    Great video! The Baltics are imo (very) underrated destinations.
    I have been to Riga once, Vilnius twice and to Tallinn six times! And I enjoyed all of them.
    For me Tallinn is one of my favourite cities in Europe because it has a very cool mix of old and new architecture. It has the (super) medival old town with the city walls, roterman quarter (old and modern mix), telliskivi is a very cool place to hang out with lots of street art and noblessner / patarei / kalamaja area has very cool architecture too plus there's the Kadriorg Palace and its very huge green park!
    And it has many great restaurants but so do the other cities.
    Tallinn has more like a Swedish/Germanic vibe
    Riga is a mix of Swedish, Germanic and a bit Polish
    And Vilnius has a Polish influence.
    You can't go wrong with any of these places. They're all very different from each other

    • @TravellingWithCon
      @TravellingWithCon  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thank you for your brilliant comment! I certainly agree! Yes they are all nice places to visit - each with their own differences. Yeah I definitely feel Tallinn feels much more “northern europe” whereas Riga and Vilnius are a much more “central europe” vibe.
      I certainly agree with the Poland comparison with Vilnius - I remember walking around the old thinking “this is just like Poland” 😅

    • @arturasandriusaitis8832
      @arturasandriusaitis8832 Před 5 měsíci +5

      It's not that Vilnius has Polish influence, but Poland has Lithuanian influence. Vilnius Baroque is unique on a global scale. And not only baroque. Gothic - St. Anna's church is unique. Also renaissance examples. In addition, Vilnius is an imperial city - the former capital of the Kingdom of Lithuania, then the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

    • @TravellingWithCon

      I don’t understand how you see Riga a city with a polish influence, Riga has many stunning art nouveau buildings on Alberta street especially, and this art nouveau art movement didn’t originate from Poland. It actually originated from UK, then it came to France, then Italy and then to Riga - but Riga has by far the most of these art nouveau buildings per capita in the world, and this movement was a artistic protest against Industrialization.
      I can definitely see how Riga has some Swedish influence but overall, I see Riga as it’s own unique thing but with some Germanic influences

    Really great to see the three cities again. I visited all of them in the last decade, but especially Riga and Tallinn. I loved them all too, but would pick Riga as my favourite, if only by a whisker. Incidentally, other cheap and fun places to eat in Riga: Vilhelm's pancake house and the Pelmeni bar, both in the centre of the old town. Not fancy (in fact Pelmeni has a kind of old Soviet vibe about it) but fun experience nonetheless. For a day out, you could take the train to Sigulda or Cesis, both have castles which I visited; most interesting.

      Nice to know! Vilnius is very pretty indeed - the most pretty of the three in my view! 🇱🇹

  • @Garybaldbee
    @Garybaldbee Před 6 měsíci +6

    I've been to all three cities (not on the same trip). They each have a lot to offer and, contrary to the general perception here in the UK, are quite distinct culturally and economically. Riga is the largest and has the greatest variety of things to see and do. The old towns of Vilnius and Tallin are very pretty but quite small and Tallin's in particular feels very much like a museum peice for tourists only, though there are things to do outside the old town - the Estonian maritime museum is great for example.
    On the whole Tallin feels smarter and more economically advanced which is wonderful if you live there but doesn't necessarily make it intrinsically more interesting to visit.
    The day trips are good from both Vilnius and Riga. Trakai in Lithuania is really picturesque and within an hour or two of Riga there is Rundale Palace, the Nazi prison camp at Salaspils and all the wonderful variety of things around Sigulda. It's actually easier to visit the Hill of Crosses in northern Lithuania from Riga than Vilnius. We didn't explore anywhere in Estonia outside Tallin, which I regret.
    On balance Riga was probably my favourite, but then my partner preferred Tallin so it's all very much down to personal preference.

    • @TravellingWithCon
      @TravellingWithCon  Před 6 měsíci +6

      I definitely agree with what you’ve said! Especially about Tallinn - the old town certainly does feel really tourists, as if it was a “disney-land” designed for tourists. But as soon as you go out the old town it’s like a different city - very modern, very up and coming and very “scandinavian”
      Whereas Vilnius old town was gorgeous and didn’t feel “overrun” with tourism at all! All three cities are extremely safe and cool places to check! (Much safer than the UK, aha)

    • @DanaStar-le2rm
      @DanaStar-le2rm Před 5 měsíci +4

      Vilnius have the biggest old town out of the three cities.
      Actually the old town of Vilnius is twice as big as Riga and Tallinn COMBINED.
      You can verify this easily.
      Also I’m very puzzled by your comment that Vilnius is smaller than Riga.
      Population wise, Riga is bigger by 16 thousands of people.
      By population:
      Riga 609k
      Vilnius 593k
      Tallinn 453k
      By area size:
      Vilnius is the largest with 401 sq km
      Riga is the second with 304 sq km
      Tallinn is the smallest with 159 sq km

    I have lived in both Vilnius and Tallinn. I will say that Vilnius is just amazing! I really miss that city and I think for anyone going to the Baltics, Vilnius should be a priority. For Estonia I will say that I actually prefer Tartu, the second largest city, over Tallinn. So for anyone that wants a prettier city I say Tartu over Tallinn. You are few ones who prefer Vilnius and Riga over Tallinn. Its always like 90% Tallinn, 10% Riga and 5% Vilnius.

      No. Usually 90% prefer Vilnius, 7% Riga and 3% Talllinn. How could the Eternal City of Vilnius be compared with the former backwoods of Livonia, Riga and Tallinn?

      @@arturasandriusaitis8832 Architecture. Vilnius and Riga have 17th, 18th architecture what is basic in Europian cities. Tallinn other hand have most well preserved medieval town in Northen Europe. 13th century etc..

      @@arturasandriusaitis8832 In this sense, I can understand why the author of the video preferred Lithuania or Latvia. He is not interested in history, but in the VIBE and the preciousness of life. I myself would choose Romania between Italy and Romania. Purely because I probably have a better time there. Objectively speaking however, Italy has more history to see and is generally more popular. Also numbers and overall reviews are favor of Tallinn.
