      It's pronounced "CAM-BELL". The P is silent. Campbell is a French Surname that, I think, got popularize throughout Canada as it expended from coast to coast. Calling it "CAMP-BELL" would be the equivalent of calling the serie Metal "GE-AARH" Solid and be as cringy.

    i have shit loads of suppressed trauma. its a very common symptom of PTSD. i barely remember any of my life pre grade 6.
    trauma also causes a mental disorder called dissociative amnesia. it can take many forms, from fully forgetting yourself to blips in your memory. i have the latter type.
    the whole disorder is a survival mechanism, but it only fucks with you later in life because i sorta need my memory, but i'll also forget things like wether or not i fed my cat.

    I feel I have a bit of a unique perspective on the MGS series and Raiden as a character. I actually never started my Metal Gear journey as Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 1 like most fans (well, I played a demo that ended at finding the "DARPA Chief"), despite my best efforts at the time when I was small. My journey officially started with MGS2, which was given to me by my previously estranged father as a Christmas Gift (along with Jak and Daxter, and a PS2). I was so excited to play, because I really liked what I saw in the MGS1 demo, and thought Snake was all kinds of cool. I read the instructions front to back, noticed some... odd things that indicated something was going to happen to shift the direction of the game, but played through the Tanker chapter as if I were playing MGS1 finally for the first time, except on better hardware.
    Then came the reveal of Liquid's "survival", the major mission failure, and finally the character shift to a new "Snake". I was confused, but interested. Who was this character that initially called himself the same name as the badass I finally got to properly play as? Why did the code name change to Raiden (which I only knew related to lightening due to playing Mortal Kombat), which I actually thought it fit better (as it felt like he moved quicker and was animated to be MUCH more acrobatic)? Why did the game ask for my name, bloodtype, and date of birth? And why did I start seeing silhouettes of Solid Snake right up until we find a dead ringer for him in Lt. J.G. Pliskin. This was almost too much for my little mind to keep up with, but I was SOOO in love with it all. As much as I wanted to still play MGS1 for real, MGS2 felt like my first real Metal Gear experience.
    And so, while I thought Snake was all kinds of awesome like some mythical hero (just like Raiden did), I felt more attached to Raiden. I cared about his troubles. I worried when things were going south. I wanted him to succeed, and was crushed again and again when failure after failure piled up, both in game and in story. Every revelation he went through hit like a tonne of bricks, and I felt very attached to the character. So when he came back in MGS4 as a cyborg ninja, of COURSE I was excited, but I also sensed something was... off (with deliberate purpose, which made me intrigued). And I played as the mythical (yet aging) hero of the series, I watched from the outside perspective as this wall that he had build around himself, this crushing loneliness that he had endured to protect Sunny, and himself, was slowly taken apart by the games events, and the mythical hero in question gave him the confidence and reassurance to persevere. To survive this nightmare and emerge the other side to take a well needed happy ending. One that I actually really liked, but one that I knew was bittersweet. Everything, from the lies he was told, to the war he fought, to the isolation he had, was taken away from him, and he was left (nearly)naked on the hospital bed, almost as if ready to be born into a new life. The scars of everything that happened being the only thing remaining, setting a sombre but hopeful tone for the poor guy. It kinda was like Beauty and the Beast, in a way...
    Then came MGR, a game I initially thought I'd never be able to play, as it was originally going to be an Xbox exclusive, showed that Raiden was back. I had no idea that it initially was going to take place before MGS4, but I didn't care. My boy was back! Then the rebranding was announced, and the game was made multi-plat, allowing my dumbass to get it. And I loved it. I loved the new tone and direction (feeling it fit his progression as a character gameplay wise). I loved that we got to see a mix of MGS2 and 4 Raiden as he went through the game, both in cutscenes and in codec, while also (hilariously and lovingly) trying to "Snake it up" from time to time to emulate his hero. And furthermore... I loved that he had to face aspects of himself that he previously refused to. MGS2 was about him trying to run from his past. MGS4 had Raiden try to build walls around himself to keep his personal issues locked up and those he cared for locked out. MGR was about him confronting everything, from his past, his choices, and his demons, all while opening up to those he knows, cares about, and learned to trust, and finally being able to take full control. He was no longer the awkward soldier trying to fill the shoes of someone he thought was greater, nor was he just some tool to be used and abused, knowingly or not. He was now a capable man, gracefully able to carve out his own path, and fight for what he believed in.
    Raiden is a very special character to me, and joined the ranks of Raziel and Dante for me ever since that day.

