    If you're getting into hike and fly and you're not sure what kind of harness you should get, here's a video to help you choose the right one for you. I recommend these types of harnesses only to do hike and fly in non-crowded areas, and in non-thermic and light wind conditions, to minimize the risk of middair collisions, collapses and rough landings. That's what I use these for: just to fly down after a hike. If you fly in any kind of conditions, and crowded places of course you should fly with back protection and a rescue. That's what I do. Let me know if you'd like a video about gear for what I call "ameliorated hike and fly". 😀

    One clear (and probably the biggest) disadvantage by far with string harnesses definitely is the missing protection - there's absolutely none. People should also be aware that, at least in Germany and Austria, you loose any insurance if you fly without a certified protector - just wanted to have this mentioned. Save flights Joanna!

      Yes, of course the disadvantage of hike and fly harnesses is the lack of protection and that's why I only fly with them in non-thermic conditions and light winds. For me, hike and fly is just a way to exercise and get down quickly. For hike and fly in thermic conditions, I use a proper pod harness with certified protection and rescue. Safe flights to you too and thanks for watching.

      Do they insure if you fly without reserve?

      @@illlaNot in Germany (and Austria I assume), no.

      Also, sometimes hike and fly can sometimes turn ito an XC flight.
      Then you definitely need a decent protection, as you don't know where you will land...

      There's string harnesses with attachable protection (f.e. Néo String)

    Amazing video! Just what I was looking for! Trying to decide between the Ozone F*Lite 2 and the SkyWalk Sleeve. Ozone takes the Cake as far as being the lightest. But they say not to use the F*Lite 2 with a reserve attached to the soft maillons... Still have to ask them about that. I think as far as durability most string harness are going to have a shorter life span, but if taken care of can probity last for years of safe flying.

      I'm glad you liked it and I hope it will help you choose the best option for you. You're right, you shouldn't use the soft links to connect a reserve parachute, in that case, you should use regular maillons. See you in the air!

      @@joannadigrigoli What is the reason for not using the soft links? I got the Ozone FLite2 and been flying it (not knowing this) with my reserve attached to my soft links... Appreciatte the answer/reasoning...

    Hola Joanna. Disculpa que te pregunte. Estoy interesandome por el parapente recientemente y parto de cero. Me estoy escuchando todos tus podcast, leyendo manuales y preguntando a quien puedo. Los equipos que utilizas en el video tan ligeros permiten coger térmicas y vuelos dinámicos o solo descenso? Me I Teresa el hike&fly, pero no se si permite hacer cross. Gracias y un saludo.

      Hola Miguel. Gracias por escuchar el podcast. Sí, los equipos ligeros permiten volar térmico y hacer cross, todo depende del equipo que se escoja. Ya estás haciendo el curso? Tu instructor podrá guiarte para comprar el equipo que se adapte a tu nivel para que progreses con seguridad y te diviertas. En cuanto al hike and fly, es una disciplina bellísima, pero que debe abordarse con precaución porque se vuela con equipo muy minimalista. Saludos!

    Do you fly with a rescue? String harnesses look cool but you are not getting any back protection right? Is this a concern for you?

    • @joannadigrigoli
      @joannadigrigoli  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hi! Of course this is a concern for me, and that's why I choose the conditions I fly in. I don't fly with a rescue, but I never do hike and fly in thermic or windy conditions or in crowded places. That way, risks such as collapses or middair collisions are minimum. Then, I only have to pay extra attention on take off and landing. For hike and fly in thermic conditions, I have a proper hike and fly pod with protection and rescue. Thanks for watching!
