The Reef Knot-also known as the Square Knot-is as simple as tying your shoes. In fact, it is tying your shoes.
Step 1: Hold rope
Hold one end of the rope in your left hand and the other end in your right hand.
Step 2: Cross ends
Cross the end of the rope in your left hand over the end in your right hand to form an "X."
Step 3: Entwine ends
Bring the end of rope in your left hand down behind the end in your right hand, then back up, so that the two ends are entwined-the left-hand rope is now in your right hand and vice-versa.
Step 4: Form another "X"
Use your right hand to pass the same end back over the end now in your left hand, forming another "X."
Step 5: Pull end through loop
Bring that end down behind the other end again, and continue pulling it through the loop that forms.
Tip
This knot can also be tied using two separate ropes, joining them in a "hitch."
Step 6: Pull ends
Pull the two ends to a symmetrical length, and you've got a perfect square Reef Knot on your hands.

A helpful mnemonic device to tie this knot: Left over right, right over left. - Jak na to + styl
Should NOT be used to join to join ropes, When under strain if one of the ends is pulled back over the knot it will capsize and come undone. It is called a reef knot because it is used to secure the reef points on a sail. This property is then useful as the knot came be easily undone.
It is good for joining ropes that need to be taken apart again. Just don't use it when it really needs to be secure. For that the double overhand or double figure eight is good.
The knot capsizes when the loose end is pulled hard sideways. As long as that doesn't happen it's fairly secure. Not everything is is a heavy load, sometimes you just need the extra lenght of a joined rope.
I'm gonna use this knot to join strands of yarn in crochet now! Much better than the way I was doing it. :)
Not good - look at the weaver's knot of sheetbend in this situation

i remember learning to do this when i was in scouts
Great video. However, this knot should never be used as a hitch - to tie two ropes together.
I made a swing with a bunch of 2ft strands of rope with this knot. Pretty fun
That's just waiting for an accident to happen! It is a very insecure knot and likely to capsize and fail...
@@drbaggy as long as you keep the tension on it it’s fine and will hold most people. It’s when the chain of ropes has slack is when the knot kinda falls apart
Thanks, I have to demonstrate it in school

That is not a reef knot - the way you tied it is a thief knot - with the ends on opposite sides...
