CZcams has turned some into 'know it alls' who insist on critiquing and giving their two pence. Haters are always going to hate, just have a good chuckle and ignore such comments ;) Re wrist on the wheel: merely ensures you're far enough if airbags deploy. Pretty smart measuring trick, yet many still sit too close. Cars have come a long way since my dads first 56 MGA around Brum. I followed suit in a sense, I'm on my 3rd MX5 (1st/2nd gen my favs). The old school simplicity is addictive, not a big fan of computerization/tech on cars these days. Cheers from niagara falls, canada, I enjoy the videos they make me miss living in England at times. I love your videos, they are about the car not as a driver! You shouldn’t need to justify yourself to anyone. The most important thing is comfort and safety. And from what I’ve seen your driving is perfectly respectable and safe towards yourself and other road users. One of my trades is a piano teacher and you’d never believe how many different ‘posture’ and arm / hand positions I work with. No body shape is the same so I tailor a ‘rough guide’ posture to each individual rather than a ‘one size fits all’ it’s none of anyone else’s business to judge your driving position!!! Ridiculous.
Keep enjoying making the videos and your cars all seem lovely. I’m after a Range Rover 2011 tdv8 for the new year and will keep an eye on your site etc
    Best wishes !

I always try to sit so that my arms are just slightly bent when I'm holding the steering wheel because I find If I'm further back than that it puts a bit of a strain on my shoulders. But they say you should sit as far back from the driver's airbag as possible because you don't want to be within a foot of an airbag when it goes off because it's going to do you some damage. I also find that sitting a bit further back is a lot more comfortable on a long journey because it enables you to stretch your legs a bit more whereas if you are closer to the pedals and steering wheel after an hour you start to ache because you are too cramped up. The important thing is that you are able to operate all the important controls on the vehicle comfortably and without overstretching. I passed my test at 17 in a mini metro and in those days there was no steering wheel adjustment or seat height adjustment or anything like that. you know why I think there is too much adjustment in modern cars because when you know you can put everything up or down a fraction you are forever fiddling with it. In the old days you just got in and got on with it and didn't think about it anymore.

I gave a neighbour, who is one of those so-called “Advanced Motorists” a lift a few months ago. He started lecturing me about resting my elbow on the door and for crossing my hands while steering. my first car was a 2001 Opel Astra in base spec with a seat that would move backwards and forwards and no adjustment on the steering wheel. It also had no power steering. I’m quite tall with longer legs, so i’d adjust the seat and would find my arms would be fully outstretched. Everyone would say I sit too far away but i would be comfortable with how I would drive. Now cars have a lot more adjustment but everyone drives how they feel comfortable.

Why did they change the 'rules' on seatingposition is very simple, there are systems in the newer cars that only work properly with the correct position. Also you're sitting in a car with a safety-area in which you are safe in certain accidents, but hardly all of them and hardly 100%safe. It's not a racecar !
The old cars were just dangerous in an accident, the doors were mostly flimsy , in a decent accident, you didn't have a real safety-cage and the roof and pillars would even wrinkle up when hit in the front or back.
The windows were made from glass that would cut you open without a doubt...
Comparing the old way and the new way isn't a great comparison.
On the other hand, every 'perfect position' is different for everyone else, you can't just make up rules for it. The best position is the position in which bests fits you and which allows you to move freely and see everything you need to see to drive safe.
A closer position comes from racing-cars and is just a dumb thing to do in any road car.
The full lock on a racing-car is very tiny and won't get your elbows stuck in your sides, doing this in a roadcar, will bring you in trouble as soon as you lose control.
Also a 'racingcar' has a lot smaller 'safety-area' within the rollcage, that's also the reason why the seat is a part of that safety-control and needs to be as firm as they are and made fit for the driver with helmet.
That's a pretty stupid remark people make to be honest.
It's like you say aswell, if going to sit closer, you won't see the cars behind you..in a racingcar you actually hardly need that, you won't be looking back as much as in a road-car.
A racingtrack isn't the normal road, you just need a fraction of that information.
People should stop making dumb remarks and look at their own driving. Sitting in a roadcar like a boyracer or a wannabe trackdriver is just idiotic!
Well made video, great view on the subject and a big thumbs up !

Dunning and Kruger figured it out a long time ago. The dumber someone is, the less aware of their stupidity they are. That's why there's so many "experts" everywhere nowadays, they were simply never told how stupid they were (because stating that fact is considered rude nowadays) and nobody ever told them not to talk about things they know nothing about, and they were never punished by doing that either. In fact, people are being told the opposite nowadays...everyone's opinion is equally worthy, everyone can discuss anything, everyone can achieve anything they want, etc. The so called "car guys" on youtube seem to be one of the dumbest and most ignorant groups of people online. If you read comments under any car related video online, especially on more popular channels, you'll see nothing but a bunch of fanboys and haters arguing about things none of them know anything about.
