NASA just released the first pictures from the James Webb Space Telescope, the most powerful telescope ever built. They’re incredible. They show the deepest we’ve ever seen into space, stars being born, galaxies colliding. But the least beautiful one is my favorite. It’s the spectrum of exoplanet WASP 96-b. In simpler terms, it’s a picture of the atmosphere of a planet over 1,000 light years away. Most simply put… it’s our new way to find aliens.

Welcome to the joke down low:
What is Saturn’s favorite movie?
Lord of the Rings.
Find a way to use the word “favorite” in a comment to let me know you’re a real one ;)
Imagine aliens on the other side of the universe, today or a thousand years from now, witnessing the birth of our star with their telescopes.
That's an insane thought.
The sun is about 4.5 billion years old. Information travels at the speed of light. They would have to be pretty far away to see the birth of the sun. Like further away than the andromeda galaxy. Dont know if there isnt actually a law that prohibits this kind of resolution or if they'd just need a super big ass telescope.
It'll probably be near impossible using traditional or even future Kardachev scale 1 telescopes to witness the birth of our solar system from 5 billion Ly away. A supernova or hypernova at that distance is definitely possible but resolving one star outta billions in a galaxy far far away? I don't think so.
Are you talking about life forms other than carbon-based?
Love it! But don’t forget about the possibilities of aliens that aren’t based on water! That’s even more crazy and exciting 😆😆
Not impossible, can't technically rule them out but most physics/chemistry research shows it's unlikely. However water is important, but the real bio markers will be atmospheric O2, Co2 and tempature.
Yes, absolutely! Research here on earth pivots around the environmental conditions we are used to (1bar, 298K..) and under these it’s true that carbon is most likely to build complex molecules. But there is a vast amount of planets (or even stars!) hosting completely different starting conditions out there! It might be possible that other atoms could form molecules complex enough to sustain life as well (centered around phosphorus or sulfur, for example). I like the approach that Lee Cronin and Sara Walker take on extraterrestrial life: instead of looking for life forms/molecules we *know* can produce life, they rather look for molecule complexity itself. This idea is based on the principle that the universe seeks to maximize entropy and sustaining life (making copies of itself) requires energy and therefore goes against the "will" of the universe.
amonia aliens
Just what i was about to say! I think is really selfish to think that the kind of life that exists on earth is the only kind ofe life possible
Silicon and germanium are conceivable alternatives to carbon other plausible elements include palladium and titanium however carbon does seem more chemically versatile and is more abundant in the cosmos so searching for carbon based life makes the most sense
I started watching your Shorts when the algorithm made it's magic and then, seeing the effort you put into your Shorts, made me question if you actually post longer form videos. Turns out you do post them and NOW I am obssesed with your channel. I am a huge fan of both medicine and technology and you cover them both. As a medical student, I am in awe when I see how deep you went with the cancer video and as a tech enthusiast I cannot help but get goosebumps whenever you decide to talk about space or electric planes. You are growing to be my favourite channel for any topic, not just science. Thank you for your work, it's amazing.
Okay wow, these images are just beautiful!
It's crazy that the light from these galaxies took billions of years to reach us. We are literally looking back in time! 🔭🤩
Back then when we produced our "Game of Moons" doc, we were amazed every day how many unknown things are out there. There's still so much to explore and it's so cool, that tech & science take all of us with them on this rollercoaster ride through the universe.
p.s.: The Biosignatures animation at 2:52 is so cool!
Sometimes science sounds more like magic, this stuff is just mind boggling incredible 🤯
"Any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from science"
@@oskrm you mean, "Any sufficiently advanced science is indistinguishable from magic"
@@xynyde0 I meant it as a joke, but yeah
A better “magic” than all the magical beings most people give 10% of their salary to.
Advanced not analyzed but I imagine that’s what u meant :)
The water molecule in the atmosphere of the planet at 3:11 should have two Hydrogen atoms and only one Oxygen atom. Also, the Nitrogen atoms should be connected with a triple bond instead of a single bond.
I mean it could be a radical but yeah, it really should
That ended too soon.
Once again, sponsor segment was perfection.
Awesome video as always, and the excitement, it's infectious. Keep them coming, Cleo.