  • @Akalistos
    @Akalistos Před 2 lety +162

    Personally, I don't get the problem with Raiden's ending in MGS4 other than the original setup.
    For one, we know the Patriot weren't above baby-napping to force asset into their hand. They establish that with MGS2 with Sunny. Raiden is a far better asset considering the S3 projet (at least, one form of it which was the creation of a memetic clone of Solid Snake by giving him the same sort of memories) than a twice retired old war general. And the pregnant bit, although it can be missed, come from MGS2.
    What really shake my suspension of disbelief is;
    1- HOW THE HELL DID ROSE MEET ROY CAMPBELL?
    All through MGS2, you realize that you just talk with an A.I. They even go so far as to make you doubt whether Rose is real or not, implying that the A.I. scripted what she was allowed to say (because Patriot). If it wasn't Campbell then how did those two meet?
    2- How did they keep RAIDEN in the dark about this?
    I understand that talking about this might defeat the purpose of hiding the boy but lying to Jack for no reason is... Evil. He isn't always a cyborg. It's not like he they can see through his eyes or listen through his ears so, why not tell him?
    3- Where's Rose and the kid in MGS-R?
    At the end of MGS4, He got his family. He seem to be happy... but in MGS-R, Raiden leave for extended amount of time doing stuff and then, at the end, leave the company to go... ??? Anti-Hero mode? Full Justice mode? One thing is for sure, he went full deadbeat dad mode here. I'm sure his kid still waiting for his dad to come back with that pack of cigarette and that carton of milk.
    Edit: According to the wiki, he send them to New Zealand to protect them from Desperado... but the ending doesn't explain if he ever went back.

      Yeah, I've added in the edit but there ONE line you can miss in Raiden landing on the beach where he stated he send Rose and John to New Zealand. It's also stated that he join Maverick security - which I cannot believe isn't a massive reference to Megaman X and Zero in particular - to pay his family bills. In the end, tho, he become unemployed (left Maverick) to do... Meh! I'm sure going "Jack the Ripper" on bounty hunter is what gonna put bread on John's plate.

      I wasn't even a teen when the playstation released and still an early teen when the first MGS came out. I had no MSX to play the original nor did I ever came across the NES game before so it's second nature to call that series like that.

    I honestly liked Raiden in all three games. I liked him in MGS2 because he was just as ignorant as the player to what was going on yet still forgave Rose in the end. I liked him in MGS4 for the moments he had with Solid Snake, this time protecting him instead of Solid Snake bringing him back up from the dumps. And in Revengeance because he is still kind-hearted towards his friends but has to overcome all of these reminders of his past and moral conundrums.

  • @CaptainDV
    @CaptainDV Před rokem +10

    My understanding of where Raiden is as a character at the end of MGR is that he has accepted his past and is using it as motivation to protect people and prevent what happened to him from happening to anyone else. In the beginning of the game it's very obvious that even though he is working as a cyborg again for this new company, he is doing because 1 money, and 2 they are working to help build up an African nation to a point where they can be at peace and make progress. And he rose and their son are good. Even though after the game he goes on to continue his crusade, there's no reason for us to think that his relationship with them is in danger. If anything Rose will be proud of him for what he's trying to do, and we already know that his son thinks of him as some kind of superhero so the same would continue on. His son would be a teen by now so he might feel slightly abandoned at some point but I don't think that's something they can't get past.

