All wall outlets have Neutral wires. They have to have them to work properly. Not all wall outlets have Ground wires; especially in older homes. I think you are thinking of wall light switches. In this case, in older homes, the Electrician would only run one set of wires down to the wall switch since dumb switches don't require a Neutral wire and it was cheaper and easier to do it this way. However, the new Electrical Code (at least here in the US) requires all new construction to have a Neutral Wire run to light switches. This means that there are two sets of wires running into the switch box and the two White neutral wires are connected together and are not connected to the dumb light switch. The two black wires are then connected to the two screws on the light switch (Hot and Load). Finally, all three ground wires are connected together.
Just waiting on one of those for the AU market! So far all of my Eve products work 100% of the time. They are the most reliable smart home devices I’ve ever had
This is a fantastic addition to their matter over thread lineup! I'm a little disappointed to see that energy monitoring is not for each individual receptacle, but it's a really solid device.
Been waiting for this product for a couple years. (Slow adopter waiting for the right products. First to it gets my money 💸 Take it Eve!) Now waiting to see how Nano Leaf’s light switches look when they finally come out. Outlets and switches all thread… solid.
8:51 Hi Brad, just letting you know that I think you’re confusing the neutral wire for light switches with the neutral for outlets. Normal outlets are always hot in 99% of instances (only exception is when one of the outlets is wired to a light switch for lamp control) unlike light switches that interrupt an existing circuit, so every outlet will need to have a neutral wire connected to it in order for it to function. The only real instance where this outlet would not work is in newer homes where kitchens and bathrooms are sometimes wired for 20A. Since this outlet is only rated for up to 15A, if you plug in an appliance that can exceed 15A of current, the outlet will blow before the circuit is tripped, turning your $70 investment into ewaste.
Great video, as always, Brad. Man I wish this came out a year ago! I have about 30 Eve Energy SmartPlugs and 4 of the Eve Energy Smart Strips (and yes, I completely agree on the need to have those updated to Thread - I might even swap mine out when they do), including about 8 sitting in boxes waiting for a need to arise (about 1x per week I find a new need). Thus, I may not ever need these wall sockets. My two favorite uses for my SmartPlugs are (1) power cycling my Apple Hubs (17 HomePods and 4 ATVs) in a way that keeps the same ATV as my constantly used hub and (2) using them on TVs, receivers, and my one remaining cable box and these devices are horrible at using energy even when off. I have a Flic button next to each entertainment area that turns all of those devices on and off. Of course, both of these can be completed with the Eve Sockets.
I use a lot of smart plugs in my apple home and none of them require a neutral wire. In fact I’d venture to guess that the majority of homes in the US do not have neutral wires in their systems. Never the less I do have some eve products and find them to be pretty reliable. Using the eve app I can set the battery chargers in my garage to come on two or three times a week and charge my garden tool batteries for 5 hours at a time, so the eve app is great for that kind of automation that HomeKit doesn’t offer. For me, any product that requires a neutral wire or a hub is a product I will not buy. I have ten HomePod minis so that requirement is fine but no hubs (or neutral wires ever!) to quote Joan Crawford.
I struggled doing an all WiFi smart home, and I am glad I did not. Yes, I have WiFi devices, but also many are Z-wave. They could have been Zigbee. It comes in handy since I need to reboot my router once a week. I put it on a z-wave plug and when we are all asleep 5a Sunday morning the router is turned off by the z-wave device, then two minutes later back on. The system is refreshed and life is good.
I can’t wait to get a few of these. Sidenote, My 22 Leviton GEN two smart switches and dimmers are working perfectly now on matter, it must’ve been something with iOS 17.3.
7:07 "Green and red for the holidays?" Okay, which one? You mean Christmas? Or do Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Easter all share the same theme colors?
I have 2 homes. Both are Apple Homekit homes. I have 2 HomePod Minis in each home. I have the HomePod Minis plugged into smart plugs in one home, and a smart power strip in the other. This allows me to restart the HomePod Minis if something goes wrong with them. I also have an Orange Pi in each home running Scrypted to support my Ring Video Doorbells. The Orange Pis are also connected to smart plugs so that they can be rebooted if they freeze up or become unresponsive to SSH.
I’m looking forward to this device to replace some existing Eve smart plugs I have to create a more discrete installation. My use cases are non-networked air purifier, Christmas tree lights, other lighting. I’m going to look in to this for my cottage water heater also.
Hmmmm, I may finally convert some more outlets. I have one of the older iDevice wall outlets, the only other device I have seen like this that has worked in HomeKit for years, but this new EVE one is $40 cheaper than the iDevice outlet! That cost difference is significant and the reason why I only had one of the older iDevice outlets. It is odd that power monitoring is not per outlet. As for needing a neutral wire. All outlets require a neutral, so that will not prove to be an issue.
Great video Brad. I was waiting for someone to review this product. Do you use plugs with regular bulbs or do you use smart bulbs? I would likely use this outlet with dumb bulbs
I purchased a Leviton smart outlet a while back that I wanted to put in my bathroom for my toothbrush charger only to find out that because the bathroom outlets are GFI, the smart outlet wouldn't work. So it would be awesome to see a GFI rated smart outlet. I totally agree on adding USB and USB-C ports, but I would actually prefer to have USB and USB-C ports on smart plugs. so many electronics these days come with USB style cables that you need your own brick for so it sucks having to put in a smart plug and then a charging brick on top of that
$50 for a 15A receptacle...uh, NO! Maybe if it had been 20A and a few bucks less expensive. No separate outlet monitoring either? Ugly green lights too... I would be ashamed if I was trying to push this on viewers.

I want to know more about your fireplace that you can use the button to turn on & off

Yes, I agree. Hopefully individual power monitoring is coming soon.
@@TheBradLloyddoes this outlet have a timer option so you can have it come on and then turn off after an amount of time you get to set it to?

Great question! It can be whatever you want. You could use virtual switches for any holiday or custom colours you like.
Good video Brad. I too want to know more about the flic button and setup for the fireplace. I’m hoping it’s a gas fireplace w/ led’s

Can the LED be disabled in software. These in the bedroom my be annoying with the bright green LED showing all night.
Yes, the LED can be turned off in the Eve app.
Been eyeing this one for awhile hope I can find a deal on Prime day soon

Been watching you since the beginning...love your content and vids. Keep it coming!
This is the best thing for servers!❤

I want to get these for my house. Hope Canada gets them at the same time. When do they come out?
I’m told they should be available in Canada soon, but I don’t have a date.
I’m surprised they don’t have usc plugs on this receptacle
Oh great! It isn’t in Canada on Amazon. Damn

You shouldn’t run a space heater in a room when you are not in that room.
