I think they made the right call, if he waits for Jonas and Yates he lets the peloton get closer too and it may give other GC teams an incentive to chase where as now only the sprinter teams were pulling. After what we have seen from Pogačar over the last two years, if I were Jumbo, I would try to take every chance to put him under pressure I can get. @@beckobert Green is not a "side" project, nor is Wout winning stages. He is one of the best riders in the world and at his peak. He serves the team brilliantly in many ways, both on the road (think Paris-Nice stage 8, in which he practically carried Primoz to the finish) and with the sponsors (think they like day after of 24/7 Wout coverage at the biggest race in the world?). And even with Wout and Laporte on the Green team, TJV still has the deepest climbing team in the field. If one of their GC guys doesn't win Yellow, it won't because they lacked support. It would almost certainly just mean that Pog was too good again.

It also allowed TJV to sit on for a free ride when everyone is killing themselves to pull back WVA. In stages to come, TJV will now have those matches to spend to further their team and their GC contenders. 3 of the top 7 ain’t bad.

Wout should NOT have waited for Jonas. There would have been much more of an impetus to chase if there had been a GC player up front pre-cobbles, particularly since a lot of Ineos and UAE were in the second group. If they’d committed to the chase from the off by adding to the sprint trains, given they still got within 8 seconds even with Alpecin being totally unaware Van Aert was still out there, they’d have almost certainly mopped him up and the stage win and top points would have been out of the question.
Van Aert was flying on a move that would have won him a Monument at that point - let him do his thang. The team will thank him for it later.
First non-mountain, non-TT stage won by the race leader of the Tour de France since Fabian Cancellara ambushed the peloton in 2007 - Van Aert is the Cancellara of our generation, and probably even more versatile.

He knew he had the legs to go for it, as well as teammates behind who could possibly slow the train. The peloton failed. If they’d stopped thinking about their individual teams and worked together as a solid group, they’d have brought WvA back easily. He was pulling away for half of the flat because the peloton couldn’t get their shit together. It was the perfect storm and WvA profited. The peloton should have seen this move coming. 100% correct decision to go for the stage win in spectacular fashion when in yellow - at least from an onlookers perspective. I guess there can be arguments against it from a tactical perspective. But it's only stage 4 and the tour is not decided in the first week.

Seemed like WvA caught the whole Peloton flat footed by breaking away. The chase never got organized, esp since most of the head of the pack was JV guys gumming up the works. Looked like great racing as well as ridiculous athletic work by Wout.
Pulled the flapping celebration, then made sure to tell the interviewer the the Yellow Jersey “gives you wings” while wearing his Red Bull helmet. NBC guys either missed it or pretended to…
Seems like real hardcore cycling people are more understanding about Philipson’s screwup? I guess maybe if you’re in the pack with your head down and no radio, & expecting a bunch sprint, it’s kind of understandable to think you’ve just won. Still I’m sure he wishes he hadn’t done the Superman pose.

This was Wout's day. Wout taking a win in yellow with Jumbo on his chest will be worth /loads/ of publicity to Jumbo across the Netherlands and Belgium. Wout and MvdP are big stars and well-known outside of cycling. Publicity for Jumbo-Visma with Wout winning stuff is great for the sponsor. Getting Wout a stage win in the early stages was no doubt a team goal, simply for the publicity. And doing it in the yellow jersey even better.

Probably the right call in the situation. Would have loved to have seen what could've happened if Roglic and Thomas were slightly further forward and didn't have spend energy going round dropped riders. There might have been potential for a 5/6/7 man Ineos/Jumbo TTT to put a bit of time into Pogacar?

Good decision making by WvA: had he waited for Jonas, GC teams would all have chased pedal to the medal. Even if they didn't catch them, they would have carried Yates with them, who would not have helped one bit obviously, and then he would have jumped them on the line, with his more than decent sprinting abilities

Right move. They gain 25-30 secs on peloton but massively increase chance of a stage win with out or Jonas. Time gain is nothing in the overall GC for Jonas
