    Imagine the reaction of fans who first put on Pacific Ocean Blue and hearing this opening track, a colossal gospel masterpiece that ranges from joy to sadness seamlessly with restraint and haunted beauty in its melody.

      Colossal is the word! I just listened again for the first time in a few years and it’s still astonishing. It’s bigger than Kashmir or any other monolithic track I can think of. The groove is incredible, it’s a slow tempo yet the whole thing feels like a rush.

    Just listen to that intro and then the vocals leading into the building crescendo of the River, the feeling of freedom created in the first 30 seconds.How many songs just have that something that elevate them.

    The Wilsons all bore the scars, physical and emotional, from their dad's abuse. It took a lifelong toll, it shortened the life of Dennis and blighted Brian's and Carl's in ways we on the outside could never completely understand. The love of the brothers for each other is what made them survive at all, what made Dennis' brief time in the sun even possible. The goodness of a few special people who went the extra mile and then the next and the next and the next for a long time explains their longevity as much as their talent does and made Brian's remarkable comeback possible in equal measure with his spirit and courage. And those people who dared to actually help had to put up with a lot of abuse from the people in the Beach Boys organization who were better at exploitation than compassion, who were better at pushing than giving a hand up. Dennis deserved bettter than he got from a lot of people, starting with his dad.

      Beautiful tribute, Deborah. I made a pilgrimage to sunny Californ-I-A when I was about 20 years old. Scoped out Brian's Bellagio house and the Brother Studio in Santa Monica but was too chickenshit to knock on the doors. I always DREAMED of hanging with ANY of them. Brian's exactly 10 years older almost to the day. I looked up to these guys as boyhood heroes. Love, love, LOVE their music. Dennis was probably the LEAST understood and most-overlooked member of the band, even though he WAS a Wilson.

    • @1401minstrel
      @1401minstrel Před 3 lety +5

      True. The abuse certainly heightened their addictions, which shortened the lives of both Dennis and Carl. Dennis died at 39 and Carl at 51. Both too young.

    Dennis should have received a lot more praise for this in 1977. He was always self-doubting himself with this album! He never really knew what he meant to his fans. I think he just thought he was a drummer and a sex symbol to his fans, though we all know he was obviously pretty good at both of those titles as well!

      Huh, I had never really though about it like that but I think I agree. It continues in the soul territory that they had moved toward with Holland. Unfortunately that progress got sidetracked for the BRIAN'S BACK nonsense of 15 Big Ones.

    He deserved more success and recognition. This is Number One, Grammy worthy song.

One of the threads on the programme on the smileysmile forum has Ed Roach talking about filming it + the "my name's Dennis Wilson and I make rock'n'roll records" bit with that shirt tied round his neck. (part of the thread's pretty bleak re his last years/days and peole who were close who tried/wanted to help him. If you find it, be careful reading it).
