  • BikeRadar headed north to take on one of the best gravel events of the year...Grinduro Scotland. We didn't just go to ride, we went to answer a burning question for the BikerRadar team - what is the best gravel bike?
With that in mind, we took 3 different bikes, a "traditional" gravel bike, a hard tail mountain bike and a monster cross bike to find out which comes out on top.

For me a gravel bike is about road rides with gravel sections, dirt roads, fire roads etc. And a gravel bike is certainly better for all that than a mountain bike. An mtb is better for single track, technical descents etc, yes, but for me that's a totally different type of riding. In other words, a gravel bike is a replacement for a touring bike or endurance road bike, not for an mtb.

Can one sofa do it all, or should we have event specific seating? Do you eat sitting on the same chair you would tackle reading in? Do you have a winter chair, to keep your lightweight one safe for the summer months?

Call me a luddite but surely the best bike for this would be a hardtail with a double chainset?
Suspension, large volume tyres, small gears for climbing, larger gears for speed, an optional dropper post for descending too.
Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of 1x but once you're on paved roads or fire roads you're going to spin out.

Full specs on bikes? Or at least the weight, tire width, tire pressure, gearing...some of which you mentioned but would love to see a table.
    Would you add a dropper?
    What about a redshift stem?
What tire width is your go to? 47mm - 1.9 in?
Love to see some on screen text, and you mentioned the winner, perhaps adding that as an on screen addendum once you know.
Enjoyed you take on your ride, keep up the good work (nice love seat by the way).

However, could please make a video addressing the opposite question " How much slower is a gravel bike with skinny tires compared to a designated road bike, e.g. a aero race whipped and a endurance bike". I probably not the only one who like to hear you guys rather honest opinion on this...

I’d say that the best bike would be the one suited to the type of gravel you ride. In South Texas, we have a mixture of crushed gravel, dirt, rocky gravel, washboard sections, a bit of everything. I’ve recently purchased a Giant TCX Advanced and it fits 43c Gravel King SK tubeless tires. I love this bike. It’s fast and it can accommodate these tires that have handled everything I’ve thrown at this bike. I had a alloy Niner RLT9 prior and this bike is much better feeling and handling.

What gearing was Joe running on the MTB?
Looks like a small chainring (30/32) and big cassette 44+??
Did you use the lower gears? Seams like a fit rider like you could use a much bigger chainring (36) to get higher top speed.
It seems everyone is running huge cassettes and small chainrings. Unnecessarily so i'd have thought.

Just crossed the Sprengisandur route in Iceland (on touring bikes). 26 inch wheels with 50mm tires were far superior compared to 28 inch wheels with 42mm (especially on the downhill sections), simply because higher volume allows you to hammer over rocks etc.

  • @PolyglotBikepacker
    @PolyglotBikepacker Před 4 lety

This was an MTB course where gravel bikes could barely manage. I would never take a gravel bike for that kind of terrain. I use gravel bike with 42mm tire for forest roads, paved roads, little rocks and thats it. Technical descents over big roots on a gravel bike is like going to a strip bar but not touching the honeys: a total teaser
