Ultimately the best workout is going to be the one you'll regularly do. Beat Saber brings me much joy so I'm going to keep playing. If you're a Beat Saber player who goes for top scores, you'll know that the scoring mechanism favors large, sweeping motions, not the choppy motions you're talking about. And once you're playing on Expert Plus the range of motion is very large, so if you're an expert plus Beat Saber player and maximizing for score you will absolutely be getting an amazing workout.

As you're probably aware, there is a large aftermarket for custom beat sabre maps. There is a specific category for "fitness" and that is intense and uses a much more extensive range of motion than many of the other maps. It's quite a robust workout.

💯 I've been working out pretty regularly for 16 years then suddenly got completely bored. I started using Supernatural 11 days ago and I am hooked! I've always been the type that preferred playing sports over organized exercising, but that is just not possible with my career anymore and this has been a perfect solution. I don't care how tired or sore I am, I come home every day looking forward to doing Supernatural. And even if I tell myself I'm only going to do 20 minutes, I end up doing an hour, even an hour and a half. It's not only great for someone who is competitive, but for someone who really wants a fun workout. And I also have to say that for us older females, it is a great way to tone your arms. If you do it right, and follow the form that they want you to, in terms of body movements, it is an amazing workout!

Something I wish he'd have been able to include in his evaluation of custom songs, where the mapping is much smoother and generally superior to the OSTs, allowing for faster note speed and more notes per second. Once you get in the 8+ star range, it's certainly an intense workout due to jumps in notes (ex: upper left to lower right swings) and the sheer speed of streams. That's not even taking into account the custom songs made expressly for fitness, as another commenter already noted. Some good examples of strenuous songs: Camellia - Night Raid With A Dragon (Fvrwvrd Remix) Expert+ or PARANOID MIRAGE | Kobaryo | Expert+

Supernatural is so much more than just some regular VR fitness app. I get a lot of spirited motivation from the coaches/trainers and they take you through a progression increasing your fitness challenges as you go. The carefully curate your preferences according to your selections. The coaches bring humour and personality to each workout and sometimes they even do theatrical stuff to keep it fun and interesting. I get a good laugh out of it. The progression of music, the diversity of movement presented with each successive workout as it learns which music/choices you favor most, it suits the whole package to YOU. Nothing can replace it! I think we made need to think more about the term "workout".
    There are aerobic workouts.
    There are strength workouts.
    There are endurance workouts.
Perhaps we should also be talking about the importance of workouts focused building coordination/developing/maintaining the musculo-nervous system.
Movement is as important in exercising the brain as it is the musculoskeletal complex.
Thus, perhaps rhythm games are as important for what they can exercise as "fitness-focused" games.
Perhaps we can get a rhythm game that has been designed specifically with developing cognitive/brain-muscle health.

I think people are spectacularly bad at knowing what their body is actually doing when they have the headset on. Most of the people I talk to who think they are getting a great workout on Beatsaber tell me they use large arm movements when making the cuts. But when I watch them play, they don't. I think feeling like you are doing something is a lot different than actually doing it, you know? Supernatural places the targets in locations that force you to move more, and like the video said constantly encourages you to use a particular form while playing. Can you use that same form while playing Beatsaber? Of course. But not on expert mode or higher. There are just too many symbols. You have to use a lot more wrist to hit those. And even on hard, using larger, shoulder-driven movements will not yield the same workout results due to target placement.
I'm talking un-modded Beatsaber, of course, which is the only Beatsaber most people will have on the Quest 2.
Anyway, I'd recommend if you feel like you are getting amazing workout on Beatsaber to record yourself playing and see what your body is actually doing. You'll probably be surprised.

I have to play Beats on Expert+ for at least an hour to feel my body temp rise a little. I play Low intensity in Supernatural, and am completely drenched after 10 minutes. I don’t even get that going hardcore at the gym. I quit my gym membership after my Supernatual trial. No joke.