There's this glare you have in your eye that only comes from speaking out of pure emotion and passion! I can see how much excitement you were holding back at this discovery and that just gain you a sub!
that's cleo for you haha
Its incredible how a single billion dollar project can have such a huge impact on how we view this universe .
About 10 billion but in astronomy terms an order of magnitude is close enough ;)
Just discovered your channel. Mind-blowing.
I arrived on your F1 explained video. Then checked the fracking video. And now this as the latest.
On every of these videos i was already very well informed. Yet it was mind-blowing, to me, to see such high quality content.
What impressed me the most was journalism ethic, easy to understand explanation, high quality research.
It's a matter of "level". Each of these things are incredibly hard to get in journalism. It makes sense, right, one cannot be an expert in everything, yet journals are expected to report on everything.
And one (one person, one team, one company) CANNOT be good at everthing, obviously. Thus when i see high level content on ONE of these three condition (ethic, understandable, documented), i'm calling it a great work.
Well you (you & your team) reach that high level on these three at once.
Being from Europe (France), i tend to assume that in some fields, anything american cannot be better than european (i know, that is dumb, yet americans do that too :p). Journalism would be one of them. Well, great way to prove me wrong. The only equivalent for your work would be our ARTE channel (french & german channel). You probably do not know them, so let me tell you, that is high, very high praise.
Many thanks to you and your team.
To put things in perspective, the light bulb was invented only 143 years ago. Now we have the James Webb telescope. Human as a species has come far.
Imagine if the powerful countries of the world allocated all of their time and funds into developing a warp drive instead of investing in war (or other wasteful endeavors). Where would we be today?
Imagine if Carl Sagan were alive to see this... Ann Druyan must be teary eyed around now... Been following the JWST since it launched. Amazing to see it up and running so well so early - long may it live!
Shout-out to all the scientists and astronauts out there, working and giving us these revelations... You are our galactic heroes! ❤️
The video I wanted to see, a general news and tech communicator who actually GOT IT! The most important image released, and yes this is the one that maters! THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU. (Now if we can only get Large Ultraviolet Optical Infrared Surveyor built and launched in a timely manner, your dream may become a reality sooner.)
Honestly watching you geek out about new topics always makes my day! I was hoping you'd make a video about this, thank you so much
0:27 ahhh your thumb is like mine!!! Finally there is another!! Love your content please keep it coming!
The sudden Carl Sagan at the end really drove home "This isn't science fiction, this is real." 👍
Loved the 5 mins video! I wish there was more summarized content like this one on CZcams!
Keep it up Cleo :)
This is my favorite channel on CZcams right now and the James Webb Telescope is just mind blowing.
I've been a fan of yours since Vox and now it's great to see that you and Johnny have made the decision to focus on independent journalism. Thanks for both great content!
Your sky map is just so cool. Thanks for sharing the of source in the description box !
It took that light 1150 years to reach us from Wasp-96b but it only took us 1 year to use nuclear bomb on a city once it was invented and its still being used as a way to show power and threaten our own existence. I wish humanity puts more efforts into space research than finding ways to self-destruct.
Love it! Good to have your quality content back on the notifications. Always a fresh, different, new and most of all a simple outlook on current affairs. Big ups to you! Love the channel 👌❤️
I'm kind of hoping we'll find signs of life on Europa when both ESA and NASA probes will pass by it later this decade. Finding life (assuming we can confirm it by actually landing there and taking samples) so close to Earth would go so much further in our understanding of life that has developed outside of our very specific cell and amino acid based life on Earth. Finding life 1150 lightyears away would be great, but finding life on one of the moons of Jupiter would be genuinely transformative, because we could relatively easily bring it back here and study it in detail.
Thank you. Thank you thank you. It's been a long couple of years and your message at the end of this video really put a smile back on my face. I also grew up watching a lot of Star Trek and for the first time in a minute feel some next generation level optimism about the future
We truly are alive during quite a scientific breakthrough. Fellow employees I work with were anxiously awaiting new pictures yesterday from the telescope and it did not disappoint. It’s only a matter of time before we find some sort of life form.
