VS♀️ How to UNRESTRICT your Vulcan 650 (TEST RIDE COMPARISON)

  • So there are a few different theories out there about the existence of a 'restrictor plug' for the Vulcan 650. After a bit of research, I believe I can finally shed some light on this debate and help answer the questions we are all thinking... "Can I unrestrict my Vulcan 650!?' and 'How the hell do I do it?!'
In this video I explain how you can check to see if your Vulcan is unrestricted and show you how to unrestrict it. I then go out for a ride and describe the difference it makes.
    Some extra things to consider...
    - My Vulcan is a 2016 model - later models may be restricted differently
    - You may need to change your motorbike insurance to reflect that it is no longer LAMs approved

Great video. Thanks so much! Will be de-restricting mine as soon as I’m on my full licence next year.
By the way I have installed a booster plug to try to reduce the ‘jerkiness’ of the throttle. Pretty much a waste of money. Very minimal difference. I hope this is improved with de-restricting the bike. You seem to have got some good improvement so that’s something to look forward to.

Derestricting this bike does not exceed the LAMS power to weight ratio. Restricted it is 111kw/T, unrestricted it is 142kw/T. The way they get you is by adding the statement about not being allowed to perform modifications that increase the ratio.

No restrictions here, but I noticed riding it home from the dealership and doing a test ride after swapping out the ergo fit footpegs, that the throttle is very jerky on/off throttle and on/off clutch. @@TheVSChickYour videos are very good, good recorded, good quality, they are sincere and informative. Here in Brasil there is the same law everywhere. Brasil is a Federation of states (Republica Federativa do Brasil) only formally. In practice, it is a centralist empire of law (in the past it was much more federative like the USA are). I had all types of motorcycles in the past. But today I only have a KTM390 to urban use. This is a small bike with a supermotard position to pilot it, low seat (this is the last model made 2017 before discontinuation, the last old short KTM with lateral stubby exhaust with special Brazilian government imposed dbkiller inside the original stubby and low seat), it has a very interesting frame and handlebar and also a short gasoline reservoir (made of plastic like BMW) to strongly control the front wheel. Very light motorcycle and agile. Beautiful too. Good acceleration and easy to manoeuvre, nimble, without need to maintain the motor on (when parking). Not good to travel to faraway.
Good new year!! I have experience with your two cylinder motor in full throttle (Versys old model, Z650 new model). Maybe or not I buy a kawa cruiser (I had only one cruiser in the past, Honda shadow 750 with carburetor. Good bike).

Hey stace; mine seems to be the case also in terms of it just being a empty plug to cover it. But like you I’m in OZ (plus this is for the Versys model but it’s the same thing). Therefore does that mean I should suspect that the actual restriction may in fact be within the ECU mapping itself now?

Yeah possibly. My bike is a 2016 so things may have changed in the newer models so that may play a part depending on what year your bike is. I don't know much about the versys though sorry. Does it have the bolt restriction too?

Yeah in QLD, Australia we have two levels of license. Those who are on their RE licence have to ride LAMS approved (Learner Approved Motorcylces) motorbikes which are bikes generally under 650. Although the vulcan is a 650, the power to weight ratio exceeds that of the LAMS requirements. So in Australia it is restricted to allow it to fit into the LAMS category.

I'm not sure if it's the same on the mainland, but in Tasmania the police and Serve Tas have a list of what is considered a LAMS approved bike so if it's on the list then you are fine. It also shows up in your registration details as well.
