Daft Punk were a French electronic music duo formed in 1993 in Paris by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. They achieved popularity in the late 1990s as part of the French house movement; they also had success in the years following, combining elements of house music with funk, techno, disco, indie rock and pop. They are considered one of the most influential acts in dance music history.
After Bangalter and de Homem-Christo's indie rock band Darlin' disbanded, they began experimenting with drum machines, synthesizers, and the talk box. Their debut studio album Homework was released by Virgin Records in 1997 to positive reviews, backed by singles "Around the World" and "Da Funk". From 1999, they assumed robot personas with helmets, outfits, and gloves for public appearances, and made few media appearances. They were managed from 1996 to 2008 by Pedro Winter, the head of Ed Banger Records.
Daft Punk's second album, Discovery (2001), had further success, supported by hit singles "One More Time", "Digital Love" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". Their third album, Human After All (2005), received mixed reviews, though the singles "Robot Rock" and "Technologic" achieved success in the United Kingdom. Daft Punk toured throughout 2006 and 2007 and released the live album Alive 2007, which won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album. They composed the score for the 2010 film Tron: Legacy.
In 2013, Daft Punk left Virgin for Columbia Records and released their fourth album, Random Access Memories, to acclaim; lead single "Get Lucky" reached the top 10 in the charts of 32 countries. Random Access Memories won five Grammy Awards in 2014, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for "Get Lucky". In 2016, Daft Punk gained their only number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Starboy", a collaboration with the Weeknd. Rolling Stone ranked them No. 12 on its list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time. They announced their split in February 2021. Daft Punk broke up in 2021.

Isn't leaving a party without saying goodbye called a French exit? Kinda poetic that one of France's most iconic dance bands retired without a big farewell.
I believe that’s an Irish goodbye.
"without a big farewell"? Did you see the beautiful video on their website? Most bands just makes an announcement and no "big farewell". I think Daft Punk made a beautiful farewell :) Check out the website if you haven't seen it!
@@Maxxzyy not really, even for daft punk this “goodbye” was pretty lackluster. Nevertheless I’m glad they’re happy with their decision and that we’ve been blessed with them these many years
@@germ_tb3_gm088 Absolutely! We have to appreciate they even existed and not grief the end, and their music will always be loved and played :)
@@Maxxzyy agreed
Unfortunately (or fortunately) since they funded all of their recordings themselves it's very unlikely that the labels are able to release any compilations of unreleased music.
Fortunately for sure.
Horizon can be considered their true final track, it's instrumental and is exclusive to japanese/deluxe release (the deluxe version of RAM also has a remix of Get Lucky)
A beautiful alternate ending to RAM
Starboy? I feel it coming?
@@SASTSimonOvernight? Infinity Repeating? Cookies?
Also hey 👋
Daft Punk is the most iconic duo of all time. Literally their helmets alone has done that. Crazy.
We all knew this was coming. This one gonna be a banger
The people behind Daft Punk didn’t stop producing music, they are producing music for many artists under their real names as individuals.
As far as released music, they've both only produced a handful of tracks by themselves (or at least away from Daft Punk).
@@jacobarmstrong5308 Can you enumerate them?
I'm pretty sure "Guy" is prounounced "Ghee", since it's short for Guillaime
Yep!
300k 🤝 good job
WRONG. daft punk collaborated with Parcels on their track Overnight in 2017.
the last song in their discography isn't Contact, it's Horizon (Bonus track released only in Japan).
This.
(Although to be exact, I believe Overnight came out in late 2016, the record I have's been released by Kitsuné in 2017 but I think I remember discussing the collaboration with some friends 3 days before Christmas 2016, maybe I'm just hallucinating though) :)
What should I cover next?
You should cover Death Grips
Bad Bunny, he is a legend!
Jcole -Bad Bunny - Camp Lo
Have you done something on earl sweatshirt yet?
Mac DeMarco
They also helped Parcels with Overnight and their debut self titled album
just on Overnight
Check out Horizon by Daft Punk it was on their Japanese release of R.A.M
Thank you.
I’ve been waiting on this one.
WASSUP MY FELLOW COMMENTERS
Love your videos man, it opens up my mind and my ears
2:55 They also helped out on that Parcels song post-2013 tho
5:11 100% true. I remember reading an article in 1997 when Homework came out saying the film impact of this album will not be known until likely a decade from now. Each album Daft Punk made rippled through electronic music and they set the trends.
Yep that’s bang on. I think that RAM won’t be fully appreciated for a couple years yet.
2:57 Correction, 3 songs: They also produced Overnight by Parcels in 2017, and that was the last song on which Daft Punk worked as a duo together.
Absolute legends. I’m so grateful for their music everyday
I still haven’t stopped grieving and it’s been 3 years. When I heard daft punk broke up it really depressed me and that sadness has never left me. I’m still so sad they broke up. I’m so sad that by the time I got to be an adult and afford concert tickets, they broke up. I’m more sad that I will never hear more music from them. I’m so heartbroken. They’re still my favorite band.
Nice video I’ll miss daft punk
When the critics hated them, I loved them, when the critics loved that pop/ pseudo 70's music I hated... But nonetheless, the impact they made is immeasurable, I even started produce electronic music because of them, all hail to the kings
this channel deserves a lot more subs.
I always liked Daft Punk but never listened to RAM as a smaller child since I liked the groovy beats but RAM was too classical for my taste back then. In 2018 though I listened to it and instantly fell in love and (3:35) the last tracks speech is from an Apollo mission which I thought to be symbolizing the robots leaving our planet for the stars.
Volksgeist releases a new video: *today*
Me: [Cries in Happiness]
This dude camera is cleaner than nasa satellite cameras
They were on gust of wind by Pharrell Williams in 2014
Another banger from volksgeist
I’ve been eyeballing CuriosityStream for a while now, but with Nebula now included really seals the deal!
It's funny, to me Contact has a really strong narrative of the astronaut seeing a UFO, with the rest of the track following it through space, hitting the atmosphere and eventually reaching the ground.
in 2017 they also made a track with the parcels
Nice vídeo 👌👏
I’m no electro music guy but you gotta respect it
Th first 5 second of this video is immaculate, crispy
Human After All is the greatest electronic album ever made IMO
Would you talk about their solo projects?
Pretty Please?
Absolute legends
Part of me thinks they went the masked route after people had such a bad taste in their mouth after the harsh treatment people had when they were in the band Darlin’ with the lead guitarist of Phoenix. They wanted a change of pace from Punk to house to escape their critic’s biases and wanted their music to speak for itself as they revolutionized edm, while they set the bar for creating more variations in French House than there predecessors. I think they have a really cool redemption story and while their Punk music wasnt “the best” i think its beautiful that their criticisms only fueled their drive to reinvent themselves. And their naïve childlike desire to humanize the intricacies and personality of technological instruments alongside their equally childlike machine-loving hero Leiji Matusmoto coming out with their identity defining “Discovery” album and work on Intersella 5555 was just icing on the cake for their success. Absolutely cool dudes with an absolutely cool story. They deserved every award for what they did for music, live performance, and multimedia art!
The CuriosityStream link does not work my dude! I get an error message when I click on it.
happy birthday human after all
Havent watched the full video yet, but I see the importance of critics and theories in any facet of life, but art has always been a weird one for me. I don't think it should matter as much if they left an impact on anyone, let alone a generation
They went from digital to analog at the very end it came a full cycle.. apart from that, they do a lot of soundtrack or probably should say Thomas was more towards gearing other adventures..
300k!!!
R.I.P daft punk most of there songs on ram seem like a goodbye now
One doesn’t experience self-transcendence, the illusion of self only dissipates✌️
I wouldn't mind if Daft Punk became music producers for other artists
they are producers now
Congrats on Nebula. The copywrite system on youtube should be ILLEGAL. Oh the irony
I peep that Adobe Audition, fam a lam