I do only play in the Quest 2 so the only thing I have to complain about is Beat saber really needs more songs. And Supernatural needs the option to turn the coach voice off, hehe

We just got Oculus 2, my husband and I each got one. He purchased Beat Saber, I purchased Supernatural. The best one is the one that makes you WANT to do it, and I want to do Supernatural. I find it fun, I find the locations beautiful and fascinating, and I have a favorite trainer I gravitate towards. I'm 49 years old, diabetic, have frozen shoulder (which makes Supernatural extremely difficult for me, but I still love it) and not too long ago finished chemo. I'm pretty unhealthy, in other words. I am stunned I get home and want to do Supernatural. I've graduated in a relatively short amount of time from 10 minutes to 30 minutes a day. My husband loves beat Saber. He's in much better shape than I am, and he considers it his workout.

I find this kinda bullsh*t. BeatSaber can be played both casually or intensively. If you want to burn more cal, then you should choose a song where the blocks distance is huge, and with walls. Some songs require you so skip left and right, while some songs require you to duck and stand quickly, and some songs have a huge block spacing which require you to literally swing both your arms. You can’t get the most out from it if you decided to play songs where walls are minimal, and with tightly packed blocks.

I play both but played Best Saber first. Beat Saber never struck me as a work out but more as a game that tried to test your dexterity and skill. It struck me as a challenge but not physically and more as a Star Wars Light Saber version of Guitar Hero. I still play it, but more for how fun it is to try and move up in the campaign. I literally use it as a cool down workout to Supernatural.
I've been playing Supernatural for a month and a half with a 50/50 mix of boxing and the flow batons. Hands down, Supernatural is the better workout for me. From the get go (literally the tutorial onwards) the coaches are constantly mentioning maintaining form and keeping your arms straight while making those large sweeping movements. They also concentrate on proper posture and convey a general sense of motivation geared towards getting in shape along with a constant physical and mental improvement fitness wise. They also have several muscle groups and areas of the body they focus on depending on the workout. The same goes for the boxing videos. The addition of squats and lunges completely ups the workout and intensity level of Supernatural when doing the flow batons and with boxing there are constant slips and dips, so by the time you're done with a workout you're drenched in sweat (dips, squats, lunges and slips really make your quads and hammies work hard).
I, like you, enjoy both but I just see Supernatural as the one I use for high intensity cardio mixed with coaching and fun while Bear Saber is my low intensity cool down cardio workout or sometimes I just play it to have fun outside of a workout session. I completely agree with your assessment. I'm not challenging anyone who has had a different experience or has a different opinion than me. To each his own. For me, Supernatural is definitely not a Beat Saber knock off. They both occupy a different VR space in my opinion and I'm glad they both exist!

You can play Beat Saber veeeery differently. If you just aim to hit the nodes, you can do - even on Expert+ - with little movement. But the fun is the movement. Try to dance along with the song. Especially on E+ I get a hellish workout out of it. So what you're saying basically is statistics for N=1 which is you. Sorry.

I’m not even going to read the comments because I’m sure you’ll get a variety of different opinions. As a disabled person, I’m going to say I still try to work out daily. I’ve done both BSab & SN for more than a year & yes I pay the subscription for SN. I love them both, but like you said, I do get a better cardio workout w/SN than w/BSab.
The downside w/SN is I can’t do the lunges & squats due to the multiple surgeries I’ve had from my cancer. I wish SN would allow us to turn off the triangles coming at us, bc if we can’t use them for their purpose, they are super annoying. Also, I wish I could turn off the coaches voice throughout my workout. It’s fine for the first time you are doing one, but if you like the workout & want to come back to it… we’ll I’d rather just hear the music while I’m working out. In BSab we ARE able to turn off bombs, walls etc so that’s a great feature! Some people can’t candle the motion of the triangles either in SN. I DO love the boxing with SN better than any other app! I get the best cardio with it, but I must say, they are making it pretty hard on a few, where like w/BSab you don’t get the full ROM due to the speed of the targets coming at you, therefore hindering your workout HR.
All in all they are both fun & if someone doesn’t want to pay to workout, then BSab is better than nothing… especially if they really put full arm ROM into their swings. Thx for your video.

