    Your experience at what to look for is invaluable. And as with the wall height , I don’t think I am experienced enough to be able to catch any mistakes. Going to need to rely on the sub.

    Great video Keith. On day one when the framers arrive on site, one of the first things I ask them to watch out for is to leave enough space on either side of the doors and windows for casing and painting. I usually ask them to leave at least 6 inches, preferably more - 4 for casing plus 2 to have enough space to be able to paint beside the casing. I also ask them to center any hallway door or window if possible. Very often architects just put together the drawings without considering details like these.

    I like your thoroughness about the truss. My GC passed off a completely wrong truss design that would have closed off a loft that was supposed to be open to below. It cost us a month of being at a standstill and $5000.

      Architects and engineers often fail to incorporate truss configuration correctly. I had a client who had plans drawn that had windows above the top plate, and they were shown in the elevations only. In the floor plan the ceiling height stopped at top of wall. So, this meant I had windows into an attic. I had to make a quick adjustment on the truss packet after they were delivered by pushing them apart and making a girder truss opening to grab that window light. The end result was actually better than what the architect created.

    Hey Keith great content. Have you heard of a California corner? Eliminates the non-access to corners so you can insulate before drywall

    This was a major eye opener 🤔.... Me and my wife are going to be a owner builder but I think it would be extremely wise to have our friend of the family who's a GC on site.. 🤔 there is a lot of work that the GC does that I had no idea you have to look for and I cut grass 6 days out of the week and my wife clean houses so there's no way we can be there 24/7

    Today is our Pre-Drywall walk. We've been in the house each week for the last 6 weeks. It's a Spec house, not Custom house so there is no moving of plumbing or windows, etc. One question: My wife and I notice on a few of the 2 x 4 boards , not perfect, have a chip/dig about 2 to 4 inches. Is that something we are looking for? And can ask to replace those boards? Or can the boards be imperfect? The other question we have for the contractor, is why most but not ALL outlets/holes have the insultation foam filling in? Thank You!

    Do you worry about putting mechanical and electrical etc in there before closing up openings? In Dallas we have issues with vandalism. Had all my wires cut at the panel day before inspection.

    Your videos are really interesting sir congratulations!. What kind of advice could you give to a person who wants to be a Project Engineer thru different stages of building construction especially if that person has a gap in his career?.
    Thank you sir

      I would owner build your own home, or something like that. Total immersion is a fast way to learn a lot. It is how I learned.

    how do you measure for trusses so late on??
    in this Environment we are ordering our Engineered products before foundation begins.

    • @HowToBuildYourOwnHome
      @HowToBuildYourOwnHome  Před 2 lety +2

      You order a schedule date and not actual trusses. I never order trusses directly, I get on the schedule to manufacture and have them come out to measure a few days before they build them, this way I can remove glitches and mistakes. I should do a video this. Yup, I will.

      @@MrsLilLady86 10 to 12 weeks here. I told my builder let's order early and I'll pay for it and store them. I'm still waiting on a response. I'm trying to help him solve obvious future problems but he seems to do things the same way he always have despite circumstances.

    Think it's funny when we walked our house during framing and our GC said we ask too many questions and to not worry about it. Let them do their job and trust them.👎

      I have been there. Keep asking question and demand explanation or intelligent understanding. Any builder who cannot explain and calm the client, is not up to it.
