't. Wrigley Field wasn't Wrigley Field until 1926.

Im looking for footage of 1934 Wrigley field, specifically Jim Londos vs Ed Lewis from September that year

When are they going to tear down this place? The linemakers won't give us an overnight over-under because of the wind.

And please explain how a new ball park will effect the wind? Proximity to Lake Michigan and the fact Chicago sits high above sea level explain the wind influence, not the shape of the ball park.

The park used by the White Sox doesn't have this problem.

Tom Dockery - It doesn't have a team in it, either. And when it did, they tried to rig the World Series and screwed up the payment arrangements, too.

That's why we should destroy a landmark? Lines makers?
Shut the hell up, tom foolery.

One of the worst ballparks in MLB.
      Tom, quit while you're behind.
