DnD and TTRPGs exists outside of 5e. Long before, long after, and alongside it. I mean, if this guy's whole video library hasn't made it clear yet, he doesn't even *like* 5e.
For REAL! His editing style and commentary are so fresh, and yet I think his advice is on par or better than people like MCDM. Quick, precise, witty, and informative.

I understand the style, editing, presentation, tone, humor and all that stuff is super important. But I personally like your stuff because you come off as honest and genuine + what you're saying is interesting. It's genuine.

For the next AMA...
What do I say to players who want to cut off someone's head? I want my players to feel empowered to do stuff, but I don't know what to do when they come up with something theatrical.
As a fellow DM, I really on the rules interpretation of HP as not only meat points, but also luck, stamina, and well-being.
In combat, I may describe as a hit starts to get closer to the neck, draws a light bit of blood, or you watch as they deflect at the last second, wincing under the strain. (Definitely recommend books for giving you ideas for verbalizing combat). When at 0 HP, then yeah, you've succeeded.
Out of combat, whatever makes sense or is reasonable for a story. Skills are a DM tool, not player buttons to push when they want something.

I really enjoy your videos. I really like some of the strategies you use including using green paper and post-it notes for special effects, and how you end your videos with a link to another video going over a different aspect of DnD you covered before. Most CZcamsrs would just put a link to their last video or their most recent video, but I found myself 4 videos deep continuing your series. Amazing work!
Your video on how DMs are not story tellers has helped me, the little baby who can barely read, let alone write, get over so much stress I had leading up to a session wrapping up a major section of the campaign I was running. I just told my players that I was feeling overwhelmed and I had some stuff ready but I was pretty much going to wing the rest. It went pretty flawlessly after I shed the weight of expectations and we had a wonderful time. ❤

God, you are a breath of fresh air for the DnD CZcams scene. Unfortunately, I missed the window to ask a question, but let me ask it anyways.
As a DM, how do you deal with min/maxers at the table? I don't have a problem with them personally, but sometimes I feel like they can overshadow other players and I feel bad sometimes when I am running the game.
I would be very, very happy to see a video of your opinion on roll under vs difficulty class mechanics. I have always been very entrenched in the DC camp, but the more I study old school and indie games the more I realize I have a lot to learn about game design philosophy

Second Edition/AD&D had rules for running battles that were pretty good. They’re in the 2E Player’s Guide and in the Fighter’s Handbook as well…

Dude I'd pay actual money to get a full rundown on your personal TTRPG system. I play in an ODND game right now and I love the system but it could definitely use some remodeling and additional mechanics, and your blend sounds PERFECT.

Not exactly what our beloved DM does, but I can recommend maps that come with descriptions. Like, from Elven Tower, Burrough Bound (sp.?) etc. One map is usually enough for one session.
Ars Magica magic system is so good, I wish to run/play one day.

I have to say this channel is horrible for short and to the point advice, guides, and explanations for aspiring dm who's never played. But what you do is FAR better, I have now binged every one of your videos. You explain things while keeping it entertaining and not boring, and you give great advice that I've never heard before, not copy and paste stuff like alot of people. I heard something in the video that was music to my ears. Please, you must elaborate on using the Ars Magica magic system in your game. It's something that I have given much thought to and want to implement as well.
Here's a tip from myself to other DMs. Record your session audio with your players' approval, of course. Just use your phone to record and put it on a thick mouse pad on the game table. The mousepad will absorb some table noise, such as rolling dice. Even if you don't plan to use it for anything. It's so helpful to be able to listen back later. You catch side conversations in character you missed because they weren't involving the GM, you won't forget details because it'll remind you listening back, you don't need to take notes during the session so you can focus better, and it's a lovely experience to be able to relive good times with friends.
I think other than the armed approach, the sticky notes are becomming your distinct trademark. So yeah, more sticky notes :P

i know you said you prefer building from a basic ruleset rather than strip down a complex one, but I'm surprised nobody's made a stripped down version of Pathfinder 2e's combat mechanic, in the way people have made stripped down DnD 5e-based systems... yet.
What books hold the best encounter tables?