Industry giants, but you don't mention Nile Rodgers? I should think he is the biggest name out there.
Ah Pitchfork..
Sad 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
ferrari in thumbnail
(Sad Daft Punk sounds) :(
Music in the intro is a bit too loud. I can't follow the speaking. Video is good though.
you're deaf
I think everything they did besides homework, discovery and alive 2007 set is petty damn overhyped. They even admitted they spent only 2 months working Human After All.. Still sucks that it is official we will never get a Swan album ins Discovery 2 album that they could go out on...
Guy manuel is pronounced GIE manuel mate not the english 'Guy'!
So like jee? Or jiie?
Daft Punk are the reason critics shouldn't be critics.
If they didn't feel it, they have no purpose being in that space.
Daft punk made me start taking music seriously
Rule of thumb: if critics hate you, you're doing something right, keep it rollin'.
R.A.M. is way overrated
this video got the biggest Like/Dislike Ratio i've ever seen
They were giants before Kenya and who every else you mentioned. Critics? What are you ever talking about.
bro you cant pull off the face hair
use a stand my man
Pitchfork has to be some of the worst critics ever
all critics are pretentious assholes
They should have given us one more album to go out on. But no. They stayed silent for 8 years while the fans expected that they were going to release new music soon
Discovery & Human After All where iconic. But after that they get kinda lame. Thron Soundtrack was okay. RAM was boring af.
Your videos are already long. I get your point in first 3-4 minutes of the vid. Why would I want to watch full version ?
Love your content, but it is what it is.

Hey, don't place the blame for Skrillex on Daft Punk.
Kanye west is a pinnacle of normie culture.
Daft Punk was over-rated noise.
I thought Merzbow is overrated noise.
