No one seems to have mentioned that you are essentially wet sanding with either of these sponges. Thats why it seems like magic but you can even see in the video that you dulled your wall after multiple cleanings in the same spot. If you are cleaning something that isnt hard enough to withstand the melamine foam you arent only cleaning the stuff off you are taking layers off of the thing you are cleaning and you could quickly end up sanding right through thin paint or enamel. Keep that in mind when using these
Yup and if you clean glossy surfaces with them then after dirt will stick to them easier. The melamine shouldn't be used on everything, its got a time and place.

I liked the video, but the title is a little unfair. 95% of consumers didn’t know about these sponges until Mr Clean made it known to the masses. Nothing wrong with that at all and it is a quality product. It’s not perfect because it does remove regular paint along with the undesired mark but much better than cleaning sprays I would have used previously. Let’s face it, every single good product out there is going to have a significantly cheaper off brand product that may or may not be good. In the grand scheme of things a normal person might buy $30 of these in a lifetime so it’s fair to give the people that work in these factories to make such things for us all a little love too..aka a decent wage.
What I did was just take some bee's wax and rub it onto the wall later
Not much, just a little, but it did the trick at a fraction of the price
I remember years ago when these things first came out. The sponges were waaaay more durable and you could get a lot more usage out of them. Now they fall apart immediately and you need to grab a new one. I’m so sick of the scammy quality decline creep tactic. So many brands and products start out great and then they get all greedy and everything goes to shit.
You are right Dawn dish Liquid would last in the water but not now , and bleach is not as good , I could go on and on.
@@reginaduncan3714 correct, they don't last as long. But that was at the expense of water quality and caused fish die-off. So they reformulated to be better for the environment. It's biodegradable ingredients that don't persist in the environment vs. Chemicals that cause irreparable damage to fresh and marine ecosystems. And since the diatoms (phytoplankton) in our oceans produces over 50% of the oxygen we breathe on earth, I'd much rather use a tiny bit more dish soap than not breathe half the time.

BASF makes and sells them much cheaper than Mr Clean, you could definitely get them even cheaper but. The BASF ones work for me
To be fair, Tyler had the heavy duty Magic Erasers. The regular Magic Erasers are the same as the generic, and they can’t hold up for one bathroom cleaning 😂
When I cleaned houses for a living, these sponges were a live saver when cleaning soap scum from bathtubs/showers and also cut through hard water on glass doors with ease. It doesn't matter the brand, the ones we got from the dollar store worked just as well as Mr. Clean.
@Kayla Brown Agree, and they polish stainless sinks well, and old porcelain tubs where the glaze has already been damaged, but have you ever found them to dull glass, or tile? Or new pristine porcelain? I'd be afraid to use them on something shiny and new myself. Seeing as you used them quite regularly on surfaces in different clients' homes, you'd be the person to ask! @@edwardkantowicz4707 I never noticed any dulling on the glass or tubs or shower walls. We didn't really use them for anything else though. We were instructed to never use them or even regular sponges on stainless steal. We used special cloths for polishing the steal surfaces.

Yep, they can remove spray paint and they can also remove finish on the surface because all these melamine sponges do is act like very fine abrasives. They contain very hard fibres, tiny ones, and it’s like using 3000+ grit sandpaper. They have their place for certain surfaces, ceramic and other hard smooth surfaces in particular, just don’t be surprised if your clean surface ends up with a different sheen to it.
I was just going to say that the sheen was dulled on the paint, but you nailed it. It can cause abrasive burns on skin if you use it to clean something off the kids' skin. That was a thing a while back with kids trying to scrub off the temp tattoos, ending up with a very bad scab.
They're around 4000 grit.
I am an auto detailer and use 1k-8k sandpaper very often. The magic eraser is definitely in the 8-10k range.
Well, that just means he needs to see how many sponges it will take to sharpen a knife

It's for consistency, I've seen too many comments of people saying the same thing.
If one can't hold up then the other is better (for durability) but the main reason he did this was to see if they do the same job and swapping out the sponges wouldn't give an inaccurate outcome.

