    VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
Today we're going to be making a very simple SPF hand cream using our Ivory Shea Butter, some Coconut Oil, Essential Oils and our Zinc Oxide.
What's great about this recipe is that there is no melting required, just whipping.
This recipe is very simple, we're gonna go by volume and not by weight.
So you need 1 cup of Shea Butter, 1/2 a cup of coconut oil, and we're going to be putting them in a bowl and soften them up together. So I'm going to mash together Shea Butter and Coconut Oil until they're ready to whip.
After whipping for 2 to 3 minutes until it's soft and fluffy, you want to add essential oils. Start with 10 drops and then go from there, you can add more if you like
So sometimes depending on the weather outside of the temperature, you see tiny little grains in your whipped body butter and they are from the Shea Butter. There is nothing to worry, about they're completely fine. It's just the weather makes the butter get a little bit grainy. It will not affect at all how good it is for your skin
To add SPF to this lotion, you simply add 1 tbsp of zinc oxide. So make sure that when you put in this zinc oxide you incorporate it with a spatula, and you do not use your electric mixer right away or the powder of the zinc will puff up.
Now that we have incorporated the zinc oxide really well and you can put it in your jars of choice.
This SPF hand cream is ideal if you do a lot of gardening or if you drive, if your hands are exposed to the sun a lot. Because it is a lot easier to prevent sun spots than to treat them.
So all you need is a little bit and it spreads very easily and my hand will be soft and protected from the sun.
Be responsible when exposing yourself to the sun for long periods of time, this video is not intended to cure, prevent or diagnose any condition.

I am not using this for sun protection (and for good reason), but rather as healing body cream.
I doubled the Shea and Zinc to make it a bit thicker and it worked out well. I used uncoated and non-nano zinc oxide with a mesh size of 325 nm (44 microns) and sprinkled it in very slowly, while mixing with a spoon, then switch to a spatula to cream the zinc particles into the butter, like you do when making cookies, and finally whipped it again and let it set harden in the fridge. (I also tempered my grainy Shea butter a day prior).

Take a look at the ingredients you’re using, and since we are not adding waters or gels, you can take the product that has the soonest expiration date, and that will be the end product’s expiration:)

You can use this on face and body as well! The SPF wasn't tested, but we believe it's about 20 SPF - the important thing is to re-apply your sunscreen regularly and be aware not to expose your skin to the sun for too long regardless of SPF.

Thank you for sharing this!! As a substitute for the coconut oil, would jojoba or raspberry oil be a good alternative?? I have the adverse effect from the coconut oil, elevates my cholesterol. Thank you 😊

    • @BetterSheaButter
      @BetterSheaButter  Před 5 měsíci

Hello Rosalinda, you're very welcome! That's a great question -- It may change the texture somewhat because coconut oil is a solid oil and jojoba or raspberry oils are liquid. We haven't tested those specifically but we've definitely heard customers say that they have substituted oils in this formulation without an issue. If it becomes too runny it may help to add a little more shea butter.

So instead of using solids of the butters, can use liquids and instead of having it a cream, it turns into being a oil that I can apply to my body, coconut oil, Shea, butter, oil, and the zinc because I want to make a protective oil, not a cream.

Hi Mary, we are not able to determine the SPF of this recipe without lab testing, but customers have mentioned that they have found ratios of zinc that can be added to achieve more protective value. We have also heard of folks using ingredients such as raspberry seed and carrot seed oils that contain some natural sun protection.

20% zinc oxide for the volume of whatever you're putting it in gives you around 20 SPF, putting in more would just make it higher. so if you have 100g of lotion, you'd put in 20g of zinc oxide, which would give you 20 SPF lotion
