- Up in the sky, that's a rocket arcing over the sky in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon. And see that explosion? That's the iron dome missile defense system in action.. Intercepting and eliminating the projectile.
It might seem like not much more than a blip in the sky, but take a look at the view at night. Each of those explosions is right here. A thwarted rocket attack.
The Israeli company that developed the iron dome system says the system has destroyed thousands of unguided rockets fired from Gaza and Lebanon into Israel since 2011.
But the iron dome isn't really a dome. Though it's meant to create a force field effect. They're movable batteries, attached to missile launchers that look like this.
And here's how it works - so first, its radar senses a rocket when it's getting close. Anywhere from 2.5 to 43 miles away. According to Raytheon - a U.S. defense contractor that helps produce them. Then, the iron dome's control center kicks into gear - and quickly analyzes whether a rocket will hit populated areas. If it determines the rocket will hit a town or a city, the system will tell a launcher to shoot off a missile that will intercept and destroy it mid-air. The fragments of metal and debris then fall to the ground.
The Israeli defense forces reported that it intercepted more than 95 percent of rockets during an operation last May. Over the last few days, the Israeli military says 4,500 rockets were fired from Gaza, and the Iron Dome has intercepted many.

This looks very ssimilar to the Iron Curtain project that DARPA was working on quite a number of years ago. That was meant for vehicles to stop rpg's though.
The iron dome and iron curtain both started development around the same time. The DARPA iron curtain was in 2005 and Israel's iron dome was 2006 and then it was deployed in 2011.

No intelligence is perfect. They probably kept their plans off line word of mouth only. From what I understand they hit the cameras and antennas first so they couldn't call in for help and blinded their high tech equipment. They hit multiple places at once and breached the walls with heavy equipment. All this while a major holiday was going on and many of the gaurds were sent home to celebrate with their family. They won't let their gaurd down again. I am pretty certain they didn't plan beheading their own children.
I'm wondering if the reason why Hamas keeps launching rockets when very few get through is because each defensive missile is costing Israel an exponential amount of resources that are finite, time consuming, and prohibitively expensive to manufacture.
They are spending US taxpayers money.
America pays for Israel's defense on top of the insane amount of taxpayer funded aid. At the end of each year they actually have a surplus that is reinvested. I have to honestly say that they have infinite resources.
Americans aren't taxed enough, that's what upsets me the most.
Trump always declined funding the Israelis' war, but when Joe Biden took his place, he immediately started funding them.

Why can't Israel afford to pay for the Iron Dome? Why does the U.S need to pay for it? Israel is a first world country with a GDP per capita of 58 thousand dollars and an overall GDP of 564 billion.

Soon as the attack was starting to get reported and I heard “thousands of rockets fired at Israel” my first thought was “what about the Iron Dome?” I remember seeing a couple videos on it a few years ago and I thought it was great.

Iron Dome is an advanced system that used Patriot as a starting point.
Out of 4500 rockets they've intercepted "many". What happened to the 95%? Should that be 4275?
If you do the math, if they actually intercepted 95%, each interception would cost around $100k, which would translate to $425M just for the ones that hit, not counting the ones that missed.

I believe thats old data, Hamas has been firing rockets at israel since 2011 and I think thats where the number 95% comes from. Recently Hamas has sent THOUSANDs of rockets in very short periods which is overpowering the iron dome. 5000 rockets in under 20 minutes and only 10-20 iron domes throughout the country.
Maybe 95% on intended interception? Seems in the video they may just let rockets that arnt going to hit anything do just that.

I always had this theory that given that a single iron dome rocket costs around 100k and a single iron dome obviously has limited capacity you could theoretically wear it out by just sending thousands and thousands continuously while also depleting a lot of their money cost benefit and now im seeing that theory being proven

What? Hamas has no dummy rockets. They just send a bunch of unguided missiles to overwhelm the iron dome. But there is no evidence that they have dummy rockets
Israel is reported to have ten Iron Dome batteries, each of which typically has 60 or 80 interceptor missiles available to fire. That yields a maximum of 800 missiles ready to fire, but that's for the whole country, so probably fewer than 500 were available in range to intercept rockets coming from Gaza. Estimating from the US Marine purchase of Iron Dome, each battery will have one reload available to it. About 2/3 of incoming rockets are calculated to fall harmlessly in uninhabited areas, so aren't targeted. Hamas fired about 4,500 rockets, meaning 1,500 were dangerous. Iron Dome is 90% successful at hitting targeted rockets, so the 1,000 missiles (including reloads) in the area likely took out 900 rockets, meaning 600 hit in or near populated areas. So even though there was considerable damage and loss of life, the attack would likely have been about three times worse without Iron Dome.

Hamas fired thousands of rockets and overwhelmed the system, there's only so many interceptor missiles available at one time. Not to mention the fact that the system is not 100% effective, some missiles were going to get through regardless.
Around 4,500 rockets were fired indiscriminately into Israel the past few days. Some will always get through.

The explosion isn't necessarily the incoming rocket being destroyed. The explosion is meant to be the thing that destroys the rocket but it is possible that there could be a miss.

Eventhough it was dropped due to excessive budget and not proven effective for the specific application, it may be just suitable for the current situation. I am sure, it is already developed to a certain level, but may not be mature enough for full scale deployment.

@@aware2action As of right now, space-based laser interception is impossible. The power output the laser would need to have is way more than what we can produce now. But the biggest problem is the fact that you would need to have THOUSANDS of these satellites in orbit in order to always have one close enough to intercept a missile, and each one would need to have a monstrous laser we can't even produce yet. That's why the Star Wars program scrapped the idea.

Id be curious to know if people die from the shrapnel/debris falling- yes you are destroying a missile with a payload, which is great, but you are doubling the amount of metal falling in the sky when hitting it with a second missile. Your facts are off. They made the partition plan in 1948, and Israel accepted it, the Palestinians walked away. Not that Israel hasn't done some awful stuff, but on this one its easy to see who the bad guys are. Only one side is deliberately targeting music festivals.

They are sending hundreds of missiles at once at the cost of hardly nothing. The iron dome isn't 100% effective, is insanely expensive and doesn't have unlimited ammo ready to go at all times.
Israel is reported to have ten Iron Dome batteries, each of which typically has 60 or 80 interceptor missiles available to fire. That yields a maximum of 800 missiles ready to fire, but that's for the whole country, so probably fewer than 500 were available in range to intercept rockets coming from Gaza. Estimating from the US Marine purchase of Iron Dome, each battery will have one reload available to it. About 2/3 of incoming rockets are calculated to fall harmlessly in uninhabited areas, so aren't targeted. Hamas fired about 4,500 rockets, meaning 1,500 were dangerous. Iron Dome is 90% successful at hitting targeted rockets, so the 1,000 missiles (including reloads) in the area likely took out 900 rockets, meaning 600 hit in or near populated areas. So even though there was considerable damage and loss of life, the attack would likely have been about three times worse without Iron Dome.