As many have mentioned before, these Magic Erasers are just melamine sponges. They work so well at removing stuff from surfaces because they're essentially just really really fine sandpaper. You would get the same effect if you took really fine grit sanding block and wet-sanded something for a little while.
I would be interested in seeing them up against a regular wash cloth and dawn soap.
They would crush the soap & washcloth. Trust me... I know. Lol. The magic erasers are slightly abrasive so they can remove things a washcloth just can't. It's more like sanding rather than cleaning.
I used to clean with a lady before there were magic erasers and we used to get black heal marks off with white tennis shoe bottoms. Same principle.
Melamine sponges have been a thing for a very very long time. You actually got scammed with the .25c ones too. You can find those things for literally 1 penny each if you search around.

I ordered a thousand (literally 1,000) from wish for like 7 bucks a few years ago, yes it took like a month to get them, but, they work just as well as the no name in the video.
Also these will wreck many surfaces. They feel "soft" but they are very abrasive. Test somewhere unnoticeable first before going to town on something. There are actually only a handful of surfaces where these are really safe to use.
I was going to say these are just melamine foam and IF there is a difference I'd think MAYBE Mr. Clean added a tiny amount of cleanser but I don't even think that is the case.

I used to work in a factory where part of the job was cleaning ink off of the negatives for printing label. They were 3 foot cylinders that varied in diameter. Regardless, we used Mr. Clean magic erasers and whenever we got knockoffs we hated them. They never lasted as long. They didn't clean as fast (sometimes time was a constraint). If you're paying one fouth of the price, but using 4 times more of the product, plus wasting time crunching it into a ball or using more elbow grease, it's well worth the full priced, branded product imo
In an environment like that I can understand wanting the brand that lasts longer, but around the house no name will suffice fine
Fair enough but professional/commercial use is pretty different, people will pay 100% for 5% more performance just because you literally spend all day doing it. Someone at home might use one ten minutes a week

Yes! I worked as a housekeeper and tried several off brands of Magic Eraser and they all performed worse than the brand name. To me it's worth getting the real Magic Eraser.

I'd like to see a comparison between Mr. Clean magic erasers/generic ones and a scrub daddy on how well they clean stuff off surfaces. Scrub Daddy has a recycling program for their old sponges and I think would last longer than a single Mr. Clean or similar sponge.

It's called melamine foam sponge. It's all the same stuff, but the Mr clean has an outer coating probably to make it more longer lasting. I always throw the sponge away after use anyways, so the cheap disposable is best
Might be made of the same stuff, but then so is water and ice, or expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene, yet both have very different properties. Foams come in all kinds of different densities too, and these are no different. The named brand was clearly more dense, can tell just by looking at it. The outer surface may well be even denser to make it more robust, but saying they are all the same stuff does not mean they are all the same.

I'm old enough to remember that the magic eraser when it first came out is exactly the same as the "off brand" before they came out with those squiggly looking ones. I wouldn't be surprised if the "off brand" is the surplus of the old Mr clean erasers.

It may only be a minimal difference, but allowing the markers (or anything that goes on wet) to dry longer will make it more difficult to remove. Both tests should have been done with the same basic time allowed between marking the surface and using the sponge, even more so with some sort of mechanism that applies the same weight to the sponge/work. Seeing how many passes it takes to clean the surface is a much better analysis.
EDIT: Weighing the sponges would also give a good comparison. The Magic Eraser may be twice as dense (basically getting 2 sponges worth of the off brand).

I feel like the 100 pack are gonna be better for a usual person, because I dont think a lot of people would want to store one dirty sponge instead of tossing it away and using a new one when something is dirty again
It's according to what I'm using it for none of this would be much of a health issue I'd rinse it thoroughly and sun dry it. The only time I toss a used sponge is if It was used to clean up any kind of cooking surface or if I used it to disinfect something. But I believe every penny is sacred so eh
I can definitely vouch for the fact that the cheaper ones just disintegrate 😅. But I am still always amazed at how helpful they are on getting rid of super tough stains. I'm also shocked that they were able to get up that spray paint!

