EN: We were on our gravel bikes for 9 sunny days. In total we drove 500km and did 10,000 height meters. On the first day we go to Maria Alm to see Manuel's parents. The next day we had a big leg over the Großglockner High Alpine Road to Oberdrauburg to Manuel's sister and her friend Luggi. There we enjoyed the hospitality and the rich-kid feeling on the mountain pasture. Strengthened, we continued on to the Dolomites. We took it easy one day because the strong northern foehn whistled over the mountains and we wanted to fly near the Three Peaks.
After a brilliant exploration of the Via Ferratas around the Paternkofel and an unforgettable night there, we set off from the summit shortly after sunrise. Manuel helped me with the Kobra start and he managed to start on his own after a few attempts (he was even more happy - as you can hear) in really bad starting conditions. What a good morning flight! But on this day we wanted to go even further. So we packed our things and drove to the foot of Antelao. There we walked another 1200 meters to the hut and slept luxuriously in the winter room.
The following morning we had an unforgettable climb to the second highest mountain in the Dolomites. A free ledge of rock that felt like it lasted forever, which fortunately wasn't as smooth up close as it looked from below, was the highlight as well as the flight. Even though we were traveling with the UFOs, it took forever thanks to the 2400 m altitude.
We spent another night at the foot of the Antelao and then drove to Lienz and from there took the train home. What a brilliant adventure with everything you need on the bike - just live the day - stop there, go up and ride and fly down wherever it suits you. Pretty!
DE: 9 sonnige Tage waren wir mit unseren Gravel Bikes unterwegs. Insgesamt fuhren wir 500km und machten 10.000hm. Am ersten Tag gings nach Maria Alm zu Manuels Eltern. Tags darauf hatten wir ein fette Etappe über die Großglockner Hochalpenstraße nach Oberdrauburg zu Manuels Schwester und ihrem Freund Luggi. Dort genossen wir die Gastfreundschaft und das Rich-Kid Feeling auf der Alm. Gestärkt ging es weiter in die Dolomiten. Einen Tag gingen wir es gemütlich an, da der starke Nord-Föhn über die Berge pfiff und wir bei den Drei Zinnen fliegen wollten.
Nach einer genialen Erkundungstour der Via Ferratas um den Paternkofel und einer unvergessliche Nacht in ihm, starteten wir kurz nach Sonnenaufgang vom Gipfel. Manuel half mir beim Kobrastart und er schaffte es dann alleine auch, nach ein paar Versuchen (er freute sich dann umso mehr - as you can hear) bei richtig unguten Startbedingungen, zu starten. Was für ein Guten Morgen Flug! An diesem Tag wollten wir aber noch weiter. Also packten wir unsere Sachen und fuhren zum Fuße des Antelao. Dort gingen wir noch 1200hm bis zur Hütte und schliefen luxuriös im Winterraum.
Ein unvergesslicher Aufstieg auf den 2 höchsten Berg der Dolomiten hatten wir am darauffolgenden Morgen. Ein gefühlt ewig langes freies Felsband, dass von der Nähe glücklicherweise nicht so glatt war, wie es von unten ausgesehen hatte, war das Highlight sowie der Flug. Der dauerte, obwohl wir mit den UFOs unterwegs waren dank der 2400hm ewig.
Wir verbrachten noch eine Nacht am Fuße des Antelao und fuhren dann nach Lienz und von dort mit dem Zug nach Hause. Was für ein geniales Abenteuer mit allem was man braucht am Rad - einfach in den Tag hineinleben - dort stehen bleiben, rauf gehen und fahren und runterfliegen wo es gerade passt. Nice!

Awesome! Just a quick question. What type of carabiners are you using? I just started paragliding and is using my carabiners that I previously bought for climbing. From what I can find on forums on the internet it dosen't really matter what kind of carabiners you should use for paragliding, as both climbing and paragliding carabs should be plenty strong enough. Just curious as I saw you were using climbing helmets (as I do as well) :D
Hey, I've always used carabiners that are specifically approved for paragliding. Climbing carabiners are designed for falling into the rope and for light static loads. Paragliding carabiners have to withstand changing loads and sometimes (in the case of spirals) high continuous loads. I am currently using the Grivel Plume carabiner, which is a climbing carabiner but is used as a harness carabiner by well-known paraglider manufacturers. Soft carabiners like those from Airdesign are also brilliant (connecting them to the paraglider is more complicated). Best regards from Salzburg and always nice flights!

What's the cost of your paraglider
I bought it second hand. It cost me 600 euro plus 300 for the harness. But I had luck the glider was like new. Normally you have to spend about 1800 for a user beginner set (paraglider+harness+rescue parachute)

Hi Paul, darf man fragen, wo genau ihr gestartet seid? Welche Himmelrichtungen würden sich für einen Start eignen?
Hallo Bernd also am Paternkofel sind wir Richtung Westen gestartet. Klippenstart und es ist sehr schwer den Schirm dort ohne Hilfe hoch zu bekommen. Am Antelao sind wir bei leichtem Rückenwind am unteren Ende des markanten Felsbandes Richtung Norden gestartet.
Wow!!! Euer Start am Paternkofel!!! Da muss man schon wissen was mann tut. Hut ab!