While I definitely agree supernatural gives more of a workout than beat saber does, I feel like, depending on the song beat saber can be considered a workout. If you just play the base game, then no it’s not a workout. If you get custom songs and find songs tailored to a workout, then I think in some cases it’s equal to supernatural. I have many different songs for beat saber tailored to a workout, making me do squats, lunges and more. I also use super natural as well. Both are really good.

  • @claricelee1079
    @claricelee1079 Před 8 měsíci

I have both Beat Saber and Supernatural. Beat Saber is fun, but for a workout, I prefer Supernatural.
Many Beat Saber veterans claim that you can get a solid workout at expert or expert+ difficulty. However, Beat Saber has too heavy a cognitive load. Supernatural offers much clearer indications of the direction and angle at which you should hit the targets. You can see this clearly when the targets are still far away, allowing you to plan a better flow of motion and exert your full power. In Beat Saber, the cubes at most expert and expert+ levels are tricky; they change directions as they approach you, often not revealing their true directions until they are very close. I feel my mind heavily focusing on cubes but not on my body and muscles. With no time to plan ahead, this results in sweeping motions with speed but not enough power.
Other reasons I feel Supernatural is better for workouts include: First, Beat Saber has too many cubes in positions with awkward directions, requiring you to use your arm and wrist to whip the targets, which doesn't engage other parts of your body. Second, expert and expert+ levels are not for everyone. Those who claim to advance to expert or expert+ easily are either still young and thus super energetic and agile with fast responses, or they are gifted enough to do it even at an older age. If you're the one, you should be grateful instead of shamming people who cannot do expert or expert+! I'm 43 and can only handle an average of 3 to 4 targets per second, placing me between hard and expert difficulty in Beat Saber. Anything more difficult than that leads to frustration. However, in Supernatural, I can achieve medium and high intensity with Diamond (the highest score tier), which is easier but still provides excellent workout results because it targets your full body muscle groups. Third, Supernatural offers boxing, which demands more from the core and footwork if done correctly. This provides a more balanced workout if added to your routine. Fourth, Supernatural has coaches, filmed with real person in warm up and cool down sessions for all workout lists. While many fans don’t care about the coaches and turn off their voices during songs, I like them. They feel like companions during the workout, even if they say silly things and I don’t take their advice seriously. They makes me feel welcomed to workout every day. With Beat Saber, it feels like you're alone in a cold, flashy cyberspace.
If you just want to choose one and your primary focus is fitness, choose Supernatural. If you want coolness and fun, and fitness is a bonus but not a necessity, go ahead with Beat Saber.

I would log into both apps every day, but if I "play" Supernatural before Beat Saber, I will not play Beat Saber. I usually play Beat Saber as a warm-up to Supernatural, and proceed to get my ass handed to me. Supernatural is most definitely more of a workout, even in a "Quick Hits" "light intensity" session. I mostly play Beat Saber just for fun, and it definitely delivers. This is only my opinion, of course. ☺

I play Beat Saber the way you say to play Supernatural, moving from the shoulder and trying to put my whole body into it. I’m not playing for the score, and yes, I use the ‘no fail’ option. I don’t like the ‘drum playing’ moves; they are not the way a sword moves. ( I have friends who do HEMA, so my initial interest was mimicking realistic sword swings).
Personally, I find the voiceover ‘encouragements’ in Supernatural to be very annoying. So much so that they make me want to just quit (i have the same problem in a live fitness class. Don’t distract me!)
Anyway, I just wanted to say that just as you can play Supernatural without taking real advantage of its training function, you can also play Beat Saber for the workout, and not as a game.

Expert+ and modded play along with competitive play (and levels created for fitness) completely outmatch the basic expert/hard player like yourself. large sweeping movements are recommended for competitive play and--though wrists are used a lot-- you need to use your arms a lot as well.

