  • When I first heard Dave Ramsey, I thought he was a little radical - and sort of crass - but Dave definitely grew on me. Let’s talk about the lessons which Dave taught us, because without Dave Ramesy, we may not have stayed debt-free.

Amy’s books made me unashamed to be frugal. I credit her with learning to not worry about what other people think of my frugality. I had all her books and would reread them. Then I loaned them to a friend and never got them back. I’d probably still read them today though a lot of it is outdated. But the principals are the same. As a civil servant my income was somewhat limited so I frugaled my way to financial success.

I discovered Dave Ramsey back during the lockdown in 2020. I was unemployed.
I'm European and it was a big surprise for me to discover people needed his "baby steps" when those are just pure common sense.
My grandparents, who survived a war, told me always how to live on less, be frugal, pay cash for everything (including the house), and enjoy simple things in live.
But of course, I didn't realise how deep consumerism is ingrained in North America and how unhappy people are in general.
I really appreciate the job The Ramsey team is doing for you guys.

It's important to live below your means and be debt-free... have a financial cushion. But I learned that from my parents. My parents did the envelope system well before Ramsey! Every month they sat at the table, went thru bills and their written budget... and taught the kids as well. There are times when I find Ramsey out of touch with the real world for the "real people". I'd like to see him go to the grocery store, look at prices and decide what to buy and what not to buy. :-)

I still find him mean, rude and crass to this day but some people aka me in 2016 need that "You made this mess. Now what are you going to do about it" message. Debt free due to the Baby Steps. Current savings going to new teeth then Saving for land. One large goal at a time!

My husband and I were given this book as a wedding gift when we got married 11 years ago. We followed the steps and now we are a 1 income family with 7 children one of which is extremely special needs. I quit my job as a nurse to care for him when he was born almost 9 years ago. Our house is paid off, we have substantial savings. I obviously don't want my husband to lose his job but if he did we would be okay. It feels amazing to own everything and know no one can take your things away from you. If something did happen we'd cut down to the 4 walls again and live on savings until income was restored.

We’re on baby step 2, small balance on last credit card, then ready to start building up our emergency fund.
We have 4 rentals( 2 pd for, 1 small mortgage on 2 combined) .We will sell 3 of the rentals and keep one for income in retirement.that will help us fund the emergency fund quickly ( husband is 74 , I’m 67)to be able to start working on our home mortgage in order to finally be 100% debt free!!!
Thanks to the gift of my share of inheritance from the death of my beloved daddy in March, we will finally be in position to finally retire . 8:30

Dave Ramsey's plan is instructive for many people, especially the first 3 baby steps. But it falls apart after that because it's designed for the traditional household - married people with dual income potential, children and home owners. That said, the general principles you outlined work for everyone.

I listen to you guys just because I like money talks and the occasional personal thought or photo. I have listened to a lot of Ramsey derivatives also. My one big issue with his advice is the no credit card philosophy. We have and have had credit cards for 51 or of our 53 years of marriage. We only had a debt with interest 1 time on the credit card when we moved to this house 38 years ago. Paid off very quickly. Now we use credit cards in lieu of debit card as they are safer and not connected to our bank balance. We get money back or points on transactions. I transfer money from bank to pay during month so there is never a balance with interest. Saving, wise spending and financial security are a mind set. I think you guys have that.

Hi Hope and Larry! I read “Making The Most of Your Money” by Jane Bryant Quinn when it first came out and I credit her book with my getting on the right financial track. This was before Dave Ramsey became a thing. I also occasionally watch “ The Money Guy “ CZcams channel; they have a Financial Order Of Operations which has more steps than Dave and they aren’t bombastic, which makes them more palatable for my purposes. Regardless, the keys to my success were definitely living below my means, setting financial goals, and being debt free for the most part ( I had a mortgage and for a short time, a car loan).

One of my relatives hates Dave Ramsey too!
Her financial plan consists of the following three steps:
Apply for a new credit card.
Run it up over the limit, mostly on things she doesn't need.
Default on the credit card - and dishonestly and immorally pass the loss off to those of the rest of us who actually sacrifice, plan, and exercise some self-control in order to pay off our debts, maintain a savings account, and stay current on our bills.

One of the first lessons we taught our sons was to learn to "eat the meat and spit out the bones". Just because you don't like his personality, doesn't mean that Dave Ramsey doesn't teach some lessons that are worth learning. I would encourage you to watch the video. I admit in the beginning that I found Dave a little hard to swallow, but that we gained specific (and important) insight from him.
