  • Katmai National Park: Come and take a tour of Katmai National Park with us, along with tips for a visit in this wonderful 4K video about bears, salmon, and volcanoes at Katmai
    Katmai is the best place to see bears in their natural habitat when in season. The sight of big brown (also known as grizzly) bears catching jumping salmon in mid-air is so much fun to see.

    I am lucky enough to have guided, fished at Katmai area and Kodiak the past 42 years. No place even compares to Alaska, simple!

      Wow!! I agree Alaska is very special. People who have not been there don't know what they are missing. I am a total novice to fishing and had a great time at Lake Clark with a guide. What are some of the other places for good fishing and bear viewing at Katmai or Lake Clark?

    That young bear is probably looking for a fish full of roe. Even though the river has trout in it, the bears will not eat them. They want the high calorie count the salmon provides. They eat those parts of the fish first and when gorging themselves for hibernation they will eat the entire fish. After all they have a relatively short period of time to gain enough fat to make it through winter until the fish return the following season.

    Great job putting your videos together. I especially appreciate that you present from the average visitor’s perspective as opposed to the glamor shots that most travel videos offer. I’ve just started watching your channel but will be checking out all your selections. So far I have not seen or heard any references to cost. Do you share this info anywhere? It’s always nice to get a handle on what trips and attractions costs when making plans. Keep up the good work and hope to se you at a park some time.

      I have not done the cost piece. It varies a lot based on which park and how you travel. Because of the remoteness of most parks, it's not cheap to get to even by car.
      Katmai is one of the most expensive parks to get to. We paid around $3500 for two people which includes air from Anchorage via King Salmon and 2 nights at Brooks Lodge. If you camp, it's cheaper (the lodge is almost $400 per person per night double occupancy). Food at Katmai is also expensive. For example, the restaurant at Brooks Lodge (about the only game in town unless you brought your own food) is $40 for dinner (buffet is only option) per person.
      The parks that can not be reached by car are generally very expensive to get to. Places like Isle Royal, Dry Tortugas, Lake Clark and Channel Islands require an expensive boat trip or air trip. Some parks like Kenai Fjords are best seen by a boat tour, also expensive.
      For other national parks that are reachable by car, we generally stay at gateway cities in places like Holiday Inn Express (and use points if we can) unless it's a huge park like Yellowstone when it takes a while to get to sights from gateway cities. In those cases, we stay inside the park and that is expensive. (my wife does not like tents or RVs)
      If you own an RV, it's cheaper and often get better places to enjoy the nature and sights. I looked into renting an RV but it's not much different than a rental car + hotel, especially because of mileage charges.
      The annual pass is the best deal out there if you visit more than a few parks. If you are senior citizen (62+), you can get lifetime America the Beautiful pass for $80. The whole car gets in with one pass. It was a ridiculously low $10 before 2018. You can also get an annual senior citizens pass for $20.
      For the younger set, the $80 annual pass is an excellent deal. The more expensive parks are already $35 for a 7 day pass. Three of those is more than the annual pass.

      Thanks for the update. I appreciate the additional info. We've visited @ 30 parks so we are familiar with the routine and the expenses, particularly Alaska. We would also like to visit all parks but now we're looking at the harder to get to locations. Its all worth it though. Let me know if you have any parks on your list you might want a visitor's perspective on. Maybe I can help you. Keep up the good work.

    Not eating the whole fish is called high-grading. When food is plentiful the bears only eat the fattiest parts of the fish. The fish being let go are males... no eggs/roe. Bears are not playing with the fish.

    • @JourneytoAllNationalParks
      @JourneytoAllNationalParks  Před rokem

      That makes perfect sense! Nature at work and being efficient, as least for the bears. Thanks for sharing. I feel bad for the fish though.