And as for the difference: Ultimately, all these products are made of melamine, which indeed works like very fine sandpaper, and so does an eraser on paper. It does attack the substrate, but only very lightly, and the paint comes off much faster than you can see any damage. However, the material needs to be foamed up so that it is flexible and can get into all the tiny crevices of any surface, and you can use a lot or a little air when foaming up. The more you use, the softer it gets and the easier it falls apart, but it also saves you material because melamine costs money, air is free.
I'm not a loyal TylerTube viewer, but every few months I get a video recommended and I can't stop myself from binging all the videos I've missed in one day.
One thing I noticed- the magic eraser seemed to absorb what it was cleaning vs the off brand seemed to break stuff loose then spread it around. With things like paint and stuff, that could actually stain the surrounding areas
As long as u wipe it up as u go or wash it off u should be fine
He was also still using the same one. He could have swapped to have a cleaner one. Even if it took 2 or 3 off brand, it would still be cheaper.
Would it really stain? Wouldn't you just use the eraser to scrub it? But then, I think if you were doing a real job, you would have a rinsing cloth handy!
@@Britgirl58 a second eraser perhaps, but yeah. At that cost difference it'd still be cheaper to use 2 off-brand erasers. It'll only stain if you don't finish absorbing the dirty water stuff off the wall (and then you'd just use another eraser to remove the stain anyways).

I have a head that goes into a drill and holds a magic eraser material. You need to get one of those and let the drill do the work for you. I believe it was ryobi brand, I got it at home depot in the cleaning section. Once you wear out the pads that it comes with, you can just use the head's Velcro to hold and spin actual magic erasers
The funniest part is that in ALL of the tests a rubber eraser would have actually been more effective than either lol
The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser looked just like the other sponge when they first came out ( No Side Grooves / No Diamond Pattern ) these were added later. 😊
I think this just makes the choice to buy the magic eraser more clear, just a little easier to use, less elbow grease needed, and one sponge lasts longer. The fact that the other is falling apart so fast makes it quite an easy no for me unless I planned on using it once and disposing it.

Generally speaking, the channel produces more content related to making a mess of something as opposed to cleaning but I appreciate this comparison and actually learned that you are not just paying extra for the name in the box all of the time.
It seems to me that for most things you'd want the offbrand ones but for really tough stuff like getting things off concrete then you should probably get the Mr. Clean ones for durability.
Good review though, this is definitely helpful to keep in mind for future cleaning.

I do think that the off-brand sponges work worse, because they came second. The paint / pencils dried up a little more so it was a little harder to get off. I do think the's perform the same.
Where i noticed the biggest difference was on pots and pans. I've tried this already at my house but I'm glad you are showing everyone

I think the off-brand one was working less and less easily on the wall because you scrubbed off the smooth top layer of the paint and the surface was getting rougher and harder to clean. When you used it for the first time on the floor and door after that it worked perfectly again.
When you ran your fingers across them i almost chucked my phone, that was egregious 🤣🤣
I think the magic erasers are comparable to 10k-12k grit sand paper. You can ruin stuff like leather and paint if you go to crazy.
The grooves that run across the Mr. Clean erasers help give it that extra gripping power to get stains off.

The one thing I found so far that the Magic Erasers couldn't defeat were years' old popcorn stains in a plastic bowl. Oh, and nicotine stains on guitar tuning pegs.
Also, I found a "first generation" Mr Clean Magic Eraser in a box and they used to just be squares with no diamond pattern, lol. Bet they were cheaper then too.
The magic eraser also soaks up more of the water and color while you’re scrubbing. All the off brand spounge test left a pool of dirty water which could possibly stain other materials around what you’re cleaning
No it's leaving residue of itself behind. Sometimes all magic eraser does is cover up lol

When we purchased our new shower surround, made of acrylic, they were very specific about abrasives: none. Not even Magic Eraser. On the other hand, it always cleans fairly easily with just a rag and a little dish soap or vinegar: no bleach allowed, either.

