- I'm taking you on a really awesome yet challenging journey of playing two live gigs on the same day. And
And I'm sharing some valuable tips for solo musicians to help you plan for these types of days when you have back-to-back gigs or multiple gigs on the same day.

The two live gigs were on a Saturday but I also had a long gig that night before. So here's what the weekend of live music looked like:
Friday: Live gig from 5-9 PM (Keel & Curley Winery)
Saturday (1): Live gig from 1-5 PM (Fiorelli Winery)
Saturday (2): Live gig from 7-10 PM (Bootleggers Brewing)
I'll admit, we had a great time but it can be a bit daunting planning for something like this.
And I hope the tips I give you help you with your live solo shows.
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions or anything you'd like to add that helps you with playing live solo shows.
Keep it Metal,
Jason

Two solo gigs in one day is every Monday - Thursday for me. Little different in my case living in nashville and being a Broadway guy. But still the same! Biggest hurdle for me was conditioning my voice to handle 40+ hours of singing a week.
Man, that's awesome that you have those steady gigs each week! Here in the Tampa area it's typical to play the same venue once a month although I do have a few places I play 2x a month.
I bet it's awesome living in Nashville!
40 hrs a week is too much fella .
Ken is fricken awesome.. never felt so prepared for gigs and I’ve been doing it for years. Really really helpful equipment tips and just so encouraging
Yeah, I do his warm ups every day!
@@jasonstallworth I meant to actually say “Jason” as in you but hey ken is awesome too!!! Thank you for all your advice Jason
Cool video, thanks. I occasionally do 2 a day...can be tough. I feel your pain...bought new Martin 12 string with Fishman Matrix electronics. Would crap out and make awful noise. Of course it waited until out of warranty. Had it swapped to passive K & K which works fine.
Great info on voice care and warmups. I am careful in selecting songs to avoid strain.
I really need to get a passive pickup to use as a backup!
Another excellent video. Thank you for putting it together!
Glad this helped! I also have a complete guide to playing solo gigs if you haven't seen that yet: czcams.com/video/dy0Ru6RHH9c/video.html
What a great video!!
🙏🤘
Thanks man, more videos would be great!
Definitely more coming! I had considered making a new channel strictly for live solo gig tips!
Great video J enjoyed it 🎸
Thank you! I just got a new acoustic (Zager) here: czcams.com/video/T2WE5e_Eb9I/video.html
Love your videos of your live shows with your wife. Very cool man! Me and my wife have just started back up doing rehearsals to start going back out and doing shows in NYC. Your clips of your live shows are always good man! I look forward to seeing more since I've discovered your channel. And your tips are so spot on for live gigs! You never know what may happen so be prepared. Rock on good Sir! 🤘🏾🎸
Thank you and I'm really glad to hear you and your wife are playing live up there now! It's such a cool experience!
@@jasonstallworth yeah when I saw your channel it was inspiring! Up here we needed to get out and do this again. But surprisingly a lot of venues have closed down. But us musicians/Artists, we’re still pushing the envelope up here.
Good stuff bro.
🙏
I used to do 2 solo gigs in one day every now and then at one particular restaurant I was fortunate enough to play 3-4 days a week. Really had to learn to pace myself and take good care of my voice. It's easy to blow it out and render yourself very, very hoarse. So, yeah, always keep up with the exercises. You wouldn't let your guitar strings get rusty, right?
So, now that I'm turning 71. Still gigging pretty regularly, but playing less often than I did a few years ago. So I'm on my way to an afternoon party for a one year old, which as you know, you're really there for the parents, grandparents and their friends. So the set lists have to include the whole spectrum... from Baby Shark to Mack the Knife and all the generations in between. On the way, I get a call from a fellow solo musician. He wants to know if I xan cover for him at a restaurant gig from 8 till midnight. Long story short, I agreed.
Talking to a friend a couple days later abour it. He says, "You did a Double-Springsteen!"
That's what I'm calling it from now on.
That's awesome man, and thank you for sharing your story! Yes, vocal exercises are crucial and love the analogy of not letting your guitar strings rust!
Ken is the man . I learned so much from him.
Yeah, I’m a big fan as well and he’s got some great vocal tips!