It's not just tiny specks of light being blocked. In fact it is just the tiny circle around the planet (which is its atmosphere) we're looking at. Just mind boggling.
This was the first video I've seen of yours and it was fantastic. Subscribed!
Great video! More people need to get excited about this. Space breakthroughs are by far my favourite!😉
We don't have to worry about finding aliens because they've already found us
Would love to see James Webb Telescope capture the Pillars of Creation, that collection of gas and dust is my favorite photo captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. By the way, another great work, Cleo!
Pretty sure it has now :)
The way these videos are being made i mean absolutely amazing
The editing,music ,script 🔥🔥🔥
And Cleo being exited about topics is so cool ❤️❤️
Good to see the editing and audio bugs fixed from the last video. Great work! Also, how cool is space?!
Congrats on the freshness of the topics and the obviously researched information. I really enjoy your videos..
Well done, Cleo - finding the REAL story in all of the mainstream media hype. THAT'S JOURNALISM.
I just love your energy and the way you explain everything. Keep doing it ❤❤
Love it ! Thanks for the sharing Cleo !
Love your videos, keep it up! Huge fan!
You and your videos never disappoint!!!!!
Loved it!!!
Keep doing this!!!🙌🙌🙌
amazing video as always, beautifully explained
Thanks for including Carl in your outro. He was the OG astrophysicist communicator.
Also, all the noise we're making, well it'll take another 50 years for it to start reaching those nearest planets that we know of.
Great reporting! I love your videos
It’s a great day because I learned something new from you today. Very interesting information. Great content, great video! Looking forward to your next one.
Love the enthusiasm of the kid in you. Cool video, Subscribed!!
I’ve been following you since your Quibi days Cleo, keep up the great work!
The slickest ad insert ever! I doff my hat. Love the content of HUGE!
Love your work Cleo!
Just discovered your channel. Love it , you are brilliant .
Love this! Thank you! 🙂
As an aspiring astrophysicist, this gets me excited as well
Thank you for making such wholesome, optimistic and enthusiastic videos about human endeavours - I love it! Also, you should consider reaching out to Lex Friedman to do a podcast, that would be such a lovely episode to listen to.
I'm pretty sure this video will be a huge acceleration for your channel. Great work! 🖤
your work is so uplifting, it just amazing thank you for doing what you do
Thank you for another amazing video, Cleo. All the best and love from Manila. ❤️
Super comprehensive explanation. Thanks!
Great video! Lovely Editing! Wish it was more than just 5 mins
This is rlly well explained and i like your enthusiasm. I feel it. Love, lil earthling
Do you have your own Podcast channel or are you planning to start? Coz, you articulate the subject very well even for amateurs. Excellent presentation neatly said.
JSWT is one thing I feel so excited about in recent times and feeling proud to be alive in this era to witness all of these.
this just made my day being part of this era part of this moment get to listen n learn about it 👀 thank U 🙌🖖
Your work inspires me to enjoy life and feel excited about it. Thank you!
I love your energy, the F1 video hooked me, and the James Webb video made me subscribe
the „it‘s not science fiction, it‘s real“ gave me goosebumps
Hey I love your resurch and presenting style ,and thanks it was informative ❤️👍
I like how those beams coming from the stars have become a trademark of the James Webb pictures.
If we do find life out there, you would make a great spokesperson. Thank you. I appreciate the longer videos!
Wow, so glad I found you! (From Fraser Cain and Dr. Becky) fabulous video, Cleo. Look forward to a whole lot more, that I see you are doing and have done. 🙏👍
Love love love love your channel!!!
The production in this video is amazing
Nice work
This is so fascinating. I need 30 min videos on each of those pics
We agree on our favorite JWST image, WASP-96. Of course it’s all fascinating but the possibility of analyzing exoplanet atmospheres for bio signatures is so exciting.
I love your vibe...not a dull moment and full of information
I like it when she says 4:27 only a couple hundred lightyears away 😁
😂
Pretty cool video! This video seems pretty out of this world! I was sent from Johnny Harris! (I’m subscribed to you now too! ) I totally support this type of journalism!