Damn this shows that the last job I was at(Industrial cleaner) the cleaning supplies were dirt cheap the magic erasers would disitigrate after a 5 minutes of scrubbing
Tyler, I bought the 100 piece pack about 6 months ago, still have about half left and a couple things I use them for, the glass top stove they are awesome for, and our kitchen sink is getting old and yellows at the bottom, normally we would pour bleach in the sink to take the yellow out but the cheap magic eraser works just as good. Also, I got the pack of 100 for $18 I believe it was. They are worth it.
If you have the type of sink I think you do, you might try Bar Keepers Friend (powder), it is like Ajax power but different...use at your discretion of course.
i've found that SuperClean Degreaser Spray works best for removing yellowing and grease. Bar Keepers Friend Superior Cookware Cleanser is great for metal
@@jayson8372 It is a white porcelain double sink, it is about 20 years old now. Has some chips, scratches etc. turns yellow at the bottom on one side, not so much on the other. It is about time for a new one. I will look into that stuff. Thanks.

When the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers first hit store shelves they were exactly identical to the off-brand here. Same shape, same size, same texture.
I'm 62 I had a cleaning service for like 35 years I always laughed at those gimmicks mops, sprayers, sponges, vacuums it didn't matter. I went with traditional spray bottles mix water with Clorox and water with Pine-Sol or Mr Clean an old fashioned sponge old-fashioned mop n bucket, Terry cloths are the best some Windex a bucket to put all your crap in and some gloves a canister vacuum a decent price ...a throwaway so you don't have to go keep getting it fixed.. Bam cleaning kit!

Just to note the baby forumla scandal was when they found melamine im the powder. Thats what there are made of, probably not a good idea for cleaning people especially babies

FYI, you were not comparing like for like. Magic Erasures come in like 5 different kinds and you have #2 which is for more caked on grime, hence the dense foam and texture. The original Mr. Clean Magic Erasures look identical to the ones you got on the cheap. They are rectangle and smooth. Thats the box I got. If you look on the back of your box it should have a chart showing which erasure is good for what thing.
I have had the same original pkg of original ones for a long time now but thats bc my husband learned how to clean from his grandma. If your nostrils are not burning due to bleach and pine sol, it is not clean. Gives me a migraine. Ugh!

You let the markers dry for longer for the offbrand, which likely would have made it harder to erase
Where I have found these work great is cleaning the soap scum off the tub. After trying many different cleaners and scrubbers with limited success, the eraser does the best job at a fraction of the effort. I bought a big brick of the no names and am happy with their results.
I've had really good experiences using them for wood stains and finishes. they break when they've been wet for too long but if you buy the el-cheapo sponges its totally worth it for that application.

Honestly I don't think you get any more with the Mr Clean, they may be slightly taller but with all those grooves cut into them they probably equal out to be the same or even less.
They have different densities, he probably should’ve weighed them to see which one really has more melamine but not that important

I could see getting the economy package if you have a cleaning service and need a fresh sponge for each household or job. I work in a package shipping place and the boxes in and out make the walls really dirty. Magic erasers clean and prevent repainting so often. Mr clean lasts longer. However, if you are getting 3-4 off brands for each mr clean, might be about the same price wise in th long run.

We've been using the off-brand version for years now, we use them for small things like you said at the end.
What helps though, is folding them in half to double the thickness.

I love your videos, but this was an extremely clickbaity title. At the end you couldn't even give us a clear answer on which sponges you preferred more, which pretty much tells us nothing. all we know is the mr clean ones lasted longer and the cheap ones fell apart.
It's not a scam, the product still works, however you're paying for the name, just like anything else. It's not like oxy clean, which is a scam.
Edit: Mr. Clean obviously performs better than the off brand and is more durable.

Funny thing. When Mr Clean first came out I purchaed them ande took them to work with me to use. The original format of the sponges were exactly the same as the cheap ones in this video. They werent as thick and did get used up quickly. Looks like Mr Clean upgraded their product.
MagicEraser works as a micro abrasive. It’s removing material which is why it dulls the luster of the wall when you scrubbed it

Yes way..! As a bicycle mechanic I use this to clean bike parts and it always works like a charm. It even removes scuff marks on a bike frame without damaging the paint.

I tried these once years ago. The paint was transferring to the sponge and it also took off the stripe pattern on my wallpaper. It was easier to just use a dollar bristle scrub brush dedicated to bathroom use on those tiles.

In the past I found if spray paint wasn't on there long it can be removed with many kinds of sponge or scrubbing products. But if you leave it there long enough it won't be as easy to remove. So how long was that line of spray paint on that door when you did the test?