Cool Jason very cool 2 gigs in one day nice these are great tips 🆒🆒👍👍
Yeah it can definitely be challenging but it’s also an adventure!
I have the same Martin. Just got it and I love it. There’s a phase switch behind the volume and tone knobs, try switching that. It can cause some funky stuff to happen when your playing at higher volumes.
it's been great although I just started having a little string buzzing yesterday due to the extreme weather changes here in Florida. Hoping that will balance itself out
Great advice Jason! I agree about your significant other, my wife is always with me setting up & running sound & taking care of our merch sales & bookings, so important!!! We've done a ton of double hitter gigs, just did 2 gigs yesterday, Saturday, 9/17/22, our 12-3pm gig at Yucatan's in Matlacha Island, just west of Cape Coral & Ft. Myers, then had to hurry up & drive across alligator Alley to Miami to play 8:30-10pm gig, then drive home to N. Ft. Myers, we didn't get home & unloaded until 3:45 am Sunday morning, so we basically had a 20hr day!!! Needless to say we were exhausted!!! I always bring deorderant & not only a change of clothes, but shoes as well, to help protect my pedals from the dirt & sand, especially when it rains, which be we get a lot of down here in Florida, LOL!!! GREAT video my friend, you ROCK BROTHER!!! You & The Mrs. be safe, Rock On & God Bless!!!
Dude, that was a long day for you guys! It’s awesome to be out there doing it though! And every time is an adventure!
100 percent agreed. She is wanting me to gig at different bars and she also surprised me on my birthday with a brand new jackson guitar (my favorite band)
Amon amarth shirt is dope that album is awesome 🤙🏼
I saw them live many years ago here in Tampa and was hooked!
I second the change of clothes tip. Had a outside gig yesterday and my acoustic duo partner and I were soaked in sweat before even playing. I’ve only done the two gig thing once and it was tough. My fingers were like chopped meat after. Cheers Jason, love these vids. I gotta get out there solo.
Yeah, that extra shirt for setting up makes a huge difference! Definitely start doing some solo gigs man!
Speaking of soaked in sweat, I HIGHLY recommend having a small container of baby powder within easy reach. Nothing worse than trying to play guitar (especially electric leads) with sweaty, sticky hands.
We used to pull double duty once in a while -- the two bands I was in shared members. So I'd play rhythm guitar in my metal band, then hop on the keyboard for the other band. So much chain smoking. :P
Those sound like fun day! You probably got to play different styles!
Can you give the exarmples about ...what we should say between songs ( how to introduce song ) ...like crowd handling tips...
I’ll be making more videos on this but about each set, I always ask if there are any birthdays or special occasions!
I also like to just say thank you to everyone about every half hour.
A lot of times, people just want to have drinks, food, and chat with their friends. You can engage but read the crowd…oftentimes you don’t wanna overdo it
@@jasonstallworth Yeah..thats really cool tip..thank you for that...btw mannger in the pub always say "' say something ,dont let the people to feel boring " he ask me to ,
1) introduce song
2) thank people
3) promote the pub
4) do some jokes with the audience
5)always grab their attention to the band
Can you just give me the exarmples ..what should i say ...
Btw i watched your videos..those are really helpful to me ...thank you very much for that ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hey Jason, I just wanted to tell you that I love "Passing Through" from the Masterpeace Album! I assume you used Logic Pro? Did you use EZ-Drummer? Didn't have the time to look it all up. Masterpeace rules so much!
Thank you, I appreciate the support! Those are real drums played and recorded by Cameron Fleury. That dude is a beast on drums!
(He also recorded the drums for my upcoming album, which I hope to release this year).
@@jasonstallworth I´m working on my project and your videos help me very much. Upgrading to Logic this or next month!
Hey Ken great stuff . I’m a solo acoustic player also just wondering when you do a four hour spot how many and how long are your breaks in between?
I typically take a 15 minute break after the first hour, then will play to the top of the hour and do the same. So it's an hour for the first set followed by 3 45-minute sets.
For 3 hours gigs, I sometimes play for the first hour and a half before taking a break, so essentially 2 longer sets.
I'd would have a second mic to mic the guitar as a back up.