But dude, you have to give custom songs a chance. For me, custom songs changed BS from a a rhythm game to an actual cardio session. Depending on the song layout (further out boxes), playing on only hard or sometimes even expert so you can focus on and have time to swing from the shoulder rather than the elbows or wrists, my HR readily getting into the 120-140bpm range, I find a pretty good workout can be had (enough that I can feel my shoulders getting a bit overused and I need actual recovery days). @@FitProVR So a little after my comment I ended up trying Supernatural. Didn't realize it wasn't available on Steam so it finally pushed me into getting a Quest 2 for my VR workouts, which I was already looking into before since it's not tethered and I didn't care for getting super sweaty in my PCVR headset. And my already purchased Steam VR games (BS, Synth Riders) are still playable with Airlink. I love it. The H intensity anyway. The L and M levels I just use for warmups. My HR readings comparing BS and SN are actually opposite from yours though which I find interesting. I think the rapid change in directions in BS (song dependent of course) make me have to swing faster than SN (I like to swing hard, imagining it's a sword, and with more shoulders). Have you tried swinging BS lightsabers more like you do the SN bats? I like them both, in different ways though. I think selecting what songs to play make BS more fun and SN more cardio with motivational voiceovers so I end up using them both in my VR cardio workouts now. Wish I could play more but rest days and all. Lol.

I love beat sabre...tried supernatural and it is not nearly as fun. Supernatural has to much talking and the fun is just missing. I personally find the games being called fitness training are just beat sabre repurposed and lacks the fun that beat sabre has making you want to go for more. Two songs on hard and I need a break because I am sweating, my muscles feel it, and my heart rate is up there...I am almost fifty. The only real difference is beat sabre doesn't have a trainer telling you to keep you muscles tight. You have to learn not to extend your arms if you want to stand a chance on not failing past hard. I think he is getting some sort of sponsorship for supernatural. Also, as you get used to the songs, you start moving your body even more and dancing along at the same time. Beat sabre for the win...hands down.

Ok but for beat saber there is "the crab stance" which I use a lot and when you play at any higher level (through custom songs most likely) it makes things like higher accuracy and better scores considerably easier, it also does work out your shoulders, biceps, and few other muscles/joints that the lower difficulty songs don't even expect you to use. The only reason I can say any of this with confidence is because of my experience with the game, I know what muscles and joints are almost always sore after playing half an hour of speed or tech maps. The reason I think it was showing as less active physically is you simply aren't playing songs that are able to get your body moving enough for it to be a work out. And I do know that while your wrists and elbows are a big part of the movement as soon as you start getting to higher speeds you will feel your shoulders being worked and that can cause mild pain at first because you were trained to not give in to your movement in the shoulders, but once you start using them it makes a world of a difference.

I have both. I HATE to workout. I like Beat Saber a lot because I sweat my ass off and it doesn’t feel like a workout. It is a challenge game.
Supernatural feels like a workout but it is a love/hate relationship for me. I get a better overall body workout but it feels like a workout. I don’t care for the trainers taking through the songs but they help me to remember to breath throughout, I tend to hold my breath a lot. If they weren’t there it wouldn’t feel as much as a workout. Can I mute them?
I like songs I can sing with vs rhythm beat club music. I have bought a lot of songs in Beat Saber.
Supernatural has more leg/squat movements. I wish I could pick from a list of songs and make my own workout.
My 30 days are about up and I am buying the yearly membership.

I’ve lost 30 lbs in two months of beat saber. lol. It’s what you put into how you workout. Your age and your health. I don’t tuck my arms and I really swing my arms. lol. Maybe when I get bored I will try supernatural. Does look interesting.

