The future was unknown to these Sailors and that the attack on Pearl Harbor was a year away. Some of those sailors were probably there on that day of infamy. Makes you wonder.

Poignant. BB-38 Pennsylvania took a beating at Pearl Harbor but was in dry dock which saved her; she returned the favor for the rest of the war and then served as a target ship in nuclear Operation Crossroads, 1948. RIP Old Falling Apart.

Our arrival at boot camp in 1972 was nothing like it's shown here. Middle of the night, no talking, 2 or 3 CPO's yelling about getting in step etc. We were met at the airport by a Navy bus, a single PO 1, wearing leggings and a duty belt on it. When we crossed the line onto the base, our world changed quick like. They say the Marines have the corner on yelling and such...well, the Navy wasn't far behind...at least not back then.

The USN wast the most prepared branch for WWII. US Army forces numbered around 130,000 ill equipped men when Marshall became chief of staff September 1st 1939. By war ends the number had risen to close to 9 million men.
