Julia is so adorable. And Stephen adores her. Pretty astonishing to think that this was two years before he would write Sweeney Todd. Also ridiculous how in all the years they knew each other (they truly became close friends) and worked together, he never thought to write Julia an original role. I guess we should be grateful that in spite of this we were blessed with her glorious performances as Sally, the Witch, and Mrs Lovett.

I met julia mckenzie in london when she was doing follies. She was so warm and kind. I gave her some flowers and a few days later i recieved a beautiful letter from her. To this day i still have it as it is for me one of the great treasures in my life❤

One of the most natural and relaxed conversations with Mr. Sondheim I've ever seen.

We used to watch Mike Douglas every week. I likely saw this when I was a naive 16 y/o at high school and just really getting into theatre.

I wonder how many people in the audience had heard of “Pacific Overtures”

You know you've gained respect in the theatre when the audience will even applaud a list of show titles!

I used to watch Mike Douglas almost every day, except when that week's guest wasn't that interesting to a 10-year-old. This clip reminds me what a fine interviewer and pleasant host he was.

Funny how Sondheim was being almost eulogized in the late '70s, when actually in a way he was just getting started.
Julia McKenzie was the best Sally in "Follies" ever. (Juliet Prowse was the best Phyllis.)

I'm scratching my head as to how Julia McKenzie came to be billed on Broadway as 'Julie N. McKenzie'. There must have been a name conflict with an American Equity artist.

Great video. Could Mr Sondheim possibly be a little bit cocainated here?