I love beat saber and supernatural. However, I agree, Supernatural is definitely a program meant for working out and getting into shape, while beat saber is meant to just play and have fun. I use supernatural workouts for a half an hour almost every day during my work lunch breaks - yeah working at home for the win.
Then, in the evenings, for an hour to an hour and a half, depending on if I think I can handle it and need to burn off some steam, I play supernatural to wear myself out and have a good workout.
Then I switch to beat saber to "cool down" and give my body a break while still moving around so I don't stiffen up.
Then I go to play a few other games, like fruit ninja to just goof off. Or I play fishing and card games.

Then I must play beat sabre wrong...because I get way more so winded and sore muscles and increased heart rate than I did on supernatural...probably because I just get so into beat sabre and supernatural was meh...it didn't get me excited.

  • @saiyan_princestudios9790

Beat super wins on price alone. F that subscription model. I know it’s not that bad compared to a gym, but a gym also has weights and other stuff too.
I don’t even like planet fitness… but bc the price is about the same it’s a good comparison. You get weights, can go to any location for the $20 sub, can get a tan if you are into that, and can get a water massage too.
It’s a shame too bc many of us would gladly pay a lot of money just to own it outright.

Just joined the VR world, just because I wanted to start working out and HAVE FUN. I tried Supernatural and I LOVE IT. The following day all my muscles were aching! It's a whole body workout and exactly what I need. As you said, with Beat Saber you move much less, ypu mostly have to be quick, also I don't like the fact that if you "fail" while playing it stops (not sure if that can be turned off) but that doesn't happen in Supernatural, the let you finish your song/session no matter how you're going.
So for me, Supernatural > Beat Saber

Thank you for your video. I am 59 yrs old got me an Oculus Queet 2 for Xmas and have the Beat Saver and Supernatural. I like both but with the workouts of Supernatural and super music it's greater than Beat Saver. I feel work all my muscles and trully break a sweat. I don't know about loosing weight yet but sure I feel a little muscular tone and energetic since I use Supernatural. I highly recommended to people of my age, I love it. ❤

If you actually play Beat Saber, then you will see maps that have you truly reaching for blocks. My arms and legs are killing me everyday I play. I play hard/expert and I will play until I am able to complete the round. In order to get a good score in the game then you need to play from 100 degrees to hit the block and finish to 60 degrees....not the little wrist movements you are speaking about. I think Supernatural is a great workout for those who like it. I tried it and I didn't find myself lost in it and completely addicted like I am with Beat Saber. So, for me, Beat Saber is a better workout. 1 to 2 hours a day and I'm losing a ton of weight and truly enjoying myself. I'm only a month in and already people are noticing a difference.

If you're playing with no fail on, then you should be dancing and not giving a care to whether you're actually hitting a block or not then. I agree that pro players only use their wrists and that's a very specific way to play. If you're playing no fail in Beat Saber, you better be dancing, moving, swinging those arms around, dramatically dodging walls, really getting low when going underneath horizontal walls, etc. as you're just a shmuck in your living room. I actually play with a lot of shoulder motion, with the fail option on and with practice and maybe changing that settings of bringing the blocks closer, changing your floor height, etc. you would realize that you are not limited at expert mode at all. I admit at this point in time having only been playing for maybe three months that maybe it is only doable up to expert and then maybe expert + does start to really limit that range of motion but from other comments, it seems like it may not. I really am too uncoordinated to just play with my wrists and use fancy grips. Scoring is based on arm movement in rather large motions. I think it's swing angle before cut, 100 degrees ideally, after, 60 degrees, and then something about centrality. I very much respect your credentials (as in wow, you know your stuff) and your numbers (as in workout comparisons, not scores) but please realize that the way you play Beat Saber is not going to be a workout.

    • @FitProVR
      @FitProVR  Před rokem

There’s no standardized way to move in this game so unless there are tutorials form the company, all are valid. You could dance while bagging groceries, doesn’t mean bagging groceries is a workout, it means dancing is.

Just for completitions sake I would like to point out that it depends a lot on what song you play on beat saber. I usually burn 750 kcal/h on average and I play songs with 9-12 nodes per second but I also get the point that SN is a game designed for fitness.
