Karjala has been stolen from the Finns as much as Eastern Borderlands from Poland. Karjala is the heart of Finnish culture (i.e. Kalevala) and has nothing to do with russia apart from troublesome neighbourhood.
Korela became a part of Novgorod kingdom, albeit in many ways autonomous, much earlier than Finns existed as a proper nation or even any kind of noticable kingdom. In 12th century AD. For better or for worse, Karjala has very many things to do with RUS princedoms, Russian empire, USSR and now Russian Federation.

karelia has always been multicultural, it never "belonged" only to karelians and finns.