    • @airysquared
      @airysquared Před rokem +5

      There’s codecs in MGR about how Raiden is concerned about how little he sees his son due to the nature of his job, and how he’d do anything in the world to make sure his son is happy. And his relationship with Rose sounds like it’s better than it ever was. The one where he’s worried about her getting mad at him over having to pay for the gate he broke at Solis is so funny! So I agree, it doesn’t appear to me that their relationship is in any danger, and as a sort of free agent post-game, he may well be able to see them more frequently. I do wish there was a cutscene that makes it more clear that no, he didn’t abandon them, because so many people think he did.

    RULES OF NATURE!!!
    My friend and I believe that Raiden is taking up Solid Snake's mantle: a good-hearted, if violent vigilante fighting for justice outside the law. TV Tropes has people speculating that Raiden could become the next Big Boss, but my friend and I don't believe that to be the case. He has people, friends, who genuinely care about and check in on him, who remind him of why he 'really' continues to fight. Sure, he's accepted The Ripper in him, he's learned that enjoying combat isn't a bad thing, he's carrying Armstrong's message inside him, but he's also not going full Darwin and bloodthirsty, either.
    Raiden's a good person who will never give up, who will ALWAYS do the right thing, even if he's labeled as a criminal for it. No matter how much Solidus, the Winds, and Armstrong wanted him to be a monster, he will always choose the path of the hero. He's no one's pawn anymore, after all.

  • @empdisaster10
    @empdisaster10 Před 2 lety +5

    Something I liked about your analysis of Raiden is that just because the patriots were gone doesn’t fix everything they did. Sundowner even brings that up and it seems to be what Raiden thought would happen. In Raiden’s mind the Patriots were what was evil about the world. They controlled war and they practically controlled the world. He helped rid the world of them. Everything seemed to work out. But it didn’t. People just flooded in to fill the power vacuum. So instead of one massive group controlling everything, you have hundreds of smaller groups all carving their own slice of the war economy.
    Raiden asks sundowner why they were doing this since the patriots were gone, and Sundowner gives him the answer he was fearing, that the patriots didn’t create war. They just used it, and that the embodiment of evil he saw in the patriots would never go away

    I largely agree with your analysis of Raiden. I too see his character development in Rising as him reconciling with the darker parts of himself. And anyone who thinks he’s just edgy or nothing like he used to be in MGR clearly hasn’t listened to many of the optional codecs. Yes, he is still edgy in those at times, too. But he jokes around, shows real concern for his colleagues and interest in them as people (even if he is a bit of an asshole at times), talks at length about his family and why he’s working with Maverick instead of a normal job, etc etc. I can tell you have listened to those. Good work.

      I really love Raiden in those codec calls because he really does feel like the older and matured version of Raiden from MGS2. Raiden in MGS4 kind of feels like such a drastic flip in character but I think part of that is because he was in a dark place after what happened between him and Rose but because of it he wasn’t as much of a lovable dork in that game.

    And I slightly disagree. By Rising, Raiden has become what the Metal Gear Solid games, especially the ones Raiden was in (2 and 4), stood against.
    From a SoL perspective, Raiden betrayed himself by letting the memes Solidus gave him fester and eventually rip open Detroit like a hospital blood bag.
    From a GotP perspective, he was overtaken by the war and everything that it did to him, which is exactly what Snake warned him about before going into the microwave.
    And even from the game’s own perspective, Desperado wins. Sure, they die, but none of them really care that they do. Hell, Mistral gets off on it. And much more importantly, they convince Raiden they’re right. And he becomes the next Sam, wandering the earth to get his revenge on those who ‘attack the weak’.

Now in mgs4 and rising, he has broken free and become his own person but he is still not truly himself. Raiden says that his sword is a tool of justice, it kept jack at bay, it kept his past from catching him, he even says so just before reawakening jack, the sword wasnt the one that delivered justice, it was raiden, but he feared it, once jack was back the fear was gone, and the sword breaking was the final thing he needed to fully be himself, the crux was gone, all that was left was the man, now complete and at ease with who he is. Out of every metal gear game, only in the fight against armstrong do we truly get to play as Raiden.
