What if you could get that chocolate cake kick from eating a plate of beans? Taste is one of our most primal senses, intimately linked to pleasure and enjoyment, yet it is also one of the least understood. Horizon sets out to uncover what the newly emerging science of taste could do for us. Because if we can understand what happens in our brains from the moment food hits our tongues, we may find a way to make it easy to eat healthily.

When I started my cooking journey,
I felt certain spices would go well with certain vegetables intuitively, and we use lots of different spices in Indian cooking, sometimes more than what’s required really.
Also I realised how excessive use of onion, ginger and garlic in every single Indian recipe overpowers the actual taste of vegetables and slowly numbs the taste buds depriving us of tasting the milder more nuanced underlying flavours of several dishes.
I don’t think I am super taster, but after this video I am sure I have decent amount of taste buds and they help me with cooking. My family members tell me they could taste a lot more flavours in my cooking than general cooking and it gives me much happiness.
The only downside is, I myself get easily overwhelmed by 🌶 chiilies, masala, sweet, salty and bitter is a nightmare, even if someone has used only an average amount.
But on the positive note, having a sensitive taste & smell helps me detect unclean or potentially unhealthy food immediately, helps avoid stomach issues later.
Parents too me to a Dr when I was a kid, because I hated everything. He told them if i got hungry enough, I would eat what was on my plate. The DR was wrong. I got so skinny someone called CPS. Turns out I'm a super taster. Kind of sucks sometimes. LOL

I have a very sensitive sense of smell...things like gas, I have smelled gas leaks when no one else can smell anything...Sure enough, when the gasman came out, he said ''yes, there is a very slight leak''.....Smells are almost unbearable at times...
I don't like alcohol or bitterveg...Maybe I am a supertaster? Sprouts are not nice, and I can't bear chillis...love the look of them, but even mildest ones burn.

No one that knows me would characterize me as a picky eater, but there are a handful of flavors that I haven’t been to “acquire” nor appreciate.
I’m particular, the way that sprouts taste is something that I may never learn to appreciate, as it is far too unpleasant for my palette.
But one thing that I cannot tolerate is meat that tastes “gamey.” Something about it makes me far too nauseated, leaving me susceptible to vomiting…

I think gas is sent-less but they add a nasty chemical to it to make it smell.

My daughter from the moment she experienced the taste of meat refused it. She will only eat fruits, veggies and bread. She is about to be 4 now and is most certainly a vegetarian by choice. I wonder how her buds would stake up in this study. Interesting stuff!
That was how I was growing up! Now I’m vegan and much happier!
too many times children are said to be picky eaters only to find out later in life it was bad cooking. but the eating lifestyle has already been fixed during the critical age

I really dislike bitter and can pick it up easily - but I do enjoy really spicy food. Though the latter has been a long process.

I like mildly spicy (I didn't even like black pepper until my late teens), really don't like sweet... sour IS SO SOUR, same with bitter. I loooove umami/savory, and normal levels of salt.
So, I think I'm somewhere in between? Can anyone else kinda "taste" smells?
My sense of smell is what's nuts. It's a blessing and a curse. I can smell spices, and gauge exactly what and how much to use without bothering to think about it. I can tell if something is off from a mile away, and notice smells others do not. I abhor cigarette smoke, and strong perfumes/colognes. The smell of Star Jasmine is nice... from 50ft away, any closer and I get a headache. It's a curse because my stomach is easily turned with gross smelling stuff (and ever since having my 1st child 2 yrs ago, I've retained the heightened "puke" reflex of morning sickness... yay).
No one cares, Miss Self Obsessed.
So this channel just abandoned now...that's a shame

I hadn't seen your comment, but just now suggested to someone that he /she vaporised some cannabis to make food flavours taste exquisite again.
Years ago I knew a man in his forties {he seemed ancient to me then} and he described how wonderful quite ordinary food tasted after he had partaken of cannabis..Probably Afghan hash in those days.

Well, whoever is responsible for those horrible MSG-overloaded ham (or "Canadian bacon", as McDonald's calls it) slices in the Egg McMuffin must have EXTREMELY WEAK taste buds. I always have to ask them to substitute regular bacon whenever I order that breakfast sandwich.

I’m a supertaster and sweet things I avoid. Alcohol is a no. And strangely some things are wayyyy too bitter but I like it. I kinda like cool/bitter/sour flavors. I also really like spice but it is quite overwhelming

IDK if i am a good taster, but i eat potato mostly.
i can't eat any green, they are too intense in smell and flavor,
and most of them are bitter like those deadly almonds.
I enjoy the bitterness of espresso but dislikes spicy food as I can't handle the burning sensation
afaik the burn of spicy food is actual pain, not taste
Lol most people can't handle burning from spicy food but it gives you a rush of dopamine when you eat it causing most people to continue with the torture.

as a supertaster a small amount of spice is painful, yet most people enjoy spicy food. Only explanation is that they find it not nearly as painful, because most wouldnt purposefully subject themselves to it. Especially kids and women

Being able to taste the bitterness is a matter of genetics, not a matter of whether it's there or not. You won't be able to cloak bitterness from people producing the proteins necessary to taste it.