Brilliant video. It's breath-taking how James Webb captures light emitted from galaxies 13 billion years ago... you look up and you see into deep time. My favourite HUGE video yet? 🤔
I don't know if you are still going to see this or not but this is my first video from your channel and the moment it began I subscribed, the passion with which you talked about the topic is admirable. I think you are my favorite youtuber now
That map is so cool, is it possible to get one?
I only printed one with the HUGE* branding.... but I could upload it for anyone! And in the meantime, I got the underlying information from Jim's Cosmos Editable Sky Chart here :) www.jimscosmos.com/editableallskychart
@@CleoAbram That'd be awesome if that was okay?
Came fr her beauty ..stayed for the shared knowledge,..thanks cleo! I learned a lot from yu today
I just loved the Carl Sagan Remix at the end, because it perfectly captured your whole excitement. Keep up the good work :)
Great video. Long back saw your video about internet on Vox and loved it, and I didn't knew you had youtube channel until now. Thanks youtube.
The quality of your videos are exceptional.
This is an amazing news and an amazing content anyway but your pep makes them all more stunning. 💜
Thank you for the more than amazing videos 🙏🏼🙏🏼 much appreciated 😊
Aliens on a completely different planet probably think that we are aliens or are looking for us?!?
U explained it in the simplest way possible. ❤
Thx for this, I love that you like Star Trek. Lots of grim News every day, but I still hope that we can reach a better future. Thank you for doing your part to get us there
So, CZcams showed me this video because I have watched a lot of JWST content. While I was watching, I was thinking -- Who is this and why haven't I heard of this channel before? That's a rare thing for me, but great. Instant subscribe.
how did you get this out so fast😅 ur work ethic is INSANE
Great and very informative video!
Great Video love it! Maybe for the next topic why it would be bad if we actually found life outside of the earth
Hey cleo, Can you please make a video explaining in detail what james webb is and what are the possibilities we are looking at in regards to it. Would love to know more about it
Wow! You made that video so quickly!!! It was literally released one day ago!
Loved this so much
Heyy!! Been binging your videos, really good content & HUGE* style of editing
Wanted to ask if I could get that universe map somewhere, or if it's part of merch or something??
Wow. Mind-blown 🤯
You're Videos are the best from this earth. Maybe James Web finds another Cleo Abram on an exo planet? This would be cool!
Great video, thanks!
I love that you show the "Ad" marker and a countdown! I actually watched it because of that.
Nice editing!
Hi Cleo, where did you get the map you rolled out. Would love to get one. Thankyou. Great video. Infectious excitement.
I have a friend who works as a scientist at JPL as part of the team that is looking at extrasolar atmospheric data. I asked her a couple years ago what the chances were of finding unambiguous signs of extraterrestrial life in our lifetime (we were in our mid 40s) and she put the odds at about 50%. I'll definitely take those odds.
don't be mistaken, no equal sign can be drawn between signs of life (biosignatures) and actual life. There're a lot of abiotic processes that can create biosignatures such as water and oxygen we see in exoplanet's atmospheres.
@@DumplingWarrior But water and oxygen are more than enough for life to form . We have found life on earth dozens of kilometers below the earths surface at incredibly high temperature with close to no water and oxygen or even any nutrition. We have also found life at the bottom of the ocean where again , there's no sunlight , nutrition , heat and oxygen and the temperature is below 5 degree C , there are entire ecosystems in parts of earth which we expected to be completely void of life due to the lack of oxygen and water , so if water and oxygen both exits on a planet , then there's a 95% chance according to me that there's at least some form of life on that planet .
@@shukrantpatil equating evidence of water and oxygen to 95% change of finding life there is not how science is done. Yes a lot of life forms we know of need water and oxygen, but they're not necessary, as you said, we've seen a lot of those extremophiles on earth. But there're so many more factors affecting a planet's habitability, so many more. I highly suggest you read more on astriobiology
She had no way of assessing those odds. This is a common mistake people (even scientists) make: ascribing probabilities when there is no data available to use to derive a probability from.
@@JonS I realize that "the odds" is a bit of a misnomer in this case. It is more of an educated guess, and since she works directly in field (that is, she is a Ph.D. scientist working as part of a team that is looking for this sort of thing at a world class research facility), that her opinion/educated guess on this issue might be worth listening to.