I’ve got a few mics for backups. I do plan to get an external pickup as a back up
@@jasonstallworth I've been trying to get my solo acoustic stuff together over the past year it's just different for me cuz I'm mainly a drummer I think my problem is I just need like a good app to reference from with the lyrics and the chords
@@user-vm9hy7qx7c I’ve got a video on how I build mine and what I use here: czcams.com/video/FImy9inrrMc/video.htmlsi=XtU8CsnldhJQqJ58
Hey Jason, in my experience, it always happens just before you go on stage. It looks like a patch issue, 1 with higher gain or output, but did you solve the problems with the acoustic ? Here in Italy the heat is crazy but I'm Irish so not used to still it at all, I do everything from the Ceremony, Drinks, Full Band and Late DJ, whenever there's a pool I always take a swim but it's not always possible because of time and dodgy venue owners.
It does sound like the patch and I’m going to test more in depth today! I’ve never had issues with the patches for acoustic and have been using them for over a year. But weird thinks can happen.
Great video. I’ve never done a double header myself. Being 60 years old, I never do more than 1 gig per day. But the biggest thing is to not push your voice past it’s limits. Do lots of songs that are in your comfort range. So how did you like the sound of the Martin plugged in? Im guessing since you mentioned changing the pickup, you weren’t that thrilled with it.
That’s a great point about joy pushing your voice. I’ve done plenty of 4 hour shows to where my voice was rough the next morning. But today, after a long weekend of shows, my voice is fine. I attribute that to the daily warmups and not pushing to the max.
Yea, this pickup will be changed! More to come in another video!
@@jasonstallworth warming up definitely helps. Another trick is to make your mics gain higher than usual so you can sing softer and not strain your voice.
I live in Florida also was thinking about getting into the solo gigging. Do you need to be licensed to play out in Florida ?
I encourage you to do it! No, you don't need a license but I do recommend forming an LLC. Approach this like a business. Also, I have a complete guide to getting started playing solo gigs here (let me know if you have any questions): czcams.com/video/dy0Ru6RHH9c/video.html
@@jasonstallworth thanks I appreciate it. Just Have to get over the nerves.
I have 2 back to back gigs this weekend. Any tips on getting through it?
Hopefully the tips I share in this video help!
Hey Jason, is that a TC Helicon pedal you have on the floor? If so, which one?
It's the Mic Mechanic. I have a video on how I use it here: czcams.com/video/kNh6p-hNeZ0/video.html
Looked like the switch in the pod go wasn't latching.?
The switch was fine. This has happened a total of 3x and was always the last set in extreme heat.
What is the ballpark rate for a single act or a duo act?
It varies from venue to venue but 4 hour shows pay between $200-250. And most 3 hour shows will pay between $150-200. I'm not sure about duos as I haven't book any. Those have been the going rates in 2022 and going into 2023
I have got no problem with singing. My problem is memory. I can't remember words like at all. You wouldn't have to change your clothes in Britain, unless it rains LOL.
That iPad helps out tremendously for lyrics. I think you really have to enjoy the songs you’re playing, too.
Your singing voice is so different from your speaking voice. You sing much higher than you speak.
It throws people off sometimes! lol
Yeah my opinion bringing just one guitar to a live gig your just asking for something to go wrong either for back up or altered tuned guitars never know what can happen string breaks not cool to change strings in middle of a song lol but I've seen people do it just bring one guitar for a gig.
Man, that’s so true. Always need a backup, even if the backup is not the most ideal (like playing electric solo and singing for too long isn’t ideal; I only do it to break things up and to play a couple solos to a looper rhythm). None the less, it keeps the show going when something fails, which has (gggrrr!) happened twice recently!
And yeah, even a string break…it’s best to pick up that other guitar and keep moving. You can change strings on your next break!
You missed 1 vital tip. Don't drink to much before playing. It causes you to play sloppy although you think you sound great. 😆
Yeah, I really hope that would be common sense for folks. And I did include that in another video
Whaaaat? You had an 8 hours workday? How could that happen? Imagine, everyone worked that hard! We could actually have nice things around here.
Lol, more like a 13 hour day, collectively with everything involved (gigging is much more than just playing). But I love my job, and gigging isn't even half of it!
